Anyone book Qantas over this must have rocks on their head.

    • What do you mean

    • +2

Well I booked Qantas but only because their deal was not during the same period as this so. Rock me up buddy

    • +1

I booked (a few months ago) Jetstar Syd to Osaka direct return for $482.91 including seat selection, 2 meals; but no checked luggage.

I must have boulders in my head, right?

      • +3

Well, I totally agree with you. And indeed that Qantas is operating close to Jetster level.

You get a rock of honour.

        • I had multiple bad experiences with Qantas stewards. Had one tell me to move my luggage from one overhead to another. Asked why they couldn't do it for me and they said WHS. Staff don't really seem to be in the service industry.

      • for some people that checked luggage is worth $200+. so it really depends on the traveller. Also Japan Airlines is like business class compared to jetstar so you're paying extra for the luxury

      • +1

Yes because you forgot to factor in the delays and cancellation :)

        • +1

"Yes because you forgot to factor in the delays and cancellation :)"

Exactly why Qantas is a lesser option. A mate flew in last week, QF manage to cancel and inbound flight from Singapore.

      • +2

i can understand going there without luggage, but coming from Japan without luggage.. is a big challenge…

        • Well actually I’m going there early December. So it will be a challenge.

  • When do the sale fare for September 25 come out?

  • +7

Great price for JL direct from MEL.

May is OKish but beware Golden Week crowds April 29 to May 5,

    See https://www.japan.travel/en/guide/may/

Always book direct with the airline. Costs a few more dollars but saves a world of pain from OTAs.

JAL will give you free seat selection and option of free domestic flights with tax. WIN WIN.

I went around this time this year. Only difficulty was securing Shinkansen tickets because I left it too late but otherwise it was fine. Great time to travel there

      • +2

        Just rock up, unreserved seats.

        • Nice tip!

        • +1

golden week a lot of Shinkansen will be reserved only

    • How do you get free dosmetic flights?

      • +1

        Search on the JAL site.

        e.g. MEL-FUK return

or use the multi city e.g.
        MEL-NRT
        HND-FUK
        OSA-NRT
        NRT-MEL

The total price will only be a few dollars more than a simple MEL-NRT return.

Sapporo is the most expensive domestic add on.

        • Same trick worked with Emirates into Aus unsure if it still does For example Manchester-Perth-Brisbane is the same price as Manchester-Brisbane due to Qantas/Emirates codeshare alot of Brits do it for State of Origin to go to 2 or more Origin games.

        • I'm having trouble with the multi-city - it doesn't show the price until the very end and even then, it doesn't have the flights on the dates I want - and doesn't indicate what dates have the flights on.

          I'm trying to do:
          MEL-FUK
          FUK-OSA
          OSA-NAR
          NAR-MEL

If only it wasn't to Narita

Jump on the NEX, easy peasy.

      • Take some photos too. Cool trains.

      • +1

        I prefer the Keisei Skyliner

        • I prefer the Ido period themed shops at Haneda departure (before the gates).

        • Depends where you want to end up, I've taken the skyliner to Nippori too.
Stayed in Nippori, no fuss or dealing with the normal subways

          • @TightAl: Yeah it does depend. I've even taken the normal local train as some of them through run on the the TOEI Asakusa line and if your staying at a place closer to this line it can work out much better as the fare is just over 1000 yen compared to over 2,000 for NEX and Skyliner.

  • What’s the going rate for December school holiday period? Trying to book a 2 week holiday and the prices are crazy from Adelaide!!

    • From Melbourne is like 2k-ish

    • any updates - still planning to go then?

      • Yeh still going. Found a return rewards flight.

        ADL>CNS>KIX
        HND>SYD>ADL
$3,060 plus 182k points for 2 Adults and 2 kids.

        • Would love to see your workings after you've booked.

Amusingly I'm in Adelaide wanting the same trip at the same time for the same length of time.

Which is either creepy or weird coincidence i guess.

    Wish they flew Airbus planes…

    Anyway, any deals for Feb?

    • Why airbus planes?
I mean, their boeing seat 787 that is used for this route, is set up in 2-4-2, which is airbus set up… the only airline with this set up.

  • Bring back the sub $3k business class would be nice.

  • Is JAL not flying from Melbourne in Sept 2024, anyone know why?
When I looked, there were flights in August and November… but no Sept? Or just booked out, so not visible?

    • +3

Pick a different day of the week. Only fly out Mon, Wed, and Sat.

  • Many earthquake warnings in JP recently…

    • +4

Not sure it’s possible to go to Japan during a safe earthquake time.

    • Worrying about earthquakes in Japan is like worrying about flooding in Australia or about some volcano erupting in Europe.

Sure, there may be a big one every decade or so, but worrying about it would be a mistake given how unlikely it is. I've lived in Japan for 6 months without even feeling a tremor. Hell, I've felt more earthquakes in Melbourne than in Japan, although have lived in Melbourne all my life.

  • -4

There is huge earthquake risk in Japan.

    • It's the same every year. Just dont go to Japan ever if you are worried about earthquakes

      • I am worried, I won't go… :-) hope you'll be safe there..

    • Bigger risk in Australia, spiders, snakes, alligators, karens… Wait, It is risks, not risk.

      • Well educated…

  • +1

No Sydney deals again for these dates! So painful

    • I believe ANA flys from Sydney, JAL from Melbourne?

      • Oh ok. I assumed both airlines had sydney flights

        • +2

Both do have Sydney flights but overall Sydney is much cheaper direct to Japan than Melbourne as ANA do not fly to Melbourne so there is less competition.

  • I just came back from Tokyo/Okinawa/S Korea for 2 weeks (quick last minute trip) and flew with ANA return.

Flying back with JAL in Nov/Dec so will be able to compare in the future. However, with ANA - service was good, food was meh and seats were definitely bigger than normal economy.

Happy to answer any Q's anyone may have on my experience with ANA or Tokyo.

One tip: Avoid August. Sh*twas so hot and humid. I've lived in HK in the past and i love hot and humid weather - but the weather in Tokyo was a different beast. I think it's partly because (at least for me) places like Tokyo, you want to walk everywhere and explore as much as you can, and well it's hard with such weather.

Most days my watch would give me a reading of like 32/35 degrees with 100% humidity, and a feels like of 37 and above lol.

  • Any possible deals for End of Oct - Nov time?

  • -1

what about from sydney? how much

  • Seems the good options are sold out :(
JAL website shows this for return flights:
"The requested cabin class is full or not available in at least one of the options listed below"

    • +1

Managed to make a booking eventually but the prices went up a little. As someone suggested above, booked two additional domestic legs as it's cheaper than getting a Shinkansen.

      • Man that's just wack economics, surely more expensive to run flights than an electric train?

  • Got stung by a foreign transaction fee. $100 wasted. Why no one mentioned it?!

Paid in AUD but was charged from Singapore. I thought paying through PayPal would safeguard from it but it didn't.

    • That sucks. Did you purchase direct via JAL website? I always wondered whether there would be a fee when booking on direct airline sites, so I always used a fx free card and forfeited points over the chance of getting stung.

      • Yeah, purchased directly through JAL website.
