Noob at Prepaid

Hey all, been using plans since forever and recently moved to prepaid (feeling the pinch).

I've seen a lot of people discussing cheapest ways to port in and out and I'm trying to understand:

  1. Why: I assume because you can access Cashrewards promos limited to new numbers, and/or new customers?
  2. How: Is this where you buy a pre-paid sim and activate it from any other provider temporarily before activating the provider you want to actually port to?

Also, are there restrictions on this?
I saw in some threads that you need to wait some time to be considered either a new customer etc.

Real life example:
I'm currently with Boost ($35 monthly).
I'd like to switch to the Boost Prepaid 366 with the Cashrewards promo here (happy to remove this link if needed, but it's just the current offer for $43 cashback on the 260GB for $300, you seemingly don't need to be a new customer, but I could be wrong here):

My plan is near the end of my current month:
1. Buy a cheap prepaid plan (looking at the Kogan $7 one)
2. Activate it once mine expires
3. Buy and activate the boost plan I want

  • Do you have a primary number you need to keep? And how much data do you need?

  • Yes I'd like to keep my current number - approx 20GB. I don't really want to move away from Boost.

    • You will need to port away from boost to keep your number, if you can wait for a cashback deal on amaysim that will give you 50GB for a free month or Lebara 15 GB for $8, 70GB for $12, then port back to Boost.
