Google Devices Stopped Casting and Can’t Use Spotify, YouTube

Hi everyone! I use a google nest and google speaker for streaming music, or at least I did until recently.

It was around the time of the crowdstrike debacle (maybe related?) but my google devices won’t cast music (it plays the connected chime then immediately after plays the disconnect chime) I can’t verbally prompt it, it says yes then it says something went wrong. I’ve tried unplugging and plugging in again. I’ve tried deleting them from the google home app, creating a new home and adding them. Removing Spotify then readding it. Same problem with YouTube and Soundcloud. I’ve removed all restrictions from our router (we have to prevent the kids from getting onto bad things online). Nothing has fixed it.

I can’t find anyone with the same problem online and I can’t see anything else to try. I’m about to throw in the towel and go and buy a Sonos but before I do, anyone have a solution? Please, I’m a desperate as I sound!

  • Adding - it seems to affect google hub and google nest but not the prism tv which further adds to my confusion.

Try remove it from your Google home list and re-add it back to the app.

    • OP already mentioned in the post he tried this

    • I think I had the same issue once a few years ago.
I use my phone to cast.
I think I updated the Google Home app and it's fixed.

Try the following one after another and see which one works:
      - restart your router
      - uninstall and reinstall the Home app
      - use your phone to cast instead of the Nest tablet and see if you have the same issue.
      - Sometimes it's just a bug or error after the speaker updates its firmware. Try factory reset it.

I am still using the same and my very first Google home mini.

      • I’ll give that a go, thank you

Also before jumping to Sonos read some of the recent 'developments' over there with their latest total garbage update that screwed a lot of their customers (me included).

No issues with similar setup here.
Assume no DNS blocking or forced redirections - no VPN etc..

    • Yeah I was going to suggest OP think if they've made any other changes recently - network hardware/configuration, changed ISPs, etc.

  • Would this at all be related to the discontinuation of Chromecasts?

  • make sure they are on the same wireless network. I have split 2.4 and 5g networks and find they don't work if i connect to a different ssid even on the same network

    • :O if I was a betting person, I’d put my dollars on this brb

      • Please keep us posted if you manage to find a solution - I also have had the same issue for quite some time now.

        • Honestly my solution is about to be putting my google devices in hard rubbish and using my tax return to good use. It’s driving me crazy.

      • If I was a better person I would have lost. They’re all on the same network.

    • False.
My Google home mini connects to 2.4G and my phone connects to 5G. Works perfectly.
      Different SSID, same router.

      Not true.
Have IoT devices (goggles etc) in seperate VLAN and Wifi SSID.
Devices allowed to access them from other networks (VLANS & SSID's) operate/cast/stream/query etc them just fine.
mDNS is also enabled/working between various allowed segments.

      • mDNS is also enabled/working between various allowed segments

        This is why that works.
