    Wait 'til you test drive

    • I missed to sign up for a test drive at the Melbourne SUV EV expo because I went after 3pm. The lady that encouraged us to do the test drive (an expo attendee, not affiliated) said it was impressive.
I suppose test drives will be available after September

      • G6 was our (my wife and I) pick at Melb Expo three weeks ago, as it provides a very solid package (lidar, auto park, nice sound system, cooled and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, wireless android auto and apple play), looks great (in my view), has a very nice and roomy interior, a nicely sized boot, felt very nice while driving it during the test drive. The rep was fantastic and gave us as much time as we wanted and demonstrated the full extent of the menu, and options.
we hired tesla RWD previously, and from a short test drive of G6 it felt like a more solid car…

    • Battery chemistry
  • I dont see any reason to check out petrol or even hybrid chinese cars, theres plenty of more quality (developed over decades) options.

However, given the much smaller range of EVs available, would definitley consider - IF i was buying. If considering, assess on its merits. I dont think the drivetrain would be a problem. The batteries will be similar to other tech. Its just the fit, finish and software and user experience thats likely to be cheaper. Plus all the legacy makers are In the same position with new tech.

  • it looks nice
    thats all

  • Why not? Test drive first and see. Chinese EVs are great.

      "Chinese EVs are great."
We won't really know that for 20 years
      .

      • +3

If you've get twenty years out of a Ev, you've done pretty well I'd say !

        • If you can't get 20+ years out of a car there's something wrong
          .

People were shitting on Japanese and Korean made cars for decades and they have come good.

Hopefully it'll be the same with Chinese EVs. It is promising but still need to be cautious.

I love that you can pre-order and pay $1000 today, but you won't know the actual price until next month.
‘XPENG G6 pricing will be announced by September 2024’

    • Why would anyone do so… sounds so stupid

      • Same people pre order video games..

    • Thousands of Europeans pay a grand deposit on a Cybertruck
      They have NO ACCC there
Tesla tells them NO money back!

There are 10 new EV makers entering the AU market - I doubt all will still be here in 10 years as the market is too small.
I would be thinking about the long term availability of parts and the likelihood of warranties being honoured.
Same thing has happened many times before with ICE cars: Proton, Lada, Citroen etc

I remember the slogans on Harley's that the owner would rather eat s**t than ride a Japanese bike.
Australia even made televisions amongst huge factories like Phillips etc in Europe. Not even a topic anymore.
Why not a sticker (badge} engineered China made Bimmer?

Probably a decent thing to consider.
If you won’t buy a Tesla because you disagree with Mr Musks politics I wonder if you’ll cut the same negs to Xpeng…..

'Not a Tesla' is a Pro not a Con.

A proper con would be the distributer network and dealer support.
Another con is the privacy implications, read the privacy policy, in short if you use the built-in GPS, you agree to be tracked by the dealer and you also agree to have your phone/social media to be uploaded into the car and god knows where that data will end up.

    • +1

I guess just use a burner SIM/phone for that if it seems like a problem

    • +2

      Fair points
Although I remember Tesla was outed for improperly storing/keeping personal videos of owners in their garages (sentry mode upload) or something along those lines

      • yeah I have reservations about online cars with Sim cards. Tesla have been known to upload in excess of 100GB per month. There is a crazy amount of data on phones that is up for grabs via apps.

It's a wait and see. A lot of the Chinese EVs coming over have been in the China market for like a decade at least.

There's some tuning needed for Australian conditions - roads and heat are the main things.

    • +1

Yep, even Euro cars can be challenged by the hot Aussie sun. Lets see how paint and interiors cope

I'm not a big fan of the huge glass roofs. Heat and hail are a big risk. I saw a news article of someone chucking leftover carpet on a BYD during a hailstorm.

        • I think they do it for safety that is surprising, I have read that the glass roof provides more strength that the metal roof that would crush during an accident. It also makes the car feel more spacious.

I think if hail is going to crack your glass roof, it will dent your metal roof (that could write off the car). All the hail damage car photos that have smashed windows have dented metal roofs as well.

          • +1

@PerthectDeal: I'd prefer dented metal over cracked glass
            .

            • @Nugs: But the cracked glass can be replaced where I don't believe the metal could as easily, i.e they would write off the car.

              • @PerthectDeal: Its fairly easy to repair metal from hail damage. Friends car was recently repaired. Couple of years old, had dents all over roof, bonnet, doors, guards. If the car is older they're more likely to write off with a cracked glass roof.

  • Depends on warranty and price. If they match MG's 10 years warranty with a sub-$60k price then I'll be compelling. If they give a sun-$50k price then its an absolute steal.

  • Cons - as sparse as a Tesla but not a Tesla.

    $65k DA

that's a lot of money to spray on a 1st gen aus. launch

i get that this car seems to get a good rep. overseas but yeah… not for me

    • The article may be a bit outdated, because they haven’t yet confirmed the price in AU for the long range G6, or details around servicing, warranty etc.

I tend to agree that my wallet may not be brave enough to try out this car when it first launches, even though on paper it looks promising (Fisker comes to mind)
