Optus Modem Bricked - Move SIM Card to TP-Link Modem?

So, I just want to put my Optus sim into a new modem I bought from Officeworks (TP-Link AC750 Archer MR200).

I've changed the SSID name and password on the TP-Link to mirror the Optus supplied wifi modem (Ultra wifi 5g) that is bricked so my devices just connect without having to individually relinking them to my wifi network.

I get a message from Optus that the SIM is not for other devices and is locked to the modem.

I want to maintain the current Optus wireless broadband plan (36 months), and just use another modem. How can I unlock the Optus modem and get on with my life (online)?

Sending the Optus modem back is going to take too long and I can't be bothered dealing with them any longer. Their technical phone support is useless.

  • the SIM is not for other devices and is locked to the modem.

    • Correct, but why ? I’m not leaving Optus or cancelling the plan, I just want the option to use my own modem.

      • Because forcing you to use their modem means they can restrict you to the 5G band(s) that they want your data traffic to use. They don't have that control if you use a third-party modem. One data user uses the amount of bandwidth of a lot of phone callers, and can clog up the bands the phone company wants to keep free for phone callers. When the local tower is congested they want your data traffic to run a bit slower, not for a whole lot of other customers to not be able to make phone calls.

Take the modem into an Optus store and see if they can swap it on the spot.

      Which spot?

    • Tried that this morning. Optus stores only SELL things and plans. They gave me the phone number to call for a replacement. This entails them sending me a satchel to return the modem in. Could take a week or more. Useless as ….

maybe you can put the optus modem in bridge mode and connect it to the tp-link router

    • I think this what I’ve since done this evening.
Turned the Optus modem wifi off and is connected to the internet which is now wired (bridged ?) into the TP-Link which is now acting as a wifi router to my devices. Happy days.

  • Tel$tra or Optu$ = deal with them if you can afford them, but when SHTF you discover how much money you have wasted, AND you are on a contract.

    Sad. :-(
