F1 fans disenfranchised by Mercedes dominance, Vettel's collapse in the 2017 and 2018 seasons may have missed Adrian Newey's autobiography like me. So just checking to buy the hardcover, noticed the ebook is free (edit) TO BORROW (/edit) with Amazon Prime.

Description: How to Build a Car explores the story of Adrian’s unrivalled 35-year career in Formula One through the prism of the cars he has designed, the drivers he has worked alongside and the races in which he’s been involved.

A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrian’s thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form – he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays. From his early career in IndyCar racing and on to his unparalleled success in Formula One, we learn in comprehensive, engaging and highly entertaining detail how a car actually works. Adrian has designed for the likes of Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, always with a shark-like purity of purpose: to make the car go faster. And while his career has been marked by unbelievable triumphs, there have also been deep tragedies; most notably Ayrton Senna’s death during his time at Williams in 1994.

Beautifully illustrated with never-before-seen drawings, How to Build a Car encapsulates, through Adrian’s remarkable life story, precisely what makes Formula One so thrilling – its potential for the total synchronicity of man and machine, the perfect combination of style, efficiency and speed.

It's not free to purchase, seems it's only free to borrow.

    • Ah, good catch. It said it would be available once downloaded. Didn't realise it is a borrow. Will update.

      U having a loan m8?

  • I guess he made enough money - about $35 million per year according to the BBC - building cars that when it came to a vanity project like writing a book about how well he did it doesn't need to make him more money still.

  • Where is the option to borrow? And what does borrowing mean here?

    • I think it's the $0 Kindle option. I don't actually know what borrow means either even though I did it in April this year. I still have access to the book. Maybe you can read it while you maintain Prime (which I did since then)?

In How to Build a Car, Adrian Newey, one of Formula 1's most successful race car designers, shares the story of his remarkable life and career.

Newey details his childhood fascination with building things and motorsports, particularly his father's influence. He recounts his early efforts in karting and building model cars, highlighting the genesis of his approach to design and engineering. The book then delves into his early career, starting with his time at Fittipaldi Automotive, where he designed his first Formula One car.

Newey offers a fascinating look behind the scenes of the world of Formula 1, with anecdotes about drivers, engineers, and team principals. He explains complex technical concepts in a clear and understandable way, making the book accessible to both hardcore F1 fans and casual readers alike.

Central to the narrative is Newey's time at Williams and McLaren, where he achieved multiple championship wins with cars known for their aerodynamic brilliance. He recounts triumphs and disappointments, including the tragic death of Ayrton Senna, which he acknowledges was partly due to a design flaw in the car.

The book concludes with Newey's move to Red Bull Racing, where he helped the team achieve four consecutive drivers' and constructors' championships from 2010 to 2013.

Throughout How to Build a Car, Newey emphasizes the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and a passion for pushing boundaries in the quest for racing excellence. He also shares his personal journey, including his love for classic cars and motorbikes, and reflections on the highs and lows of his personal life. Ultimately, the book is a testament to Newey's exceptional talent and dedication to his craft, and a fascinating insight into the world of Formula 1.

Book can only be borrowed by team Aston Martin for 2025 onwards. 😂

  • Decent read.

  • Op I have prime. But no matter what I click, it asks for payment. Either the book or for kindle.

  • Borrowing is exactly how F1 teams are meant to advance their designs from what I've read!
