Private Internet Access VPN: 98% Cashback (New Customers Only) @ Cashrewards

120

Not used these guys before, if anyone has any feedback, especially out of Perth, please share.

NOTE:
Cashback says FROM $2.19pm + 2 free. PIA shows $2.89pm.
Order Summary shows, $415.74 - 82% discount ($340.60) = $75.14
75.14 /24 = 3.13, /26mths = $2.89
Weird? But still "seems" like good val, if any good.

I have been using PIA from Melbourne. Works well.

    • +1

Been with them for years, been steady. Also using the Melbourne endpoint even though I'm from Sydney.

Desktop client has cli commands for you to interact with the VPN status (if needed)

Most annoying part is getting captcha'd on Google searches.

No comment on videos, I don't stream

      • +1

"Most annoying part is getting captcha'd"

I noticed they have dedicated IP for an extra $84 for the 2yrs ($3.50pm), 50% discount. Which is much cheaper vs dedicated from ISP.
Watching YTs it appears captcha is one thing it's good at avoiding, vs 100s of hits from the same address.

    • I had this, it was garbage. Support was good, but speeds were rubbish

  • +2

Does not work for kayo when overseas, needed to use express vpn.

I use PIA. App is simple and quick to connect on desktop, Apple TV and mobile. I prefer it vs PureVPN.

    • Just tried using pure, there is something very clunky about it. Abandoned

      • yeah it's super buggy on all platforms for me.

Used PIA for years then got a good deal on Windscribe. Only regrets. Considering just writing that off and signing back up to PIA again through this deal.

    • Lots of YT research, Chris Titus tier list had Openvpn & Windscribe as best, with products like PIA & Nord as corporate garbage. Whilst others had it the other way around, who also promoted their affiliate links.

So unless from a forum discussion, like this, it's hard to know what to believe, trust.

      • Are they aussie? I’ve had nothing but problems with windscribe on my ios device with pages not loading on multiple sites.

        • Not the youtubers, Aussie's are rare vs Americans (& Indians).

Pages loading was an issue I hated about Nord, but researching, perhaps it's due to not having a dedicated IP, vs 100s of hits from the same address.

  • So this is 98% cash back on $75.14 AUD right?

If so, yes, I'm in (again). Bought this back in 2022 for $75.14 AUD with 96% ($69.68 AUD tracked) cash back and it has been very handy and I'm up for renewal

    • Looking for confirmation on this as well.

      • No Idea (yet), I asked the same Q in the last Nord deal, "apparently" it's what you pay ($75.14) not incl any os transaction/conversions. Which if applicable here would only be less than a few $s.
The order screen I'm looking at doesn't show or suggest any taxes, which is kinda odd.

    • Just got my tracking receipt - AUD$71.01

      Says tracked amount was USD$49.83

      • Interesting. I've only used CB for Au purchases, guess the $71.01 (vs my $75.14) is the correct exchange rate at purchase time. Actual purchase price is the tracked.
        Thanks for sharing

    • +1

Yes, that is correct. You need to sign up to cash rewards, buy the product through the deal and then you'll get the $75 back after some time, maybe 30 days. I've done it twice with Nord and there were no catches besides the delays. I pulled the cash back out and put it on my paypal account but you can transfer it to a bank account. I guess the other catch is you need to initiate the transfer so if you forget you lose the money

PIA used to be the VPN to use. Then in 2019 they were acquired by Kape Technologies who had a less than stellar reputation, and many, many people moved away from them. I haven't used them since 2020 so can't comment on their recent performance, but I did use them from 2013-2020, and they were great. Prime advantage over many of the others is that they allow inbound port forwarding.

Price if you access their website from the US is US$2.19, so I'm guessing the price difference is just a mistake on the part of cashrewards.

  • I thought ozb love Nord now after the business with Pia above

  • Is refund easy? looking to try out their openvpn servers

  • how long does the tracking usually take to come through? just purchased but no email from cashrewards to say it's been tracked yet (usually instant for me with other places)

    • Get it? (if not maybe junk/spam folder) What were your total$?

