Disassembling 4 Tier Plastic Drawers

I'm looking to remove the top and feet of one of these: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/22732/115120/4_tier_pl…

So that I can attach it to another so I have an 8 tier drawer. I got them in assembled form, but they come with unassembled frame and the drawers. I don't have the instructions and the Kmart (not exactly the same but would be similar) pdf instructions are too small and don't show the contact points.

I want to avoid breaking the plastic connectors, so if I know where the clips, etc. are, that would be very handy. Does anyone have a set uninstalled and can upload a detailed picture or the instructions.

PS: I don't want to stack them because the fit is loose.

    Are you serious?

    • You're just jealous you didn't think of posting this first.

      • Does it show?

    • Nah, I want to set the record for the most dumb forum posts.

      • You've got a ways to go if you want to beat the guy who wanted to know if he could sit a metre away from a 75" TV.

I had something similar. They just pull apart, no screws, no bolts, no tabs.
From the top, grab the 'lid' with one hand and one 'leg' with the other and just pull it apart one corner at a time.
    Repeat for each level.

    • I tried sliding a razor into the hole in the "lid" around a leg. It goes in deep all round except on the inside of the leg where there are "lattices". Are you sure there's no tab in the "lid" on the inside?

  • I put one of these together without looking at the manual the other day. No tools are needed, just pull.

    • Putting together is easy.

I don't want to pull too hard and break the clips/tabs, if there are any.

  • You could go the other way if you don't want to cut it or pull it apart.

For this type of product, it does look like a case of just pulling it. I don't think you'd find specific instructions for such a product online. You could go in store and have a look at how the clip looks on a similar product and work out your chances of breaking it.

Took some photos of the lid for ya

    • Brilliant, thanks mate. Appreciate it.

    • Cheers, got the lid off. (I wonder how many times the tab will take the lid being pulled off - big sheer force on the tab!)

Does yours have wheels or feet? If feet, have you ever gotten these off? They are flat and there is no grip and might have to pry with screw driver.

      • Mine are on wheels but I did not install them. There is just the one tab on those too.

        • What did you grab to pull them out?

          • @ihbh: I never installed the wheels but I would try to pry the leg away from the hole in the wheel.

  • Don't bother risking permanent damage.

Just get some glue and glue the bottom of one stack of four to the top of the other stack of four.

    • Next time I'm leaving it alone… because when I start with something, I persist and persist.

  • If youncant work it out with the thing in front of you should you really be attempting it?

We have really lost the art of fixing stuff.

    • Got both the top off (easy, I just wanted to make sure I didn't break any tabs) and flat feet off (f**king hard as hell).

We have really lost the art of fixing stuff.

It feels good, but the rational side of me thinks it would have been cheaper to buy everything new and not have to go through this hell. But the feeling of pride and near bloody hands is priceless.

      • Its not better to buy new when you have a functional item even if it requires a little maintenance. Learning to fix rather than replace with save a fortune - not to mention the environmental benefits

        • Yep, and I bought five drawers for $15 and got the other four for free, all second hand.

I try to be as sustainable as possible and didn't want to break any tabs and have to recycle one of them.

  • Don't try to remove the feet at home boys and girls.

Took what seemed like hours and two thin metal rods to pry the horizontal piece locked by the tab over the tab, and two screwdrivers to lever it out. But I got there and no tabs broken. Would have been handy if I was an octopus.
