I am typing this on the Surface Book 2 and it's still going strong after all this time :)
Although I am slowly moving to the Surface Laptop 7th Edition on ARM and that's impressive also.
That's not to say this isn't an incredible deal!

    • Hi just curious if you've run into any compatibility or stability issues with ARM?

      • +6

The only issue I have had with the Surface Laptop on ARM is with a very niche app called ProTools (audio editing) along with its associated Focusrite external audio interface (no driver yet), but I am sure most people would never use this.
The Adobe CC suite is incredible on it, so far :)
Everything else I use works as good or better on ARM (snappier).

        • +2

          Appreciate your insight!

    • +1

I got the 2 as well. I just love the form factor and that you can go with the screen and it's still a proper windows tablet.

Alas my Laptop 4 died and got the 5 as replacement so it's been my daily device.

But with this price might buy this one as a spare :P

    • on ARM

What do you mean by this?

Is ARM like a SOC, like the Macbooks?
…meaning minimal use of fan because it stays cool, amazing battery life and performance?

      • Correct.
All laptops brands now have ARM versions of their devices, that have launched in the last couple of months.
All the latest Surface devices for consumers are ARM only.

        • +1

Wow that changes everything for laptops…

Thank you. Now we don't have to compromise with windows laptops. Like why buy Macbooks now

          • +1

            @smartProverble: Well, its complicated.

I've been running a Surface Pro 11 on ARM for the last few months.

Excellent battery life, very snappy performance (on supported apps which is increasing quickly for mainstream but not for non-mainstream apps).
I've been able to run some nonnative 3d printing apps OK like Fusion 360 and Bambu Studio.
Very rarely do you hear fans and it stays relatively cool to touch. Doesnt lose 3quarters of its battery life everytime you put it to sleep (pfft).

Definitely something like a Surface 7 (conventional laptop design) will compete very well with an M3 air, some things the mac is still better but other things the Windows on ARM is a better solution so yeah about the same.

The Mac Pro and Max products however are much more powerful depending on whether your application needs it
i.e. the Apple chip is definitely a more mature design than the Snapdragon Elite ARM … but that will likely only matter to you if you do something very specific ….and the Pro and Max processors will ramp up their fans for those intensive tasks too lol.

            So the summary is,

            • If you were looking to buy a macbook air, definitely consider the Microsoft Surface Book 7 or Surface Pro 11 (I love the latter!!)

            • If you were looking at a 13" ipad with its keyboard, I'd get the surface pro 11 OLED version any day (slightly worse but OLED panel, but much much much more like a full PC for similar size and weight) due to its more useable power

            • if you were looking at an 11" ipad, there is no real competitor

            • If you were looking to buy the Macbook pro or Max….windows gaming laptops (not the ARM ones) are the equivalent (see Asus Pro Art PX13 series) with the new AMD chips - they'll compete on performance but the windows machines run hotter but they can play games and the macs really cant

            Hope this helps!!

If this was 16GB I'd jump on it. Loved my SB2, had it for years before the battery died. Bit of a hefty unit but a pleasure to use.

  • +5

I swore off Surface Book's when my Surface Book battery ballooned and swelled up. Microsoft offered to replace for around $1000 as it was out of warranty. It was a common problem in the first generation, not sure with the newer ones. Never again.

    • +10

      Planned obsolescence.

    • +2

Battery replacement for $1000?!?! Geez, why is it so hard? You can replace a battery on a dell for about $40.

      • +3

Its basically a tablet. Taking this thing apart requires a dremel and a crapton of effort.

The Surface pros 7+ and above have easily replaceable hard drives, which is something.

        • +9

I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude 7200 which is a Surface Pro-like tablet/2-in-1, and Dell even provided service manual on their website on how to take it apart to replace battery & SSD. I still don't see why Microsoft has to copy Apple and makes their devices difficult to service by their users.

          • +7

@scotty: Newer Surface devices are now more "environmentally conscious", which is code for the 'EU forced us to make our devices repairable and upgradable, so now you can fix and upgrade things'

          • @scotty: They don't make them difficult on all the current devices, they are easier than Apple to replace some parts like the SSD, along with manuals and videos of how to get the job done.
This device, Surface Book 3, is an old product that hasn't been made for years.

          • -1

@scotty: The latitude 2-in-1s are much thicker and much heavier than an iPad or surface pro. A device like the m4 iPad Pro that is less than 5.5mm thick will always be difficult to repair.

            • +3

@lunchbox99: The Latitude 7200 I bought was from 2019. I have also used Surface Pro 7 from the same era, and it is less than 1mm thinner (8.5mm vs 9.3mm) but significantly more difficult to take apart.

A device like the m4 iPad Pro that is less than 5.5mm thick will always be difficult to repair.

That just shows the designer/manufacturer's priority. I understand that there's a market for thinner and more integrated products. However personally I do not mind having my electronic devices being a little bit thicker/heavier so I can service it myself to prolong its life. It's easy to google "Latitude 7200 battery" and find a compatible one for less than $70. Unscrew 6 screws, use plastic scribe to pry open the display and you get to access the battery. No heat gun needed (unlike the older Surface Pro).

Good to know that the newer Surface Pro are more user serviceable though.

              • @scotty: I have had (and still use) the latitude 2-in-1 for work upgrading every 2 years. They are so much chunkier than a "proper tablet".

Nobody in their right mind would use the dell 2-in-1 as a tablet except for brief periods - heavier, noisier, much worse battery. None of my staff ever use them as a tablet and asked to go back to the equivalent latitude laptop (ie non 2-in-1).

