  • Confused between these 2 models:

    https://homewatchsecurity.com.au/product/emerald-planet-10-y…
    https://homewatchsecurity.com.au/product/emerald-planet-240-…

Does anyone know if the item in this deal can be hardwired to 240V as well as has 10 year battery?

    • +3

Your first link is the same as the OP and battery only.

The second link is mains powered with a backup battery and needs a licensed Electrician to fit it.

If you had both in your house, they should interconnect.

      • Ok that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

      • I have an Emerald 240v alarm and a battery alarm both connected via remote. For some reason, using the 240V smoke alarm as the base unit didn't work. So far happy.

  • Why do they cost so much?

    • +1

Reliability, but remember you are not replacing. 9v battery every year, for 10 years, so in that context do they really cost so much? I recommend the wireless controller.

  • why do you need wireless in a smoke alarm?

    • +3

So that when one goes off they all go off . It used to be that they were interconnected by a separate wire , many models still are .

      • +2

It's also handy for turning off nuisance alarms (burnt toast etc.) if you need to place one somewhere hard to reach, e.g. ceiling of a stairwell, as turning off an easy to reach one turns them all off.

    • If you live in Queensland it’s becoming a requirement to be interconnected: https://www.fire.qld.gov.au/prepare/fire/smoke-alarms

    • +1

Houses are larger, and you should really have them in bedrooms. So if an alarm goes off downstairs you are notified immediately.

  • +1

Note that if you are just needing one unit then you may prefer the non-RF version which can be found for ~$20.

    • Link?

  • Any reason these are better than this pack?

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/firepro-interconnectable-10-year…

    • Probably a stupid question but….. After the battery expires after 10 years, do you need to replace all the units again?

      • +1

yes, or can buy the hardwired ones but $$ for electrician

        • Thanks.

          • @jollster101: Even the hardwired ones fail. One of ours went after 3 years - warranty covered it - and another went after 7 years. The replacement one failed after another 3 - 4 years.
I know the requirement in Queensland is that they be interconnected @Evil-Elmo but is it even a requirement that a house - lived in by the homeowner - have smoke alarms at all? Aside from "new" builds, obviously.

            • +2

@PatchyFog: It depends. If you bought the after 31/12/2021 then the seller was legally required to have fitted them before the sale went through. If you've lived there for longer than that, they're required from 1/1/2027.

More information can be found here - https://www.fire.qld.gov.au/prepare/fire/smoke-alarms

Not being snarky, but if anyone is genuinely unsure of the smoke alarm legislation in their state then just search for "<state> smoke alarm regulations". There have been quite a few changes in the last ten years. Sounds like a long time, but it's not.

        • +1

The hardwired ones need replacing after 10 years too.

      • +1

Yes, all smoke alarms (both battery and the 240v installed by an electrician kind) have a use by date and should be replaced at the end of their designated lifespan.

    • The ones in Bunnings don't (brand/reliability) seem very good according to reviews on the actual Bunnings website (look it up), (and sometimes only the crap ones/overly priced ones remain).
This product has only one bad review out of five.
      Example product with bad reviews:
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/quell-10-year-battery-photoelect…
Emerald planet is a good brand.
The ones I bought in bulk for rental purposes were from Red (and are good quality too):
      https://redsmokealarms.com.au/

      • Are you saying don’t buy from Bunnings because a different product Bunnings stock has bad reviews? I’m trying to understand why you linked reviews of a totally different smoke alarm?

I imagine everyone relies on the review of the actual product they’re looking to buy. That’s the point of reviews being item specific.

The reviews for the product I linked seem decent and the product is cheaper and seems to do the same thing so doesn’t seem overpriced.

I’m more asking if anyone has a functional reason why they would buy these over the Bunnings option

  • Spend a little more and get one with CO detection.

    • Any recommendations?

      • Got a Google Nest Protect wireless with 6+ years of sensor remaining. Have had it for a while now, and it has been outstanding.
The sensor has a 10 year shelf life, starting from mfg date. So depending on the batch, could be a few years less when you get one.
Only fault I see is google has seeminly abandoned nest, and so its not integrated with its google home ecosystem.
But as a smoke & CO detector, it is faultless. You could have a bunch of them and have them linked together with also alerts on mobile.
Paid ~130, but I see it as a 10y investment.

        • You can’t buy the battery operated Google Nest ones anymore. Agree they were terrific and I’m still using one but the other one has since failed.

Now either need to buy the wired in sparky Nest version or choose something different like this unit.

These are sensitive to humidity, and one of ours also went faulty when we weren't home over s long weekend (the neighbour had to climb in via a window and pull down all the alarms and disable them all to work out which one was the faulty one).
We have them in our house in Brisbane and they go off all sirens blazing in the middle of the night multiple times in humid summer nights. I wish I had paid more for a different brand, as having broken sleep from multiple false alarms is just not worth the savings.

    • Did you try vacuuming the vent holes? I researched this brand before purchasing, I found a video which points out an identical issue. He said you need to remove dust from the vent holes.

  • Question, Does the entire ring light up every time it does the 48 second status flash? The datasheet shows there is a LED by the HUSH text, can this be adequately covered up or does the entire ring need to be covered up?

    https://emeraldplanet.com.au/newdata/pdf/2022.08_Troubleshoo…

    • @McCloud

Yes, the entire circumference of the middle button flashes although it isn't equal brightness all the way around.

The flash is very quick and isn't very bright at all, only the most light sensitive of people in my opinion would be disturbed by it in a darkened room and only if they were laying directly under it as the light source is recessed.

The flash is visible around the circumference of the button in the middle, I guess you could cover it up but that may make it difficult to use any of the functions on the button.

  • I'm not clear, is RF module included/embedded or has to be bought separately?

    • +1

EMERALD PLANET 240 Volt Mains Powered Smoke Alarm with Lithium Battery Backup – Supplied with RF Module (WIRELESS INTERCONNECTIVITY READY) – EP-VC-240-10 (RF)

      https://homewatchsecurity.com.au/product/emerald-planet-240-…

RF module supplied with smoke alarm 🙂 - $68.20

      • Thanks. So to sum up, It's included with the mains powered version but not with the battery powered one.

        • Correct.

The battery powered detectors interconnect with other battery powered detectors out of the box no RF unit required.
