Best Crash Course in 3D Printing?

Hi, I just purchased a Flashforge Adventure 5.

I’ve never owned or used a 3D printer. I have basic questions like what filament is best for each use case, why are there multiple nozzles sizes and when do I need them, how do I take STL and print it (slicing software etc).

I’ve looked up a few YouTubes but I feel most seem to assume some prior knowledge. Can anyone suggest a resources or video/series that they found useful?

Thank you.

    Google it ?

    e.g.: https://www.google.com/search?q=best+filiment+for+Flashforge…

By the way OP, what made you buy a Flashforge Adventure 5 from all the other brands and models?

I was considering an A1 then these popped up on special cheaper and enclosed. Read a bunch of reviews on PETG and some ABS in the Flashforge. Seemed pretty good for the price ($400) but only looked for a few days. So many options!
Main use case is printing brackets, enclosures and other things for pc and electronic projects.

      • Probably shoulda gone with the A1 for the best newbie experience imo. BambuLab printers are just way more user friendly.

        • Swings and roundabouts. OP might not stay a newbie- he already knows enough to decide on an enclosed printer for ABS computer parts.

          • @rumblytangara: This was my thought. I honestly couldn’t see much difference in ease of use between Bambu and Flashforge. I figured there will be a curve regardless and as I intend on ABS (or something similarly strong) I’ll need an enclosure which was $50 more.

The Bambu however does seem to have more users which gives me more confidence of spares in years to come. I’ll have to see how the flash forge lasts in this regard.

            • @Low Punt: Flashforge has been around for a long time.

I'm not sure how proprietary the parts are, but you can often get third party parts from Aliexpress for various printers.

Filaments: PLA is easiest to work with. PETG is next one up that's a bit tougher.

Use the one nozzle 0.4mm. Worry about different nozzles later (smaller = finer detail but slower prints and easier to clog)
    Sites to download STL's from: https://www.printables.com https://www.thingiverse.com/ https://thangs.com/

As for the slicing software, follow the instructions with the printer. I normally used Prusa Slicer, but Cura is fine too.

Then when you get sick of the Flashforge sucking, buy a Bambu Printer :P (I just upgraded from 2xEnder 3's to a Bambu and I want to yeet my Ender 3's into the bin now)

Also for other info on 3D Printing: https://all3dp.com has some fun info. Just follow the instructions with your printer first to get started.

    • Adventurer 5M is comparable to a P1P.

  • Avoid Kingroon.

Siddament is good, and for one offs, Amazon have CC3D

If printing with ABS, ensure you are venting the fumes away from yourself and anybody else as they are toxic. PLA far less so.

    • Cheers. This was a concern. I’m overly cautious so will vent for all printing.

      Same with Resin type Printers.

      • The health concerns of ABS vs resin are magnitudes of difference apart.

  • The enclosure is sold separately for the 5M, not needed for PLA or PETG

Welcome to the wonders of 3dprinting
Join a group for your brand of printer it will be priceless having access to others using your printer … Trust me 🤓

    • I found a FB group but don’t use FB so will need to look into that. Haven’t gone as far as looking for a forum etc for printing.
