  • I was happy when i grabbed this for $150 few weeks back, good find OP

    • cheers I was happy at 150 too, but was stoked to see it even lower

Was in Tokyo a few months back.

This was about $90 in Liquor Mountain.

Out taxes on alcohol are crazy.

    • +1

I agree. My brother is currently working in London and everytime I ask him how much a drink is, it's basically our "bargain" price in GBP. For example, Glenlivet 12 standard price is between £28-32 GBP. That is pretty much out special price here…

      • +1

To be fair… I think it's slightly closer to the distillery for the UK market compared to AU

        • I was in Edinburgh 2 months ago and to my surprise, JW range was more expensive than the standard price here. E.g. JW Black was 34 GBP and Blue was 159 GBP. Perhaps I was in a "city" whisky store targeting tourists.

          • +1

@gezza90: Our Aussie taxes on this 18yr Glenfiddich (excise and gst) would be about ~$40aud

In comparison in the UK the taxes on this (duty and vat) would be about ~£20gbp

So they are taxed about the same 😬 duty in UK is lower than Australias excise tax, but their VAT at %20 is higher than our 10% GST.

            • @Scoobth: Makes sense. Checked with my brother and he said the 18yr Glenfiddich is £79 ($154 AUD) Standard price in London and it has been on HotUKDeals (UK version of OzB) for £58 ($113 AUD). Their standard price is pretty much ozzy price minus the excise and gst.

  • As someone who doesn't drink much whisky, is there a "correct" way to drink these? Straight, on the rocks or is it sacrilegious to water it down with water? Or just personal preference?

    • Straight

    • +4

Usually on the rocks for me or add water if it is too strong, but you should try every way you like to find out what you like most.

    • +1

It's both sacreligeous and also however you want. Generally could put a tiny bit of water in a cask strength to taste it a bit better.
But if you're paying for it, drink it however you want

    • +2

Neat with a couple drops of water is how i usually drink single malts. You could use those ice stones if you wanted it cold. I would never add ice or water/any other mixers. Thats what blended whiskys are for

    • +13

Try it straight. not for you? Then, put a rock. not for you? Then, add a dash of water. not for you? send it to me.

    • -1

The correct way to drink it is whatever way you enjoy it.

FYI I like my Scotch with a touch of water or ice, and my wife with more water

    Good deal.

  • Just a reminder as well, Dan Murphy's will price match this if you don't have a first choice nearby.

    • @Child - Many Dan’s won’t price match if there’s not a First Choice Liquor store within 10km of their store that also has stock. Many Dan’s won’t price match other retailers prices with the use of online discount codes either… My local Dan’s does for me though because after it had been rejected by staff a couple of times I went in and had a conversation with the manager, and presented a valid argument for accepting them under their policy based on my interpretation of their wording.

      • +2

I just did it online through their live chat and placed it as a click & collect order. They agreed to match it as soon as I sent the link and told them about the discount code, even before they even knew where I was picking it up from, so might be better to do it that way so you don't have to deal with managers and stuff.

        • Their price match rules are different for online compared to in store. I only had to deal with the manager once, and after that he instructed his staff to accept the codes. I have never had a problem since. There is a Dan’s store close to where I live, I much prefer going there in person than placing an online order, and dealing with the staff at my local than their online chat staff to price match who I’m not familiar with.

I bought a bottle of this Glenfiddich 18 year in February last year for around this price. I remember thinking it was a bit average, I might give it second chance though and pick up another bottle at this price.

    • Wondering whats one you rate higher in same sort ot bracket?

      • +2

Aberlour A'bunadh if you’re referring to price bracket.

        • Nice thats a good drop too, i guess i dont consider them like for like, eg you dont always want cask strength (at least fornme)

          • +1

@Osiris: I agree that cask strength isn’t always what you want to drink, however for a $200 bottle of single malt scotch whisky the Glenfiddich 18 should be higher than 40% ABV.

    • I agree with this, it’s no glenlivet 18 which I remember being wow’d by…but still this is a pretty good price…

  • -3

Used to be a single malt man, now i only go for multymalts.

  • Tried to buy 4 as coupons stacked with "mycoles discount" and "Save 10" and came down to $128 a bottle and clicked purchase and then said coupons no longer applicable :/

  • +1

solid, running low on the fiddich. meanwhile, clowns paying this & 2-3x for non-age japanese nonsense.

    • yeah my thoughts exactly, the japanese whisky's have gone up way too much

    • yep like $180+ for a japanese whisky aged like 3 - 5 years. such a waste of money.

    • But taste so good

  • I got very excited for a minute when I miss-read the title as Glenlivet 18. hopefully it will go on a good sale one day.

    • I'll be waiting for that too!

  • +1

We are paying way too much in Australia.

    • @yamahamoto - Indeed we do, and the consistent tax hikes on alcohol I think is getting to the point of ridiculousness that the Government will soon have to justify it.

I’m happy to vote Albo out at the next election for this reason alone. And the Libs the election after that if they too continue doing the same thing and don’t get the message.

I picked up a bottle of the Glenfiddich 18 from Dan Murphy’s after work for $134, they priced matched and beat First Choice Liquor, and I also grabbed a bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed bourbon whiskey for $92:

    https://ibb.co/F5Rppd3

    • Me too. Did Online chat and without any questions they added it to my account for me to pay and order confirmed for $134

  • +1

Some stupid Dan Murphy's agent refused to price match. Seems like luck of the draw who you get to price match

    • Managed to get them to talk to the manager who agreed to match

    • Was told in store that some staff wont price match, by a staffer who was price matching. Go figure. Luck of the draw confirmed.

      • @Savealopoulos - Did the staff member do the price match for you? If not, what was the reason that the staff member said for refusing the price match? Don’t just fold and accept what the staff tell you, they’re taught and often instructed by their managers to be strict on their price match rules because a lot of customers are dishonest and try to rip them off, however if you feel your price match is valid and genuine based on the wording of their policy and your interpretation of it, and they should be accepted it and agreeing to it, speak to the manager, politely and respectfully of course, and present your case to them.

        • They did price match, but said other staffers in the store won't always price match. No explanation given, none sought.

  • Sold out for Newcastle