      • +1

oh yes! it just came after about 45 or some minutes. AUD 71.01 was the amount of cashback.

    • Took about around an hour for my tracking to come through.

  • As mentioned higher up, using Google when connected is a nightmare. It asks for CAPTCHA every single time and not only that, but it never works, so you sit there clicking on cars, motorbikes and stairs like 15 times until it finally lets you through. I contacted PIA about this and their best solution was to not use Google, which I find to be unacceptable, and at the same time I changed my default search engine to DuckDuckGo, but it’s just not the same.

    • +1

add '!s' to your searches on duckduckgo to get startpage results, which are supposed to be the same as google results

      • Please explain a bit more with a url if possible. This sounds quite a nifty trick

        • Just add what i wrote, separated with a space

      • Thanks for that! I'll give this a crack

  • Would they give Cashback for;

    Static IP

PIA does not offer free static IP addresses. To obtain a static IP, you'll typically need to subscribe to a specific plan or add-on, which comes with an additional cost.

    • +1

From my post above - Dedicated IP is extra $84 for the 2yrs ($3.50pm), 50% discount.
Cashback is for vpn, doubt it will include extras

    • +3

I bought their dedicated IP, not worth it in my opinion, I was expecting to get all the ports passed through.
But it's the same as a regular connection, you just get the same one every time.
I wouldn't pay for it again.

  • +2

Run your own VPNwith dedicated static IP.

    • After 40+ years of W I'm finally jumping to Linux (Cachyos), through all the research I got side tracked onto this.

What's ur setup, use as a host, VPN Book, renting VPS?

      • +1

Looked around at a VPS and found an affordable one run by Mammoth Cloud.

Chose Ubuntu Server as I'm have used Linux Mint. Makes it easier to use something that you are familiar with.

Was quite surprised how easy it was to spin-up a WireGuard instance. Thought it might take me a few days to get it up and running. 🙂

One thing you must be mindful when running your own VPS is to setup access via secure VPN and not direct access via say an open port.

Mammoth Cloud also comes with a nice and easy to use Firewall tool. Great for newbies.

Plenty of tutes online to guide you through the process.

        • +1

Looks like Mammoth cheapest option is $25pm? Only in Sydney?
Be worth it for a small work enviro/server, not home use vs package point & click for ~$6pm (with dedicated IP).

Prior to Chachy on Gaming rig, I ran Mint on an old lappy to check it out, very easy & familiar for W users vs a few years ago when I researched. More point & click vs commodore 64 terminal days. Granny would barely know the difference.

For others considering switch, PoPos (also Ubuntu fork) is getting good traction for gamers, but Arch (Chachy like others a fork of it), a bit more challenging, but gets updates more often.

          • +1

@linoc66: Mammoth have nice price VPS at Binarylane.

I'm happy its an Aussie based service and pay in AUD.

    • +2

This method is only good for keeping yourself hidden.

It's no good for when you want to make it look like you're in another country though is it? As in getting cheaper services via Turkey, Argentina etc etc….

  • Good timing. Just finished my 3 year subscription last week. Bought another 2 years.
PIA is easy to use for Windows / Mac / iOS / Android.
I like how easy it is to setup compared to other VPNs

  • There is 95% off on purevpn at cr too if someone wants to post it

  • And nord is at 98% off on shopback for anyone interested to get and post it too

    • Seen the purevpn deal, couldn't find much positive reviews about it.
Also seen the Nord deal, shopback appears a bit dodgy, you used them?

  • Does anyone know if this works via Wireguard? ie not using their client software.

    • +1

Android software has Wireguard but I haven't seen any documentation. You could try contacting support.

      Edit: found this- https://github.com/pia-foss/manual-connections

    • +2

It has Wireguard in their windows app, I use it, I know that the binhex torrent client + VPN docker containers can also use Wireguard so I know it's possible, tried setting it up to use on Wireguard android app but didn't get very far but also, didn't try very hard.

Unrelated, +1 for all mentions of, "I hope you like filling out captchas", but also, +1 for www.startpage.com which is now my default search engine.

  • I was with PIA
Do you how long is the waiting time before I will be regarded as a new customer?
    thank you.
