  • Great quality

  • I have the 54mm version of this (with a Breville Bambino) and it’s great. Helps work out prep but also…. So pretty to watch.

    Great price!

Anyone found a decent deal on the 54mm version or similar? (For Breville Barista Pro) https://amzn.asia/d/6cLQ15t

Isn't the one you linked to at near historic lows on Amazon according to CCC? Cheapest I could find on eBay was about $20 more expensive.

      • +1

Oh right, I'm on phone so haven't looked into it much more than a quick Amazon search. Thanks for letting me know!

    • im thinking of grabbing one too for the Breville Barista Express.

    • Just buy an identical spec one from aliexpress for $30

  • Good filter, tempted to pick up a 2nd at this price for quick multiple brews

One thing i have noticed recently though is that i'm starting to get a bit of slippage sometimes. It's come off once so I usually just keep a finger at bay on the handle now. Not sure what would have triggered this becoming a thing?

Group head seal becoming warn out. $15 on eBay, or trace a ring of ice cream lid and stick it under the old seal to pop it back out a few mm..

      • I bought this one for Bambino plus but lots of tiny espresso squirts coming out horizontally making a huge mess!
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/314253785462?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

Any idea what would cause that?

I also had it drop out twice so I will try the trick you mentioned

        • The link from OP has info on cause and solution that you might find helpful. For example (not sure if this is your issue).

When the coffee puck has a channelling during extraction, it will appear in the following ways: the splashing liquid is sprayed like a geyser; the coffee liquid can be seen spraying from different angles and so on. Not only newbies, even baristas also have this problem.

Cause: The coffee powder is too coarse, and the gap between the granules is large, which is not enough to press the sieve hole; the dose is not enough.

Solution: Improve the use of powder hammer and powder distributor skills; adjust the dose.

@JaxSantiago: @JaxSantiago this advice is exactly polar opposite wrong. The squirting channels issue is from grinding "too fine", and the solution is to go coarser

        • +4

This is exactly why you use a bottomless basket.

The 'squirts' are channelling. Means you will have some parts of the coffee over extracted and some under extracted..net result, poor coffee.

Grinding too fine with an inconsistent puck prep is the number 1 cause. Try grinding one or two numbers coarser. Might need to tamp a bit harder to compensate.

BUT.. While I don't know how the Bambino delivers water from inside the shower head, I do know (and own) the Barista Express that delivers water from a single exit hole (others have a ring of holes). Therefore it's more likely to channel (squirt) on the side the water is delivered from. Crap design.

Also, the Barista Express goes way beyond 9 bar. Bambino might be the same. I wired a dimmer / speed controller to the pump so I can start the puck slowly/ low pressure. Build up to 9 bar, then taper it off.
In default form, the Barista Express does 3 seconds of 4 bar pre infusion…then goes full 12 bar… channeling express. Especially on single shots.

Only solution is to get your puck prep perfect and possibly use a puck screen to disperse the water further.

          • @tunzafun001: Thanks! Makes logical sense! Will report back.
The Bambino has a mesh screen with lots of little holes from where the water is delivered

            • @leeroys_dad: That's the "shower screen"..but unscrew that and look where the actual water enters.

              • @tunzafun001: You've said this before so I did a bit of an experiment & took the shower screen off as I normally do every 2 or 3 weeks to clean it, then ran water from the tap with the finest stream I could get at a distance of about 30cm.

As I thought it has no impact on water coming out more to one side because the shower screen holes are too small. It works on a build up of water pressure instead.

@WatchNerd: TIL I need to clean my shower screen 😜
Yes it also has 1 home where water is delivered.

Thanks. Cleaned and will retest the extraction

                  • @leeroys_dad: Hey mate, you might also benefit from using a WDT (whisk stirrer thing) if you aren't already. I thought it was a load of wank but got one of Aliexpress since it was only a few bucks and it actually did make a difference … should help develop the single stream in the centre that you are chasing.

                    • @liam2040: @liam2040
I'm on the fence on this one, as when you pull out the WDT, you are technically leaving small tubes in the puck.
Scaled up, like whacking a tomato stake in your lawn and then pulling it out.
Never seen a Barista use one. Always a tap from all 4 sides (including the handle forward). Then a vertical tap to settle it down. Then a tamp.

Again (if scaled up) and your challenge was to get gravel to settle into the bottom of a bucket, I'd shake and tap it to get it to settle best. I wouldnt stir it with a sticks?

I think if your 'tapping' isn't on point, then a WDT would help.

                • @WatchNerd: @WatchNerd Is that a Barista Express or Bambino you are taking about?

Not sure what you mean by finest stream?

As for small holes, you be surprised with water. For example, have a look at a 6L or 9L water restrictor inside your actual shower. Tiny, tiny little holes…but all that water in the shower still comes through those tiny holes. So the shower screen doesn't disperse it much at all. Pin holes are actually WAY too big. https://images.app.goo.gl/nU51GY4AhHQACWwy5

With the Barista Express example, it always channels on the side the water enters on under the shower screen. Puck screen helps a bit.

58mm recommendations? Most on Amazon have only a couple reviews

      • So not a recommendation… just a sign you can do a search on Amazon?

        • Okay fine if wanting an actual recommendation then it has to be mhw-3bomber. 100%. My sunbeam group basket part stopped making a seal randomly and the new gasket wouldn't even hold so I turfed the old sunbeam/wpm original handle and changed to Bomber. It's fantastic. Well made and flows perfectly.

    • Also keen for some on the same size. Have a Sunbeam EM6900

      • Mhw-3bomber… Available on AliExp and direct website but if wanting a change from the original sunbeam / wpm welhome factory supplied items then definitely try bomber. Treat yourself to a wdt tool and a distributor too. Especially with a machine as old and no doubt well used machine like a 6900 ;)

  • Is this compatible with the Delonghi EC885?

    • +1

Yes. I got one of these a year ago for my Delonghi ec885.

      • Thanks doc, got one :)

  • Man this post has sent me down the rabbit hole. I must get one for my bes920!

  • hard to find one fit for ec885

    • According to docbert above, this one fits

  • I got a 54mm one from aliexpress a couple of weeks ago and they are great quality, i imagine it is likely the same as sold on Amazon but at a fraction of the price