I think to make a genuinely good tablet, you do need to make them exceptionally thin and lightweight, like an iPad, and this does pose significant repairability challenges. Not saying I disagree with the concept of repairability, but sometimes there is a limit if you want tiny devices.

It's the same reason people have to get expensive mechanical watches repaired at a specialist.

I would argue for the above reasons the surface pro has never been a great tablet either. Certainly not in the same league as an iPad or galaxy tablet.

                • @lunchbox99: Why doesn't someone make an iPad form factor that can run Windows? I use my M1 iPad Pro daily but iOS is such a waste.

                  • @fredblogs: No reason it can't happen now the new snapdragon x series chips are out.

Be interesting to see if they can make it repairable. They should be able to add a ram and ssd hatch. If they can also make the battery and display modular that would be even better.

    • Mine just basically stopped turning on

    • +1

My experience has been different. Still using my SB1 after 7 years. It's now only just starting to have battery issues, and even still, it gives me 3-5 hours of battery life.

  • How many nits brightness? I have laptop 4 and it's so dim

  • Random question but is the USB-C port on these good enough to power the device? I only ask as I remember on the SB2 that wasn't the case.. the USB-C wasn't good enough to POWER the device. However was this the case with the Book 3's?

Another way to ask the question.. could I live with this device and a 65W USB-C power cable charger??

    • You could power the i5 non-dGPU ver!

    • My SB2 could be powered by USB-C, I was able to use a 45w Xiaomi power bank to charge it. I had the dGPU variant.

If the dGPU was in use it might consume more power than it was being charged with. The USB-C port would also not work if the Surface connector was in use.

  • Windows 10 is a little strange? Given these should have been securely wiped and they support 11, don't know why they wouldn't at least install the latest version of Windows.

    • +4

      because windows 11 sucks!!

      • +1

        I really Ike windows 11

      • You prefer sharp squares to rounded corners?

      • i really don't like how certain stuff in windows eleven is like broken…

and Makin certain settings harder like no sound control panel it's a pain to get that.

  • +1

damn it was almost good till I realized not thunderbolt port…. o well.

  • I bought my son the surfacebook 1 i7 8g w/ 256 when he was in Year6. It kept having issues so Microsoft kept replacing/upgrading us. Now he has surfacebook 3 i7 32g with 512 memory.

    • +2

i bought an original surface pro and it gave me shocks while plugged in and they refused to replace it.

      • +1

        Mine did this too!

      • -1

Shocks or the normal the tingling sensation when rubbing the metal parts of the device? My phones do this and based on some research it's normal because my chargers aren't grounded.

  • +3

Any chance you’ll get the models that had dedicated graphics (gpu) ?

  • Would these be suitable for a year 7 student next year?

    • Hardware is more than sufficient. However, they don't like being dropped very much. Its not especially kid friendly in terms of durability.

      • Thanks for the reply. Any idea on battery life if these are at least at 80% health? Would it make it through a school day?

  • The image is of a SB2 ahaha

  • The link doesn't seem to work.

  • 1035G7? Is that series 10 or 1 or 7?

    • 10th gen yo

  • +4

My surface book had the screen spontaneously get a hairline crack across it likely battery swell

  • +1

Is there a way to prevent these battery swell?

  • +3

This is a bloody good deal…

    10th gen Intel processor.

    Screen that also isn't 720p /HD.

    Less than $500.

This is a definite BUY if you're on a budget and looking for decent performance especially for everyday tasks. Upgradable to Windows 11 too.

  • Just bought 1
Let's see how it goes =)

  • +1

Im a mac user but i think the surface books were one of the best laptops ive ever used.

    • -1

Have your tried the new Surface Laptop powered by ARM?

  • Appreciate any thoughts - why would you buy this compared to a newer budget laptop? (plenty of new laptops <$500 albeit the specs on this, even as a 4 year laptop, is far better)

    • +3

      You've answered your own question

  • I have surface laptop 3 16gb with similar chip. Fantastic laptop that I still use to this day. Running win 11 no issues.

  • From the same seller on eBay, I can get this for $469 after a $30 discount, but their listing states "No returns accepted." Does this mean it won’t be covered by eBay if there are any defects? I’d prefer buying it through eBay for peace of mind.

  • I want the one with 512gb hdd, 16gb ram, and dedicated gpu.

  • Dumb question, but I'm assuming that an AC charger is included?

  • Another dumb question, is this a good replacement for a tablet or would a $450 tablet be better?

    • It is not far from it. If budget is not a problem, then this is a good alternative.

  • Received mine today, is there a trick to turning it on?
Press the power button, nothing happens.
I also press the undock button and it lights up red.

  • Received mine today and was sent a Surfacebook 2 instead of 3. Not sure if anyone else had this problem?

  • Received mine but had issues with the battery not lasting long enough as I would expect and when updating the OS using USB, it doesnt allow me to do that. Any idea if someone managed to fix these issues? I might return if the issue persist.

    • upgrading to windows 11 didn't work well for me either (i.e. slowed down the machine considerably), so I switched back to win10 and it has been OK

  • +1

Mine arrived today. Pretty good exterior condition and well packed also battery life still 78% tablet and 96% main left. Happy with my purchase. Thank you metrocom

  • I noticed that these are on Amazon for $20 more, but with a 12 month warranty.
Are they snappy in their responsiveness? I'm used to apple stuff, and old windows laptops
feel like walking in water-filled boots.

  • Received mine and it’s like new.

Upgraded to Windows 11 with no issues.

Also, would like to point out its not Micro SD, it’s a full sized SD that sticks out when inserted.

    Very happy with my purchase.

  • Anyone know if these come with a backlit keyboard?
