Thanks for sharing OP - good prices. JAL usually allows 2 x 23kg checked bags in Economy. https://www.jal.co.jp/jp/en/inter/baggage/checked/

You are quite right. I have updated.

June is a cloudy and rainy month for tourism in Tokyo and it doesn't really get better until October/November IMHO.

    • +1

Also very humid and not enough of air conditioners inside shops and transport.

    • I was in Japan for the first week of June this year. The weather was fantastic, we had rain one night only and there was a light sprinkle for a few hours another day. No issues in June from my experience.

      • The first week is usually ok.
But objectively it gets hotter and more humid with storms.
The rainy season goes from mid-June to late July.

Keep in mind there's a foreign transaction fee when paying to JAL. Got stung by $100 recently.

    • -1

      So Japanese lol

    • +4

No fees when I booked JAL online last year. Nor any fees from an Australian credit card as the payment was processed in Sydney.

Perhaps you booked by phone through the JAL reservation centre, which may incur a $60 fee.

      • This must've changed as my payment was processed in Singapore.

I booked online on JAL website.

    • Were you booking flights ex/within Japan? This is usual practice, including for Qantas when booking with departure from another country.

Also another option is to book via an OTA. Not sure why this is a “I got stung”…

      • +1

Booked return flights from Melbourne to Tokyo, got charged in AUD from Singapore.

      • Got stung because the charge was unexpected. I have previously bought tickets from other airlines with departure from Australia and charged in AUD and never been charged a foreign transaction fee. This is the first time this has happened to me. I booked online from their website.

        • +1

@beesider - Was this fee charged by JAL or by your bank?

I’ve experienced a foreign transaction fee like that from NAB previously when I booked an overseas flight that was priced in AUD. I complained as it was impossible to know beforehand that this would incur a foreign transaction fee and managed to get the fee refunded by NAB.

Since then I’ve used my UBank debit card to book and pay for flights and anything else that may potentially incur a foreign transaction fee and have managed to avoid these fees.

        • -1

          from Singapore

          So…

…there's a foreign transaction fee when transacting via JAL’s Singapore website

          FTFY

          • @ajole: Singaporean website hosted in a Japanese domain zone https://www.jal.co.jp? Ok, today I've learned something new.

            • -2

@beesider: So transacting with a Japanese company in Singapore, you’re expecting to pay in AUD with no fees?

Anyway I just tried to replicate your issue booking normally through JAL’s website from Australia, booking SYD-TYO return and couldn’t see any issues.

I’m just saying - the fee was a ‘you problem’ (or at least your bank). It’s worth being clear about these issues so you actually help people make good choices about how and where they purchase things, rather than just complain to the masses :)

              • -1

@ajole: When transacting with a Japanese company from Australia paying in AUD, yes, I'm expecting to pay in AUD with no fees. I'm not expecting for Singapore to be in this equation at all.

Once again, I bought a return ticket Melbourne - Tokyo. I'm located in Australia. Ticket was priced in AUD. Paid in AUD through PayPal. Got charged a foreign transaction fee as the transaction was processed in Singapore.

                • @beesider: As per the example given by NAB above, it could possibly even happen on a com.au website and paying in AUD. The hosting is irrelevant, it comes down to whether the merchant's payment processor is overseas.

And again while it's not something you could have anticipated, the merchant's payment processing arrangements are outside the bank's control.

  • Want to use JAL but also want to use Qantas points hmmm

    • +2

I also went through this thought process. I ended up going JAL because my friends told me the experience is fantastic compared to Qantas so keen to give it a go. Disappointingly I was stung by the $100 fee beesider mentioned above. I can't confirm if it's foreign transaction fee or something else as it's one lump sum payment, but you could try avoiding it by paying with a card that has 0% international transaction fee.

      • I used Qantas earlier in the year and found it pretty alright. A few delays but nothing really too disastrous personally.

JAL is tempting because of the good reviews too but I got to use these Qantas points eventually lol

        • +1

Fair enough. I haven't flown with Qantas in recent times but I'm sure it's satisfactory. One of the big perks of JAL is 2 x 23kg so something to consider if you want lots of luggage to bring snacks back!

    • +2

seating in JAL feels nicer if that matters to you (syd to hnd, 787 body, 34" pitch. qantas from memory is 31"? both cattle class)

    • +1

We've flown JAL multiple times to Japan using Qantas points now. Make sure you check 365 days in advance if you wanted to use them.

  • +2

If paying with certain Visa cards, don't forget to combine with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/844607 for an additional 5% or 8% off.

  • +1

Just a general comment, 17 Apr to 27 Apr 2025 is where Easter holidays followed by ANZAC day, so if you take 3 days leave you can have 10 days continuous break, and this period is not covered by this deal (of course). So you need to think about when do you really want to go to Japan.

    • +1

Keep in mind it's also Golden Week in Japan from 29/4/25.

  • +1

Any deals for Perth to Tokyo in March 2025?

    • +4

Do you literally just post this shit on every flight deal with pops up?

      • -8

i think you are a victim of airlines aggregators gaslighting. the same propaganda they use on flight attendants.

    • For some reason, airfare posts really draw the crazy out. What does your post even mean?

  • +1

Close but no cigar, bugger. Need mid/late March to early April from Melbourne.

    • +5

They're not going to do sales on those dates when that's peak demand for sakura season. Unfortunate, but to be expected.

      • Also mid April is Easter / school holidays.

      • Add

Start of the new school year in Japan is early April
        Easter 2025
        Australian School Holidays
Golden Week (end of April - early May)

It's one of the busiest times of the year to travel to Japan, hard to find flight deals unless you are willing to travel for a longer period of time to make access to the gaps between peak periods. (e.g. early-mid march - mid april or early may).

    • +1

I managed to booked a deal with JAL in May 2023, for travel mid March - early April 2024 this year. Not as good as ~$900 but got them for around $1090. Easter fell over this period too.

  • +1

Out of all the airlines that fly to Japan, JAL is the one I would only choose

  • -7

I was just back from Japan. The food is costly.

  • +1

ANA also at similar price but with free domestic flights in Japan.

  • No school holidays unfortuantely.

  • Damn, wish it was Feb/Mar from Melbourne…

  • Good price, so you can save us to hand all of your money to the hotels - rooms are so freaking expensive!!

    • +5

Are people staying in 4/5 star hotels in Tokyo's busiest areas or something?

I've never had complaints about hotel or food costs in Japan, especially compared to everywhere in Western Europe/Scandinavia.

I was usually able to find excellent hotels for $100-150.

The only time I felt I got stung was a very short notice stay at a hotel when trains got cancelled from flooding, but I assume that was surge pricing.

      • Yea I normally book 4/5 stars, it’s like $700+ per night easily
