Help Bloom My Bougainvillea Plant

Hi All,
I’m back seeking help as you guys are the best. I got good tips to save my lawn.

Now I need your advice with bougainvillea to bloom.

We bought few bougainvillea plants on a pot from Bunnings exactly 10 months ago. They were tiny but had lovely purple colour leaves.

Since then it’s gone big. Two of them are growing over a makeshift arc I bought. Other two climbing away over the fence.

I have set fertilisers, potassium got them sun, pruned them but it keeps growing with branches not a single colourful leaves.

What do I do next?

  • Cut back on water and fertiliser, stop pruning

Keep them mean. My mother has them growing at her house in western NSW (so not a lot of rain). They get no feeding and only water from rain. The produce a magnificent display.

    1. Sunlight: Ensure your bougainvillea gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. They thrive in bright, sunny locations.

    2. Watering: Water sparingly. Bougainvilleas prefer dry conditions between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot and fewer blooms.

    3. Soil: Use well-draining soil. Bougainvilleas don't like to sit in water, so a loamy or sandy soil mix is ideal.

    4. Fertilizing: Use a high-phosphorus fertilizer to promote blooming. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

    5. Pruning: Regularly prune your bougainvillea to encourage new growth and more flowers. Remove dead or weak branches and trim back after each blooming cycle.

    6. Temperature: Keep your plant in a warm environment. Bougainvilleas thrive in temperatures between 18°C to 35°C.

    7. Stress: Bougainvilleas bloom more when they experience a bit of stress. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings to encourage blooming.

    • Thank you mate. I’ve done everything by the book but also made mistakes.

I saw the other day my soil around the plant seems not so dry. I have added a lot of fertiliser and potassium last year.

Could you recommend what I can do in terms of the soil to make it dry and re the fertiliser what do I buy from Bunnings (link)? If I have used too much fertilisers then do I somehow reduce it?

      • You do know that is a response from chatgpt?

        • Damn. I got tricked.

  • I have done those steps. I didn’t water them.
The only thing I can think I must have used too much fertiliser.

How can I reduce the fertiliser I used last year? Is there a way I can add something that will negate the fertiliser?

Also pruning is advised but not too much.

I had them at my old house.

i did nothing with them except for cut the absolute hell out of them every 4 months.

they would grow like crazy .

just let yours grow. add nothing - except water. they will soon take off (especially after winter) and then soon you'll curse the day you planted them

    • It’s getting to be a year. How long do I get to see the plant getting taller greener but no leaves?

gotta wait for warmer weather to kick in.

    Kill them.

    They're an invasive pest.
