Reviews are mixed with regards to handle potentially separating.

I figure I am handy enough with my ozito tools and bunnings membership to rig something up should that occur.

I'm purchasing because the wife always gets to the machine before myself each morning and does not clean out the basket and portafilter.

  • Price so low it’s not even in the title!

  • +2

    Tell ‘em the price son!

  • I actually needed one of these. My OEM plastic one cracked about a month ago. Been waiting for one of these to go on sale. Hopefully won't have the same issue.

    • +2

Mine also cracked . It is actually a standard 10mm thread on the cast filter part . Bought a $5 wooden handle from Ali and looks and feels better than new .

      • +1

Wouldn’t happen to have a link would you? If it’s that easy, keen to just replace the handle as well.

      • +1

        Yes - a link would be great! 😃 👌

      • +2

        search this "m10 portafilter handle"

I actually got it from amazon . The listing I used is no longer , It was a couple of years ago .

  • +2

I’m in the market for one but those reviews are awful.

    • I figure before assembly, I'll look at the thread being used, head to bunnings and see if I can find a stainless bolt in that 15cm range e.g.
https://www.bunnings.com.au/zenith-m10-x-150mm-stainless-ste… and cut the head off.
Take existing threaded rod out of handle, drill hole a bit longer, and insert new longer rod. Epoxy in if required.

Queue thats what she said puns :)

      • I assumed the thread is part of the metal of the group head, just screwed into the handle. Did someone write 15mm?

        • Yes the thread is part of the group head which is already stainless steel , The handle has a really crap mild steel female thread that rusts , expands and splits the handle . It takes quite a bit of force to get the rusty handle off the grouphead , So much that I started to doubt that it was actually screwed on .
FYI the thread is an M10 which is pretty much the standard .

          • @troyww: Got my NEOUZA yesterday.

I ended up purchasing that Zenith M10 x 150mm (BSC10150) Stainless Steel Cup Head Bolt And Nut I/N:2310405 from Bunnings for $4.56 and used the onepass delivery that would have annoyed them :)

The M10 bolt screws perfectly in to the group head.

The bolt also looks to be the perfect length to drill the full length of the timber handle too.

I figure I will seal with some heat appropriate epoxy in combination with wrapping the end that inserts into the group head with that PTFE thread seal tape that bunnings sell for $1.

    "Grounds" for divorce there…..

    I'll see myself out.

    • +1

OP has bean thinking about this a lot, however he needs to learn to espresso how much leaving the portafilter unclean hurts him a latte

      • The puns are running a bit coarse…

        • there certainly is a latte garbage puns in this thread

  • I just decided to order one at this price. Unfortunately my Breville Dual Boiler is off for repair at the moment, it’s essentially brand new too it’s only 9 months old. The shower head hex screw snapped in half last week when I locked the portafilter in place.

    • +2

I don't understand how the hell that can happen.

      • Overfilled the basket perhaps?

        • I have always measured out a maximum of 18 grams since owning it, and have always used the razor trimmer to take off any excess. According to the repair man at the Breville repair site I took it to, it happens regularly, because the heat expands the screw so that it can no longer rotate… I tied to undo it with the provided Allen key a few months ago to clean it but it was too tight and couldn’t remove it.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Razor tool completely negates weighing the dose. Throw it away. Get your grind and dose right and it won't be needed.

            • +1

@iMagoo: I barely use the razor tool, like you have said there is generally no need for it. I have used it on the odd occasion when using the Breville Smart Grinder Pro because I grinded slightly too much, however since owning the DF64 Gen 2 grinder I haven’t used it at all.

  • Think I'll still go with the one from coffee nerds.

  • +1

Can get similar portafilters from AliExpress . I got one last week, with a Beech handle, for $12 delivered.

    • +2

Son of a beech, that's a good price.

    • Thing that always puts me off is not knowing what stainless steel grade is used - you just have to hope it's food safe.

      • If you are pulling the shot right (ie no spraying) then the coffee doesn't come into contact with the portafilter, just the basket. And you wouldn't be using the supplied basket as they are rubbish.

        • True, but not worth it still IMO

      • Price tends to be a giveaway - too cheap to be true yada yada.

    • Just be careful giving them a knock. They sometimes shatter.

Knock the puck out in your hand / soft mat and you wont have a problem.

      • +1

I've never knocked one out into my hand before.

        • Haha, I use my hand to bang it out but have the portafilter inside a plastic bag so there's no mess.

          • @WatchNerd: Can judge puck prep by how it comes out. Should come out in one piece. If it breaks up, normally means it hasn't compressed or water hasn't equally penetrated the middle.

        • I always use my hand. Thick skin though maybe. Slap it in my hand, snap it in half and check for even colour…chuck it on the lawn for fertilizer.

        • that's what a knock box is for?

          • @gadget: Never understood the need for one.

Pour shot, remove filter, steam milk..puck is now well cold enough. Pop in hand (comes out as a disk), place in bin/ garden/ lawn.

Lots of chatter around cheap handles breaking on knock boxes.Clutter that may break your handle ..pass.

            • @tunzafun001: Never thought about that, but makes sense.

I used to sort of swing the handle at the compost bin like a hammer, but stopping it in mid air so momentum would take the puck out, but it was easier to get a knock box and hit it against the rail.

  • Ordered a naked filter and screen from barista brew today
Hopefully not a scammer website upmarking junk from AliExpress. I was getting those vibes from coffee nerd.

Anyway looking forward to finally going naked lol.

  • I received my order of this portafilter on Saturday, the quality seems OK for $41:

    https://ibb.co/4mLvptj

However I will never know if the handle snaps after a bit of use like the reports on Amazon have mentioned, because when I got my Breville Dual Boiler back from repair today (the service man has put a large scratch in the stainless steel finish on the front display/button face, which wasn’t there before I took it in for repair, so I’ll definitely be addressing it with Breville), I tried to use this NEOUZA 58mm Bottomless Portafilter with my Dual Boiler but it doesn’t fit with a basket in it, which means it’s going straight back to Amazon.au.

    • My BDB was from Dec 2022 (BES920BSS) and the portafilter/basket combo fits.

That being said, the very first shot I tried to pour with the new filter, I mustn't have tightened it in the group head sufficiently and the pressure when pulling the shot proceeded to untighten the filter which I caught just in time.

I purchased that 15cm replacement stainless steel cup bolt too from Bunnings to potentially modify how the handle attaches to the portafilter - however the grub screw in the wooden handle is super tight and won't release. So I'm going to leave it for now. If the wood does splinter as reviews have suggested may occur, i'll just create a new handle from an old piece of rounded timber.

      • @mshanann - My Breville dual boiler that it wouldn’t fit was from the new stock batch that entered Australia at the end of October 2023, after months of them being out of stock here. Someone who left a review on Amazon.au commented that this NEOUZA 58mm Bottomless Portafilter didn’t fit their Breville Dual boiler machine that they purchased in 2024 either.
