ALDI Coffee - Medium - Bad Batch? July 24 Roast? (Solved)

Anyone else got Aldi Medium beans lately (late July roast date)?

I'm finding them bitter/ awful? Normally impressed with them.

Using a Barista Express. 1.5:1

Just wondering if it's a bad batch?

    Right…time to fess up.

Looked in the freezer and the new bag hadn't been opened yet.

My parents dropped an older bag off before going away…I was using that ..and fair to say it's well stale..

    So yep, I'm a goose!

  • Don't notice any issues with my Aldi Medium beans

    • 25/7/24 roast date?

The January batch was superb. This ..not so much…

BUT.could be a machine issue (inconsistent temp at the thermoblock etc).

      • Could you take the beans to another machine and see if it’s any different?

  • Yeah, I've noticed some variability with Aldi coffee.

I suppose it is like any agricultural product, crops vary?

    • Yeah, I wonder if winter is a bad time for these beans. Summer roasts seemed to be great.

  • 1.5:1

Curious why you are grinding at 1.5 to 1?

    • 10g shot, 15g extraction out (single basket).

      • Yeah, I mean usually they say 2 to 1 ratio, e.g 9g ->18g, so just wondering why the smaller ratio.

        • The last bit is the bitter bit. So went shorter at 1.5:1 and still bitter. BUT..see the last post .. the issue was entirely me (got bags mixed up).

I've never enjoyed Aldi beans that much despite some people swearing by them.

  • I find coffee tastes bitter if you haven't got the proper grind to extraction time ratio

Not sure who would’ve negged this, but here is a + to even the score

  • Been a big fan of the Dark Roast for years using Bezzera machine - found it consistent, suited my taste - and terrific value. The last bag is woeful and won't even be using it - I know everyone's cutting back but I'd prefer to pay and few dollars extra and keep the quality.
Maybe if was a one-off so will retry in a month or two - at the moment it's back to the $50+ beans - not happy Jan!

    • Yeah, I had a bad bag of dark as well. Same for the Brazil. What is the roast date on your bad bag out of interest? (Ie printed back to front on the side, near the top).

      • "Best before 19 Jul 2025 - B 240419 16:53" - printed on bag so 19 April?

        • Yep, that's it. They should be into the August roasts now.

  • I'm sorely tempted to try them as the RRP for my regular coffee is now $48/kg - thankfully regular 50% specials mean I can still buy it for it's old full-price.

    • Limeblue is good. Even the Coles Urban is ok ($6/kg last month for the Intense).
