Best Value Electricity Provider in SA?

Hi, I was with Simply Energy, and had an RAA discount, and it was decent. But they turned into ENGIE, and now I'm getting charged about 80c per kwh. My last bill was $1600 for the quarter.
So I want to go with someone better.

I was looking at the government's comparison site, and apparently GloBird Energy is the cheapest. However I looked at their posts on Facebook, and the comments are filled with people going on about how crap they are, and that they're a ripoff. I know there's always gonna be negative people in comments, but it just seemed off the charts.
But they only charge 35c! That's less than half I'm paying now. Maybe interstate people have it good, and that's considered expensive over there haha.

But my other options in a similar range are Pacific Blue, Kogan Energy, Powershop, and Amber.

Any suggestions or advice? Thanks!

I'd just go the cheapest it is all the same electrons.

Embrace the churn, look for the best deal every year.

    • thanks!

And no penalty to pull out early if not satisfactory

I'm with Globird in SA at the moment, I have been with them 2 or 3 times prior. I joined at $0.304/kw about 5 months ago and surprisingly no rate hike yet. Previously they hiked the rate pretty quickly and I churned elsewhere. Just go to wherever is cheapest, or where the signup bonus is then churn elsewhere when the rates go up or the bonus cets credited. Most companies have bad service and reviews, apart from maybe Origin Energy.

You can upload self meter reads with Globird as well to get an accurate bill between actual reads.

  • Oh, if it helps, I'm more of an evening user. I'm either asleep or at work until the afternoon. Usually using my computers overnight.

  • Check out RAA Energy, coming soon.

RAA can spin it as much as they want but I bet they won't be cheap. None of their other services are.

      • I think their Road Services are fair value.

        You want cheap, look elsewhere.

Quality and fair priced is what I want.

        I'd certainly look though.

Enormous market clout and they would be a big fish for Engie/AGL Energy Aust, Origin and others.
What the flow through benefit might be is unknown.
I think because they are trusted lots will at least look.

Plus they can cross sell Solar Installs and Battery from RAA Solar.

        • I think their Road Services are fair value.

One that comes with your insurance as an add-on is fine and is still cheaper than their standard pricing.

        • Quality doesn't really matter when it comes to power, it's all SA Networks providing it.

They're also nowhere near a "big fish". AGL, Origin and Engie all own substantial generation assets in SA and in terms of revenue, AGL is the smallest with $14b last year. RAA owns no physical power assets and has $800m in revenue a year (not to mention their last two reported years they had financial losses).

They're trying to dig themselves out of a hole and being able to run a dual call centre (insurance and power) is probably where it's at for them. Good ol' synergies.

  • My last bill was $1600 for the quarter.

Freakin' hell. Do you run an alumina refinery or something?

  • 80 cents a KwH is highway robbery!! No where in the world is electricity this expensive. SA is the worst for electricity rates and has been for some time, which is strange considering that state has one of the highest level of solar uptake..

    • highest level of solar uptake

Remember we bought a battery farm from Elon, that cost money :)

      • I really shouldn't have to Pedal a Bike to power my Laptop to get my OzB fix. lol

  • 80c per kwh seriously? My last bill was $343.65/64 days with Alinta (have Solar).

  • Kogan, even though the price comparison sites don’t have their upto date charges (so they appear more expensive), I recently moved away from Kogan because of their solar feed in tariffs being far too low.

If I hadn’t gone to solar then I would probably still be a Kogan customer, their rates are good and unlike power shop they didn’t stop all the good deals after 12 months of being their customer, rates stayed ‘reasonable’ compared to others.

With the rates, I found that the rates I was paying (in the Kogan app) were much lower than the price comparison website displayed.

  • I was with Alinta for years but now just changed to GloBird Energy GloSave which has no ccard fees as well. I use 8,000KWH pa. and would have saved $240 on my last bill of $1300 if I had been with GloBird instead of Alinta, including 3%POT discount available for DD.

GloBird rates incl GST are: Daily $1.24839, Peak $0.41186, Off Peak and Shoulder $0.23687. No contract term and leave any time if you find better deal. I don't have solar and most usage is Peak times.

Referrer bonus $50 for me and new customers if I refer anyone.

Alinta was Daily $1.0417, Peak $0.53493, OffP $0.29810 and Shoulder $0.24530.

  • Unfortunately it is no simple task to compare energy providers. There's just too many variables. You have to compare daily supply charge, rates (subdivided into various brackets), controlled load pricing, discounts, etc.

I'm with Diamond Energy and have found them to be good to deal with. They have just reduced rates as of 1st of July (now 46 c/kWh. Last bill was $470 for 90 days. Half of our usage was for hot water on controlled load (23 c/kWh).

    Might be worth a look.

    • You need to invest in a heat pump hot water system.

  • Time to move states, or get 4 batteries.

  • That’s nuts I’m with Engie and it ranges between 27c to 35c, 6c feed in and 87c per day supply, for my last bill in SA. Something isn’t quite right with your plan!

    • If you have a Smart Meter for Electricity you can't get single rate tariffs, only time of usage plans. I don't have solar so not comparable to your plan. The comparisons for GloBird and Engie Saver Elect are : GB Daily 1.24839c, Peak 0,41186c, Off Peak and Shoulder 0.23687c: Engie 1.2146c, Peak 54.14c, OffPeak 35.54c, Shoulder 21.92c. As most of my use is Peak, its pretty clear which apples for apples plan is cheaper? Rates can vary depending on postcode.

      • I’ve got a smart meter, but it’s not time of use plan. No controlled load either, it’s a heat pump. I haven’t changed plans in about 17 years, and on top of the above I get a 6% discount for paying before the due date…

The pricing is tiered like the water bill, eg first 280 kWh @ 27c and every time I’ve compared plans I can’t find a cheaper option.

I’m not sure about being forced onto a time of use plan, https://www.solarquotes.com.au/blog/sa-tou-tariff-solar/ but maybe they have started for new connections or something.

https://www.energymining.sa.gov.au/consumers/energy-contract… says it’s up to the retailer.

        • Solar plans are quite different pricing from what I can see. I don't have solar so can't compare solar to non-solar. Several places have told me I can't get fixed rate tariffs as I have a Smart meter.

  • Origin family and friends for me, from memory pretty close to cheapest rates but had a cash back bonus.

    • If you have a Smart Meter for Electricity you can't get single rate tariffs, only time of usage plans. I don't have solar. The comparisons for Origin Go Variable Elect 12 month contract are : GB Daily 1.24839c, Peak 0,41186c, Off Peak and Shoulder 0.23687c. Origin D 96.72c, Peak 50.24c, OffP 29.36, Sh 24.52c.As most of my use is Peak, its pretty clear which plan is cheaper? Rates can vary depending on postcode.
