Intel 13th and 14th Gen Instability Woes, How Cautious Should I Be Purchasing Them?

So we've seen the reports on intel 13th & 14th gen chips gradually breaking, crashing and generally being pretty average.

I'm doing my annual purchasing rounds and wondering if this is something I should really be taking into account? Should I be buying AMD this year?

Thoughts? Opinions?

In theory if you get a new cpu and have updated the bios to one with the new microcode (0x129), it shouldn't really matter as the voltage shouldn't be spiking to dangerous and degrading levels anymore.

That said, 14th gen is the last of that platform, the new LGA1851 socket + Z890 mobos + Core Ultra launches in 2 months, while AMD claim to support the AM5 socket out to 2027.

What really worried me more was the entire response screamed of 100 lawyers on retainer, attempting to not say anything that would sound remotely like taking responsibility. Which obviously isn't a great look if you're a customer.

    • Yeah, I didn't really think about the new platform releasing soon. Probably just budget around the current platform, submit it, then fudge it later in the year. Less worries and/or dramas that way.

      Thanks

      Just get a 15th Gen then…

Ugh 15th Gen are always on snapgram and face tok…

  • my 13600k is fine

    • Half of people who smoke don't die from it. :P

But less jokingly the issue is not even that widespread, >5% of machines. It's not acceptable numbers though if you're buying a whole load of machines.

I wouldn't buy instability woes, no matter what generation.

    ;-)

  • So I've been digging at the big 3 OEM's and they won't have floor models with 15th gen processors until next year March/April.

    Back to the original question.

I've found some desktops with AMD processors, but it's not like I usually buy and I usually have almost zero issues with my fleet.

  • Whoa this is big news. I was thinking of getting another Alienware but now can wait till 15th gen at least. Thanks for the info.
