I prefer Mafia 1 over GTA games

    • +2

o yes its a good series.

1 and 2 are fantastic. 3 is ok.

      Well worth the price.

Playing it now. It's like a movie with action scenes and you just moving through the world to move the plot forward. I'm loving the car mechanics (poor as it's 1930).

The voice acting is both really good and cartoonishly amusing. But what I really love is just looking around. Architecture, the squalor, and the car variety and locations. Really, really well done and fun.

I played a bit of Mafia 1 the other day when it came to Gamepass. Upset that the music has changed since the original. Back in the day it was so immersive.

The original soundtrack was underpinned by Reinhardt and Grappelli; and featured Minor Swing so prominently. It felt like the song had reached through time to be 'for' the game. The failure to license it for the remake was a big mis-step, and one wonders if there was an issue with the estate, or if someone was trying to save a buck. Either way it's a crying shame.

    • Not sure about the remaster, but you could copy the original soundtrack back into the original game after it was removed

Just played 1 and 2, just started 3. Really enjoy them all. Great storyline and voice acting, fun action sequences. You can also just drive around and shoot up stuff like GTA, although the cops are not as aggressive so easier to lose. There are quite a lot of cut scenes, particularly in 3, so they may not be for you if you just want non stop action, but to me it all adds to the experience and immersion.

Note that 1 was completely remastered with a modern graphics engine, new voice actors and cut scenes, so even though it's ~20 years old it feels fresh. Not quite up to 2024 standards but good enough.

    Highly recommended at this price.

The soundtrack in Mafia 3 is excellent.

  • +1

The original soundtrack was one of the greatest (and one of the first to integrate a lot of classic tunes, before fallout/bioshock) as well. Really got into Django Reinhardt from that

  • Playing through Mafia II 'definitive' edition right now - not a remaster from the ground up, for this one they just slapped some HD textures over the top

Still an all-time favourite game of mine though

Too bad they don't have the Steam bundle discount for already owned components.

    • +4

Yeah noticed this too, as I already own Mafia III Definitive. Will be a pass from me at this stage.

  • I absolutely loved Mafia. I haven't played 2 and 3 yet though…

    • +1

Mafia II is definitely worth a go

Good value I bought this a few weeks ago for a similar price and am still playing the first one. Over 300 collectibles which is insane.

    • huh? 24.99

  • Was playing Mafia 2 last night - Mafia 1 I hear is decent, Mafia 2 is amazing and Mafia 3 was alright but Mafia 2 was easily the best and worth it just for that to be honest.

    • +3

Mafia 2 was exceptional when it came out, and held up very strongly for years after. I'm a little surprised it "needed" a remaster.

      • +1

I'm a little surprised it "needed" a remaster.

It really didn't, which is why all they really did was slap some HD textures over the top of the majority of the game and called it there. They didn't fix a bunch of bugs though and they even introduced new ones (specifically with eyes)

Unlike Mafia 1 where they completely remade the game from the ground up.

        • +1

          Yep, pretty much this.

I'm glad that they did it. Since it was a free upgrade - would have been very mad if they'd made it a seperate game.

Of note - if you've got older hardware the older one runs better and doesn't really look bad at all.
