Repair Scratches on My Car

Someone scratched the rear bumper of my car and ran away. here is a photo.

I've decided to repair it myself, and after watching some YouTube videos, I feel reasonably confident. However, I’d appreciate some advice before I dive in. Here’s the list of products I plan to use:

Base Paint: Custom paint mixed at Supercheap Auto.
Sandpaper:
Filler/Primer: Since the scratches aren’t too deep, I think this 2-in-1 should do the trick.
Clear Coat:

Am I using the right products? Any tips for handling this kind of project would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

    That'll buff right out!

In this case, it actually likely would!

  • You seem to have jumped straight to repainting. Most of that is deposited paint and will buff out. Start there.

  • As the others have said, I would start with buffing it out and going from there. Always go for the least aggressive method to start off with

  • thanks everyone for your replies. but sorry for my ignorance, what do you mean by buffing it out? I thought I would start with sandpaper.

  • Agree that most of it looks like paint amd marks from the other vehicle. Try buff and polish before you buy paint. You might find that it all polishes off leaving very little to actually paint.

Polish is effectivly a microfine sandpaper paste. It will cut back whatever is on the surface, hopefully withoit dmaaging your paint too much.

    • OK, I get it now. However, the paint in those black spots has definitely been scratched off, so I’m pretty sure I’ll need to repaint those areas. That said, I’ll definitely buff it first. Thanks for the advice!

I use Meguiar's Scratch-X but there are other similar products

      • Start with a claying rubber first and that'll pull a lot of the paint transfer off rather than it building up on your polishing pad.

    Try MEGUIAR'S SCRATCH-X

The paint on your car is 2 pack, not some supercheap acrylic. Supercheap will not count match that correctly, you will also not be able to blend it into the other panels. Repairing the scratches is not as easy as it seems. Painting is far harder than it seems.

    • so you suggest I should use a professional instead?

      • Yes, unless you want to waste time and money, and end up with a crap result. What car is it? Late-ish model Camry?

        • Yeah, good point, but I expect it will cost at least 1k, it's a Nissan altima 2016. not very new. or I may claim insurance, but it will affect my rating I guess. hard to decide.

          • @Albert10: Yes it would cost at least $1k. Up to you I suppose.

if all the damage is on bumper alone, I would get a secondhand bumper
    .

This, don't waste on MEGUIAR'S SCRATCH-X, it looks beyond buffable.
or if you paint it incorrectly, the paint will eventually peel off.

    • Second hand altoma bumpers wont be as readily avaiable as many other models.

  • What about a hadouken instead?

  • A roll of silver racing tape will fix it.

  • you don't need all that stuff, it'll come right out with the tap of a hammer

  • Or just contact insurance and get them to fix it all up for you.

    • yeah, thought about it. since I don't have the third-party's details, I will have to pay for the excess ($800) plus downgrading my rating. So, I don't think it's worth it.

You can get rid of the other vehicle's paint with nail polish remover (seriously). Looking at the photo, I dare say it will remove most of that.

I did it on my car about 18 months ago; there were virtually no marks left.

I understand if you're reluctant to believe a random on the internet. Try a small amount of nail polish remover on a small area as a test. If you're happy with the results, proceed from there.
