Need a high Nm torque wrench

I need to get a higher Nm rated torque wrench to do a wheel hub replacement on my car. The nut torque specification is 305 Nm.

I only have a couple of torque wrenches but they do not go to that range. It is not for workshop use, so I would be okay with a very small deviation +/-.
My budget would ideally be under $200. Or I am quite happy to do a tool rental if anything like that is available in SA.

  • If its just a one off job you can use luggage scales with your existing tools.

    • 100ish kg at 300mm tool length is ball park

      .

    • So to do this, I would just take a luggage scale and pull to a specified force to generate the torque needed? I do have luggage scales but I don't know if it can handle too much force.

      • +1

        "I don't know if it can handle too much force"
        use a longer lever then
        .

        • Shit you are right. I will be looking for a breaker bar.

          • @TeamSAXON: In case you’re unaware, the lever length is measured to the contact point of your scale, not the overall length of the bar.

      • In this case you have 305 Newtons acting at 1m
        torque = force x length

        force = torque / length

        Force is in newtons. Divide by gravity to get kg. 305/9.81 = 31.1 kg

        Divide again by the length at point of action. If your lever is 0.5m you'd have 31.1/0.5 = 62.2 kg.

        62.2x9.81x0.5=305 Nm

  • If you're an account holder or on good terms with your local tyre shop they may be willing to loan you one
