Roadworthy Certificate Provider in Melbourne

Hello everyone, me and my partner have recently gained a vehicle as my partner's brother unexpectedly passing away in SA.

The rego in SA is expiring at the end of the week and we will get a RWC and make the appointment with VicRoads to get the registration here. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for roadworthy/mechanics, we haven't had to use any in the past as we didn't have a vehicle. Not looking for a bargain basement, cutting corners, just someone honest, reliable and hopefully competitive pricewise.

The car is in good condition and he looked after it, a family friend in SA gave it a major service and changed the general things, hoses etc before it came to VIC. I'm not expecting it to have any issues (if it does then it does) but would like to find a mechanic who can do it for us and to use when we inevitably need in the future.

Location is Caulfield.

Thank you for your time and any recommendations.

Go and see Danny at https://www.villagegarage.com.au/ in Rippon Lea. I have known him as a mechanic since late 90s. Honest and nice guy.

Ask in your local facebook community group which local one most people recommend.

My tip is do the roadworthy at the closest place to your house. The cost of the roadworthy is not the real issue - these guys don't want to lose their certification and will almost always do a real assessment of the vehicle - it's the price for repairs that are needed to meet roadworthy requirements. Ask for a detailed quote on the work they say needs to be done, so you know what they want for parts, and exactly what the work is.

Say you need to organise some things first, then spend a few hours calling all the local mechanics with those details and see if it's a fair price. I saved ~$1500 on work required for two cars when we moved to NSW and had to get pink slips. The pink slip inspection mechanic was quoting $450ea on parts that are $150 for genuine Subaru. Stuck with the shop that did the work instead ever since.

Otherwise my tip is to go with the mechanic that has a dog in their shop. Never gone wrong with one like that.

    • Sound like you don't have a clue about NSW registration process and got scammed big time. It's blue slip and NSW is the most slack state in this respect, your car must be in real shitty condition to cost much to repair. In contrast, Vic's rwc is almost in the scam scheme and you must win a lotto if your vehicle got first pass at rwc (unless it is pretty much brand new car). All the car I've done rwc in Vic cost at least $7-800, one even failed because the rear seatbelt got white mould due to moisture (which can be cleaned with a simple wipe). Another had windscreen replaced because it got sandblasting which can only be seen under uv light (wtf?)
To give you perspective I got 2 cars done for rwc and blue slip, both cost at least $700 to fix on rwc. Both of those later pass blue slip first go 2 years later (including the one with new windscreen above but managed to collect 2 extra small chips that can be spotted easily whilst driving). And no, I'm not a friend of the mechanic in all those cases.

      • Uh, thanks for the mix of helpful information, personal anecdotes, and insults?

  • This bloke is in your area and very good.
