Cheapest Way to Pre Order The Pixel 9 Fold

There's a lot of different offers from various stores and differing comments on what the actual discounts are.

Happy to sign up (then cancel) for a new number on a plan if it's the cheapest way.

I also have an old unused pixel 7 pro I can trade in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'd wait a few weeks after launch, you'll save yourself far more based on all the previous Pixel launches and discounting that goes on.

This isn't always the case - afaik the Pixel 8 Pro never dropped below the HN/Optus cancellation deal.

      • +1

The standard Pixel 8 dropped to $749 outright during sales. The Pro has been down to $929. Both 128GB examples.
That is much cheaper than any cancellation cost, isn't it?

        • The Pro was ~$828 if you pre-ordered through HN then cancelled the contract, but they closed the loophole pretty quickly.

  • Ive chosen the Pro 9 XL 256gb for $1995 from JB
I traded in a cruddy old phone to get $1 credit and a $350 GC + another $350 GC from JB
$1700 Credit when going on a 24 month $99 plan

    $1995
    - $1700

    -$700

Left me a credit of $400

Pre Sold my old pixel pro 7 for $500 after 2 years of solid use

The plan is $2376 over 2 years
    -$900
=$61.50 per month for 300gb i can barely use :D

    • This is impressive! So you CAN do both the trade-in offer and the plan sign up for GC?

How cruddy a phone will they take? We have an Alcatel one lying around…

Contacted JB on chat and they said they do not stack, but the store has discretion. Spoke to someone in the stores and they said can get the $1000 trade in credit, and they can do $1100 towards the phone for the 24 month contract. So $2100 off the up-front price, but committed for the $99pm for 24 months. Not bad.

Ideally then if I can sell my phone it would cover the remainder for the most part.

        • The $99 PM is the issue I find with contracted plans, they are just so overpriced compared with PAYG options. I haven't paid more than $20/month in years, this would kill me paying 5 X this per month and I really don't need more than 10GB a month.
Eagerly keeping an eye out for options before pulling the trigger.

    • My local store wont let me use my existing Telstra number , where other stores can by pass it

  • JB has the $1800 off the Fold when you take out a 2 year contract with Telstra at $99pm. That's possibly the best we know about. Or the $1000 bonus trade-in with no contract - see Ozb Deals section for more details. Unfortunately they dont seem to stack.
    For additional savings:
If your work has options to salary sacrifice a portable computing device, you may be able to do this for the whole purchase figure of $2697 (given you paid the whole price, with some of that paid through a gift voucher), taking 16-37% off the cost depending on tax bracket ($430-997). If you use the device for work you can then potentially claim part of the cost of the plan. Regardless, selling off the Pixel 7 Pro privately will probably work out better than any trade-in offer.

I was looking at taking the non-contract, JB trade in bonus (after bonus, comes to $1697), and not trade in my phone in order to sell privately and squeeze a bit more value out of it.

Seemed like the least hassle because cancelling those contracts seem to make the full cost of the phone around $1650, which would be the equivalent to just doing the trade-in bonus. Unless I'm calculating things wrong!

    • Care to share the calculations?

      • JB Trade-in: $2697 - $1000 (bonus-trade in) = $1697 (I won't actually be trading in my old phone because it's a 7a and they'll give me peanuts for it)

        JB $99/24mo plan:
        $2697 - $1800 (bonus gift card) = [$897] upfront.
        $897 + $99 (first month of the plan) = $996
        $996 + (($800 [max voucher repayment])/24 [term of the contract in months]) x 23 [for the remaining months]) => +$766.66 = $1763 (rounded up).

I've gone the Google Store trade in route as I have an unused Pixel 6 Pro.

    So:
    $2699 Pixel 9 Pro Fold 256GB - $900 (Pixel 6 Pro) - $404 (studentbeans 15% off) = ~$1395
and bonus ~$230 google store credit (Google one premium member for 2 months, you have to subscribe, TRIAL won't work for this)

    • this should be the best way to do it, thanks for sharing. I ended up doing the same but traded the 7 Pro for $950. The 6 Pro for $900 is probably better value. Now the hunt for accessories..

    • What storage size is your P6P? I'm guessing they'd give a little bit less for the 128GB model.

      • Mine's P6P 128GB, they don't care or even ask storage size for trade ins, which sucks if you have paid extra storage in the first place.

        • Oh thanks! I was wondering why they don't make the distinction and thought maybe it's after you send it in or something.

I might see if I can scavenge a really good condition P6P and trade that in to get all those other discounts and store credit offers with Google.

  • I wonder if trading in my Fold5 at JB is a pretty good deal. Valued at $1900 including the 1k bonus, I mean it's about the same I can sell on fb marketplace.

  • You can get Ultimate gift cards from Woolies next week for another 10% off. Use in JB

    Just pre-order a Google pixel fold 512gb cost $2897
Get 1100 gift card by sign a $99 plan
Get $1000 coupon by trade in pixel 8 pro 256gb
Trade in Google pixel 8 pro 256 GB gets $480
    Final cost 2897-1100-1000-480=$317

    • ….further to above…if you choose to cancel the plan after a month, then $800 is the early termination from Telstra.

  • Thanks for all the advice guys.

Was looking to trade into a fold while waiting for the tsm chip pixel 10 lineup but upon further reading, decided to skip the upgrade altogether his year.

Appreciate the time and effort and hopefully this thread is useful for others out there.

    • TSMC Tensor G5 if true would be huge. Going from Exynos to TSMC SD was a big jump for Samsung especially for battery life which is one of Pixels main cons.

I was interested going Fold 5 to Pixel 9 Pro Fold but might hold off considering its still $900 after JB trade in. Gotta be less than $300 extra for me to downgrade soc and potentially battery life.

      • +1

Tensor G4 battery life has been solid so far. Where is the con here?

        • -2

The con is relatively to other phones the SoC runs hotter and less efficient, battery also runs out quicker due to that and it is more expensive also. Yet to try Pixel software but OneUI is generally great now with Good Lock and is quite feature packed.

If the price was a bit cheaper I wouldn't mind trying it out as battery life could be good enough already

    • +1

Pretty cringe that one bases an entire purchase solely on the chip like thats all that matters, despite the Tensor G4 already showing a good showing..

I swear forums are full of NPCs and parrots that repeat everything they hear and dont know why.

      • -1

Mate, every single tensor chip efficiency has been trash except this one. Can't blame people when there's been years of disappointment
