Looking for Recommendation for Economical Compact Camera

Just wondering if thera are any decent digital camera's that take slightly better photos than phone?

Not looking for expensive one as this is for a young adult. Ideally under $200-$300.

  • better than phone

What phone though. Even 3 generstion old Samsung or Apple flagship will be hard to beat with a $300 camera.

  • +1

IMO, buy them a cheap second hand DSLR. A couple of gen old camera doesn't cost much and a couple of cheap primes will teach them a tonne about photography. Then they can throw it in the back of the closet like the rest of us.

Other option is a good lens to add to their phone. It'll improve photos without taking away the handiness of having it on a phone. You can spend $2-300 on these, look at some of the Moment ones.

Mid range cameras are for old people, who don't mind taking a photo, copying it to their computer then storing it in a folder to never look at it again. I have billions of photos like that. Young adults want something they can stick online immediately.

  • New, you have to spend ~ $1000 for a camera that is visually better than a modern camera phone …

You are looking for a camera with a 1inch sensor, something like a Sony RX100 …

    • Yeah these Sony rx100 are great. I have their third and it's still going well.
Their latest one costs over $1300 now :).

    • Modern phones are nuts. You can take photos that would be good enough source material to make a print ad with, or a video ad. How long before a movie shot on a phone wins an Oscar for best picture…

      • Modern phone software doing all the hard work, once its created, not enough data to manipulate it. Movie camera you got the high res image you can work with after the production.

10y old RX100 or A6000 can generate better image than moden cameras but that be still more than $200 second hand plus lenses.

      • It's conditional … viewing a smartphone image/video on a smartphone screen it looks awesome …

Viewing a smartphone image/video at 4x, you can see all the artifacts and detail loss from all the software processing!
(yes, it still applies to Pixel 8 Pro and and iPhone 15 Pro Max - I have both and they have their uses, but "detail" is not one of them) …

  • Fuji XE3 great cameras, I have 3 but not for sale!!. As a retired pro photographer, I love these cameras for travel and are my go to - the Hasselblads are retired also!!.

    • Thanks

  • Go for a second hand mirrorless. They are compact and will give plenty of options to add specialised lenses depending on where their interest takes them.
Stick with well known that support lots of options eg Canon, Nikon, Fuji.

    • Yeah good idea. Vlogging ones it good as they fit for purpose as well. I'll research these and see which one is affordable for teens

  • Best camera is the one you have with you… but being a younger user they may rate an Olympus TG-series Tough camera (waterproof, microscope mode) or maybe an action camera (Gopro). Mirrorless vlogging camera would be worth a look but they're way over budget.

    • Thanks. I'll look into those. Didn't consider it

      • I pack my TG-4 for underwater shots in salt water and places like the Blue Lagoon in Iceland - anywhere I'd rather not take my phone.
