The Cole's police will be after you for posting this B4 5pm Monday .

    • What's that rule all about, anyway? To stop people posting 30 half price at Coles stuff individually?

      • +2

It was WW that kicked up a fuss about the time it was posted and apparently enforced legal action.

        • +9

Yeh can't take the advertising because it gives their duopoly partners time to position themselves. Should go after their own people leaking it if it's that big a problem to them, not ozbargain. Obviously too hard to look internally for them.

      • I feel the same way about LP record posts recently.. why not just put em all in one post and update it? Vinyl enthusiasts are not aware of their own enthusiasm.

  • What other deals will there be?

    • Half price Tim Tams.

      • +2

They were half price a week ago. So nothing special about it.

        • +2

Whoosh it was a joke because they're on special almost every 2nd week.

    • +4

Whatever was on special at Woolies this week and vice versa

    • Half price dishwashing tablets.

  • What happened to the other half of the year?

  • Yum!

  • Is this different from other brands? Usually buy Hong Kong brand

    • +13

I buy the aldi prawn dumplings 750g for $9. Tastes great.

      • +2

They are great. I also like the ones from the asian supermarkets. Hanaromart sells some korean-style dumplings under the Bibigo brand.

      • +1

        Thanks ill try them😁

        • +2

Warning, you'll keep buying them. 😂

      • +1

Do you remember what they're called?

        • Urban Eats Japanese Style ___ Gyoza (Prawn, Vegetable, Pork, etc), $9 all year

    • +2

They are just better, especially at half price.

  • +1

    Finally!

  • +1

Isn't it used to be 1kg?

    • +2

That's the ones at Woolies, that used to be KB, but re-branded while they still come from the same factory. Last I checked the regular price/kg was identical for both.

  • +1

Does everyone agree that those Gyoza (made in Thailand) are very nice, while the prawn dumplings that usually come on special at the same time (made in China) tend to taste like they used off prawns?

    • +2

The prawn ones are the only ones that are edible for me… other flavours taste artificial and bad

  • We had these the other night. Tastes good! Can notice the chunks of small shrimp. Other noticeable flavour/texture is the chives.

I've been looking at most packets from common western supermarkets in the last month or so. I've noticed a lot of the meat varieties from different brands are usually below 25 - 30%. This prawn gyoza in particular from KB's says 45% (what I assume to be vietnamese shrimp) seems to be one of the highest meat content dumplings/gyozas available. I just double checked and the pork and chucken varities from KB both have a measly 17% meat filling unfortunately.

I'll definitely try and stock up on a few of these prawn ones though! Thanks for the heads up OP!

      Hi,

      Ingredients: Filling (60%) [ (prawn 45%), ….]
      Maybe the actual prawn is 60% X 45% = 27% ??

      • The part you copy/pasted shows 45% prawn, the remaining 15% must be the other filling. As per the recipes of the other varities they offer, the dough is usually 40%.

  • How do these compare with the ones from costco?

  • Can someone teach me how best to cook these?

Last time i did the traditional steam they were really inferior to the Hong Kong Dim Sum dumplings that i steamed in the same pan. So i guess steaming is the wrong approach for these

    • +7

I usually put some in a small frypan with a little water and cook them in that on low with the lid on…..a bit like pot stickers you could add a little oil as well if you wanted.

      • Thank you, seems like frysteam is the way

    • +7

Cast iron pan, sear one side for about 4-5 mins. Mix 1tbsp corn flour with 1/4 cup water, chuck into pan. Cover and steam for about 7-8 mins. Eat.

      • Heat oil first in the cast iron pan, right?

thank you and nice! I love that corn flour step. That must give the crunchy bubbly malliard crust that some of the dumpling restaurants do.

        • +4

Yes correct, a bit of oil to sear the bottom of the dumplings so it's crispy. The corn flour is optional if you don't want that web of crispy bits but otherwise a bit of water to steam the dumplings after searing.

          • @YellowWiggle: Amazing thank you. Yeah i live for that crispy web of biscuity goodness

    • +1

Gyozas are better Pan fried imo. The Hargows are better steamed. I got those stainless steel pan and they are good. Some people prefer bamboo baskets for steaming.

      • Nice will pan fry them

    • +1

for sauce: i mix 3 x soy sauce, 1 x balsamic vinegar, a bit of chili oil, chopped green onions

      • +1

Nice. Chinkiang black vinegar is a good one too.

