I paid over 300 for these brand new. They're phenomenal, plus they stay in my ears while running. Great price.

i find these bad for running
i can hear the pavement thumps while running. even on the boxing i hear thuds from shaking
i own samsung galaxy pro buds 2 and dont have any of these issues

      • +2

I had the same issue when I had the XM4's. I had to return them in the end. To Sony's credit, they gave me a full refund.

You can turn off ANC and that mostly fixes the thumping issue, but then what is the point of paying a premium for ANC earphones if you can't use the ANC?

      • +1

My XM4s do this just walking casually (I am disabled though, don't have a full range of motion on my left hand side to enable a fluid walking motion). I find ANC unnecessary technology though so I'm happy enough to have it off. I struggle to hear anything going on around me even with ANC turned off anyway.

  • I bought some of the silver ones as seconds a couple of weeks back.

Very happy with them! Surprised how much of an improvement they are over the WF-1000XM3 they replaced.

    • Improvement sound quality wise? Or other.

      • +2

Much improved noise cancellation for starters. Since I thought the XM3s weren't bad, I'm impressed with how much better these are.

The buds themselves are maybe 1/2 - 2/3 the size of the old ones, and the same goes for the case. Significantly smaller in your ears, visually.

They also seem to fit into a sweet spot in my ear a lot more easily (even though using the same Comply tips). Their shape makes putting them into my ears less hassle than on the XM3.

I would also say the sound quality has improved generally - though this is a lot harder to quantify, and I say that as a pro sound dude. I get a more solid sound stage with these. I think the bass is a bit more solid (though that could also be a better seal in my ears, or cleaner low-end ANC). They also seem a fair bit louder - I'm yet to take these to anywhere near 100% while listening to music.

        HTT!

Thanks for the detailed response. I always assume there will be some technological improvements on newer models but I only really care about sound quality at this price range. I asked because I lost my last xm3's on the bus and they're on ebay now box damaged but new for $150.

My pair was $120 refurbished with one bodgey battery in one earpiece I'd have to recharge sooner than the other. But the SQ was amazing and far exceeded my expectations. Also the apps preset equaliser settings did a good job of getting the best dynamic range out of them so I'm deciding to just get another or wait for another xm5 deal.

  • Is there any with damaged box .

    • +2

Yeah box damage far more desirable than refurb

  • Can anyone comment on the phone call quality of these? Especially compared with Airpods Pro 2nd Gen?

    • +1

I've heard they still haven't figured it out. I've tried so many ear buds and they are all abysmal when it comes to call quality. The only thing I've seen compete with the Airpods is the Voyager 5200, which I use religiously for meetings.

      • Voyager 5200, which I use religiously for meetings

How do you find having only one ear piece?

        • For meetings, phone calls, or talking in general, I've already preferred one ear piece. I'll switch to a set of ear buds for music.

          • @philotex: My work landline headset is single, but I rarely use it. I have used buds for so long in meetings, video or otherwise, that it seems odd to me for some reason. It really shouldn't I guess, more of a mental thing.

I do stupidly have the ANC on always, and can end up talking rather loud in the office when I am on a call/in a meeting.

You’ll find reviews on YouTube that give actual examples of how they sound in a call and compare to the AirPods etc.

Best to go listen so you can determine what you consider acceptable. I’ve not had anyone complain at any point with these, but that doesn’t mean they sound good.

    • +2

I have these. The call quality is pretty good, until the noise around you gets any louder than your own home. As soon as I step outside, especially if walking near a road, sitting in a cafe or at the gym, my voice apparently turns into an unintelligible robot. It's so bad that I had to stop using the headphones when on a call outside.
Other than that, they are fantastic.

But if you Google "Sony WF-1000XM5 robotic call quality" you'll find quite a lot of others complaining about the same issue for nearly a year now, with no update so far to fix it.

Try Soundpeats Air pro4 for phone calls

  • terrible stock foam ear tips that falls apart within 2 months of moderate use, is this the expected life span for foam ear tips or should i look into replacing it with silicone

    • I have had my refurb set since April, use them almost daily, including many hours outside on my mower, still looking 100% as per day 1.

    • Long time ago but I used to use foam tips about 15 years ago (Comply tips) and I found the lifespan of them was always a couple of months, even before they start to fall apart they just stop working as well they kind of become too spongey or something. They ended up being a consumable type thing I had to keep buying more every few months, so I gave up on them. When they were brand new they were always amazing though. I hope technology has improved since then but maybe not.

  • I have two bitch points about these buds:
The multi-point BT connection is hit and miss, frequently will not connect to phone and laptop. It will do one and not the other, and it's inconsistent.
The volume control is fickle with having the up and down on the same bud. I much preferred the 3s & 4s that had up on one bud, and down on the other.

    • FWIW I've found they seem to be able to connect to two things at once, but only stream audio from one source at a time. If you try to stream from a second device it just seems to fail from either PC or phone - for me at least!

      • It's only supposed to stream from one device at a time, and it will prioritise phone calls above all else.

Grabbed a pair. I loved my xm4s but the battery on them shit the bed with the botched firmware that killed them last year. Firmware patches didn't help, the battery was too cooked by then and now can't pair, and they only had 1yr warranty since they were also seconds.

I was unsatisfied enough with that experience to not buy another set of ANC in-ears. But at this price I think I'm willing to forgive and grab some xm5s, since I really do miss having the xm4s which were great headphones (when they were actually functioning). I'll just watch that 1yr warranty closely this time and hope they last…

  • Would you go for this or the galaxy buds 3 pro if you could get it for $200?

I do prefer the look of the Sony's but curious to see if anyone has tried both.

  • Are there any options comparable to these? I'd rather not buy Sony after they've shafted me on warranty a few times …

    • +1

Maybe Sennheiser Momentum Truely Wireless 4 but you’ll pay quite a bit more for them. This is an excellent price.

Shame they sold so quick. I’d prefer over the ear but they usually sell fast as well.

Read the reviews of best sound buds for 2024 and I’m sure these will be there.

      • Thanks. I'd rather keep an eye out for a decent deal on a high quality product than buy a product that may as well have zero warranty.

    • All depends on what your priorities are, sound quality, ANC quality, call quality etc…….. go watch some comparison youtube videos

  • I wonder if I can use this for meeting.. would people in the room able to hear my background noise if I use these buds? if yes, any good earbuds have these functions?

    • Yes. I use xm5s for work meetings over ms teams and they can still hear background noise. Unfortunately these don't replace a dedicated work headset.
