Slow Wi-Fi Speeds in House

Hey everyone, I'm experiencing some really slow Wi-Fi lately, and I'm wondering if it might be related to the setup I have.

I currently have 6 Wi-Fi-enabled cameras streaming in 1080p. My internet connection is 250 Mbps, so I assumed it would be more than enough, but my Wi-Fi speed is terrible. Could the cameras be hogging too much bandwidth? If so, what are some effective ways to speed things up?

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

  • Disconnect all your WIFIs and other gadgets connected then run SPEEDTEST. Then connect one by one, and repeat.

  • The speed test still shows 220 mbps. Its just my cameras take too long to load on the wifi. and sometimes, don't load at all. I guess the connection between cameras and router might be dropping?

    • 220 for 250 is pretty good.

  • Are the cameras new? If so, then it might be - see if the cameras have a low bandwidth mode. If not, it might be wifi interference from your neighbours. Try changing the wifi channel on your router.

    • Yes, fairly new. Thanks for the wifi channel suggestion. How can I find which channel to switch to?

      • Your router might have a scanner, but if it doesn't, then switch to another random one, maybe at a low channel number like 1 or the highest one that the router lets you.

        • Here is my channel graph. The circles yellow ones are my router and my wifi repeater

          • @mkh1991: Maybe select a lower channel number. I
There currently is a similar strength signal in the same band.

You also mentioned wifi repeater, I presume it is not mesh? Try switching the repeater off and try. If it improves, looks at getting a proper mesh wifi units instead of repeater

  • If your cameras are using all the upload bandwidth (not much) it could be an issue.

  • The wifi cameras might be slow if they are too far away from the wifi, they should also be connected on a 802.11n network for distance not a 802.11ac.

The cloud provider for the cameras might be slow leading to latency and a slower connection as well

  • Reading through the post and comments, have a few queries or clarifications which could help identify the issue.

    • Assume your camera's are streaming to the cloud and not a local base? If thats the case, then your internets upload speed could be the issue. If it is a local base, it's a Wifi only issue.
    • What Wifi router are you using? And also noticed your wifi is on 2.4Ghz (based on your channel graph). It might be possible you're saturating your wifi connection and not your internet speed. Depending on the router, you might need to upgrade to handle 6 cameras constantly streaming + whatever other devices you have in your house.
    • Signal strength could also vary depending on the construction of your house. The camera signal will struggle to get to your router / booster if it has to go through brick / block work walls and the like. Did you try activating and testing the camera's all in the same room before mounting them?

Context: Also happened to have 5-6 wifi cameras set up at my place. But I run a Mesh network if that makes any difference.