  • +1

And only now comparable to Aldi price at half price

    • +3

Well, better than Aldi price, and these taste better in a direct comparison.

  • -5

    Stinky socks!

  • What's a good dipping sauce for these?

    • +1

While home-mixed is probably best, I often go for the Lee Kum Kee dumpling sauce.

    • +1

If you already have stuff in your pantry, the stuff I grew up eating gyozas and dumplings with is red wine vinegar and chilli oil. Usually readily availble in most Asian pantries anyway..

      • Do you mean rice wine/chinese vinegar?

        • Nah, I use actual red wine vinegar. It's a muddy red colour.

AFAIK, (atleast most) rice wine is clear-ish no? And chinese vinegar is brown right? There might be variations on colours now but I can't remember as a child growing up in a half Asian household and having any other red-coloured vinegar. You might be able to correct me though.

Bought the hargow this time and wanted something different/less salty.

      3 Tbsp Kikkoman Sukiyaki sauce
4 drops Squid brand fish sauce
      1/2 tsp ginger

      I may be onto something!

      • Haha, wtf? Interesting to say the least.. 😅

P.S. I'm half south-east Asian and hate ginger. I had a rough time growing up.. 😂

      • +1

@Speckled Jim the hargow is very natural which I personally didnt like at first, but it becomes amazing with some LKK chicken powder (or anything similar) sprinkled on the top. Cant stop eating them

PS: This includes all varieties of KB's Gyoza/Dumplings:

    • KB Frozen Prawn Gyoza | 750g
    • KB Frozen Vegetable Gyoza | 750g
    • KB Frozen Prawn Hargow | 750g
    • KB Gyoza Chicken | 750g
    • KB Gyoza Pork | 750g

    • +1

      Ok, so:
      Prawn Gyoza - very nice
      Prawn Hargow - awful

Anyone tried the others and wants to give an opinion?

      • +2

The xiaolongbaos (soup dumpling) are actually quite good! Not as flavourful or juicy as most shanghai places but gets you like 60 - 75% of the way there!

        • -1

Most Coles don't sell xiaolongbaos. I never seen one that sell based on my visits to ~10 stores :(

          • @yanlianglee: You've never seen this? I think at my local Coles, it's the biggest section of the KB range. Usually twice as much space reserved in the freezer with this stocked than the other dumpling/gyoza varities they have. And I live atleast a 20+ minute drive from the closest town with a strong Chinese/S.E. Asian community (Springvale).. 😅

I was suprised they had soo much in stock too when I went this afternoon.. 😅 For nostalgia, we had it for dinner. Haven't had a single xiaolongbao in almost like 4 - 5 years (since my mum passed) but it seems the quality has gone down a little. Not as good as I remember these to be. Was planning to grab more than the 3 packs I got tonight if they were still good but my dad wasn't that satisfied either with these.

He enjoyed the prawn gyozas I made last week. (As I noted above, it's the dumping/gyoza from this company with the most meat content. 45% Viet shrimp and you can textually notice it! You even get that nice hit of chives in the filling/mixture from a good "jui cai jiao" I think it's called? I'll probably go tomorrow and grab a few more than the 2 of those that I got today.. 😅

            • +1

@WasBargain: @WasBargain oh wow that is wild! Which coles do u reckon have these in stock? My local says unavailable. Lol at the westernised name “pork soup dumplings.” Would have never picked the name to mean xiaolongbao. Great find… now i just gotta source them!

              • +1

@JOZL: I reckon your local still may have it..

I went down to mine again today. By early evening, all the prawns gyozas were sold out. Quite a few pork gyozas left, a few chicken and a few vegetarian. A few more prawn hargow and quite a lot of soup dumplings left in between their normal freezer placement and the specials freezer they also use for deals of the week.

I'm still unsure if the guy above my previous reply just didn't know what to look for but like I said in a previous comment, I'm a solid 20 minute drive from the closest Chinese community so I'd have thought most metro/outer metro stores should have it. Wether it's sold out or not I have no idea though. 😅 I also don't trust their online website for stock/availability.. 😋

    • Thanks. Photo shows prawn, so without this info the picture makes it seem like it's the only one.

  • The chicken ones are absolutely disgusting. Stay away. Threw the rest of the packet out after trying. Horrible weird taste

    • perhaps you have the coriander gene
