OzBargain Birthday Meetup - How Long Should The Event Go For?

Hi guys,

As I start planning for the OzB Birthday Meetups this year, I’d like to know everyone’s preference on how long the event should be. Consider past events.

Please vote on the poll accordingly.

I’m planning some exciting meetups this year 🤩

Thanks
ISP

Where is the option of good old fashioned 48 hour mega lan/ gaming session featuring classics like time splitters 2 and hello kitty island adventure?

  • +2

Should I go with 4 hours if the three days option is missing? lol

  • +7

    Introverts < 2hrs
    Extroverts > 24hrs

I guess it will also depend on the atmosphere & activities.

    • +3

will also depend on the atmosphere & activities.

Also depends on what scotty's budget will be for this year

      • +3

Require a refundable deposit to cover more too. It's worked well for preventing no shows.

        • +1

It's worked well for preventing no shows.

Wasn't there a new 'badge' (black dot?) to stick onto those no-shows ?

      • +3

I mean drinking goon in the park is fairly affordable.

      • +4

Best work party I've ever been too, when after 5 hours of food and drinks we'd only burnt through 2/3rds of the tab.

The last hour of our 6 hour booking was a pretty solid effort of those remaining to finish it off via cocktails and top shelf drinks, before the venue agreed to extend out booking to finish it off. I don't remember much after that.

      • +1

I expect the budget will rival the Jordan Belfort parties you saw in Wolf of Wallstreet.

    • @rompastompa

      Ambiverts ><💥hrs

    • Yes, played party games (free hire) with ozbargainers at Fortress one year and it was nice to have several hours there.

  • +8

    Until the freebies run out.

  • +4

4+ hours. I need time to chat to everyone and have my yearly photo with Scotty.

    • Need to get a Tassie meetup this year!

      • +1

We had a mini meetup a few weeks back. It involved snow and tunnels.

  • +1

Considering I have a long way from Outback SA I would like to make the most of my stay.

    • I might be your way around Oct/Nov, maybe we can have a birthday spot at the Trans?

  • Come to Vic, surely!!!!

    • +3

      Stop calling me surely

  • +2

    48-72 hours

  • If games are in the offing I think we should put the booking sheet up before the event. That way people can nominate what they want to do and we can get through as many games as possible.

The Christmas do last year in Melbourne was fantastic.

  • +7

Do attendees tell each other their usernames or real names or both? I’m torn between attending and also want to stay anonymous.

    • Yes.

    • I think it is a don’t ask don’t tell convention.

      • It'd be interesting to play a "Guess Who?" type game - ask questions to try to narrow down someone's username (maybe from a list of attendees?) We could call it "Dox Who?" :P

    • It is probably like swinger style, everything can nothing must!

    • Everyone wore username name tag/sticker on their shirt in certain meetup. If only eating in a restaurant, no sticker depends on the organiser maybe. It's up to you.

      • You guys ever see SlavOz at the meetups.

        • I can't remember that username

        • No but we all met jv a few times.

      • +1

I'll be keeping my eye out for Broden and will be 100% making sure that I get to the pizza before he does.

    • +1

I guess when you offer your QR-code to be scanned in as "attended",
you don't have to mention to the host organizer of your username, but the will find out :-)

For the rest of the meet, you can choose how you introduce yourself.
No one really will pressure you to reveal your username either.

    • I'm curious to see what jv looks like IRL.

      • He's a damn fine looking man.

        • I thought jv is a physical she

    • @soan papdi: I would love to catch up with sucha nice Indian Sweet🤪

  • +2

Should go until at least the early hours of the next morning.

  • +2

    420 minutes 🍿🍟🍕🍰🍪

  • +3

Until the food stops coming out

  • I try to picture the average OZB user. I remember people had a run on an orange watch and orange runners here. This paired with the LSKD storm-coloured shorts we got for free would be quite a sight! Do we hide or do we have name tags? I am a bit scared to reveal who I am in case the Airjo guy rocks up!

    • +1

Everyone wore username name tag/sticker on their shirt in certain meetup. If only eating in a restaurant, no sticker or depends on the organiser. It's up to you.

  • +7

2 hours?? an event once a year and you guys want to meet for only 2 hours? 😩

    • +5

      Got bargains to hunt.

      • +2

Yes, but by attending, you combine your talents with the OzB brains trust, resulting in less time needed to hunt said bargains, thereby freeing up your overall time in the day.

    • +1

I am not travelling 1000s of km for 2 hours!

      • +2

Don't forget to claim your travel expenses on tax. It's what I've done everytime I've flown to Sydney for a meetup.

        • That is very CLEAR!

      • Depreciating asset cost of a High Yield Investment Vehicle, with the fuel expense over the great distance,
is the good reason for the tax write-off incentive needed to justify attending :-)

    • Additional meeting via Zoom/Microsoft Teams :P

      I chose 4 hours ;-)

    • I think some people only go for the free food so want to get out of there as quickly as possible.

      • +2

There are OzBargainers who have accounts on here purely for that. They're only active at the time of the meetups and you see them attending nearly all of them.

        • +3

@Clear that won't be happening this year as there will be a limit to how many events a single person can attend ;)

  • Is it cheaper per hour the longer it is?

    • +1

As long as it is within budget for each location, it doesn't matter I think.

  • +1

Will the stamp vending machine guy from this video be there? https://www.youtube.com/live/qy8GKzRmpkg?si=R6W3CO6_TyPHMIdI

  • +1

I hope there will be an early November meetup (Nov 1-7) as I am overseas for the rest of the month.

    • Attend via Zoom call ?

  • +4

I go for a good time not a long time

  • +3

Can I suggest a speed dating style meetup? Might sound funny but as an introvert and this removes the awkwardness of me having to walk up to someone and start a random convo or suddenly intruding into a group already deep in a convo

    • +2

Chug a few beers before walking in the venue

    • Can I suggest a speed dating style meetup?

removes … having to walk up to someone

So, you should sit still in your seat, while everyone takes turns and 5-minutes to chat to you?

    • +1

The organisers are often looking for volunteers to do things. It is a way to chat to people with a purpose. The difference between introverts and extroverts is extroverts think “stuff it, what do I lose” and step in.

      • If I volunteer can I get a Oz bargain 🧢?

  • Is it true that all participants got a copy of Thai Honey at the last meeting?

    • There were many meetups. So the answer is no.

      • +1

I'm the only one with a copy and it's in my secure box along with the bluey coins.

  • 2 hrs or longer if you want to stay

  • +1

4 hours with the option to drop in
