Accor Plus Forced Subscription Renewal

I was very unhappy to receive an automatically generated support email from Accor Plus

A Support ticket #XXXXXX has been opened on your behalf: Accor Plus Subscription Renewal
YOU HAVE SUBSCRIBED TO SUBSCRIPTION RENEW
Enjoy the convenience of your membership being automatically renewed every 12 months with Subscription Renew. If you do not want your membership automatically renewed, you can cancel this plan at any time by logging in to your account via the Accor Plus website.

At first, I thought it was a phishing scam, but it appears to be the official position of Accor Plus to FORCE all existing members to have auto renewals enabled.

Australian and New Zealand Accor Plus memberships are opted in to a subscription renewal.

With subscription renewal our members enjoy the convenience of being renewed automatically every 12 months at a discounted annual renewal rate. However you can opt out of your subscription at any time up to 48 hours before your membership renewal date.

If you have no interest in auto-renewing your accor plus account, please follow the instruction in above link.
Note, you have to login at accorplus.com, and not all.accor.com.

Also, while you can delete your subscription, you cannot delete your only payment method.
So best to use a credit card that you know would be closing soon, in case if they pull another shenanigan.

They giving you the option to Opt out of auto renewal. Not sure what the issue is.

I’m an Accor Plus member and I have opted out of auto renewal.

Yes, I have opted out, but the issue is that I have not previously agreed to opt in to auto-renewal.

As mentioned above, you can opt out of auto renewal so what are you complaining about? People will whinge about anything these days.

You can opt out, but it looks like they have auto opted people in who were previously not opted in. Changing preferences on your behalf and then telling you to change it back if you don't like it is pretty bad imho. Obviously they are banking on people not reading the email or whatever.

Thanks - it seems to say they will advise about the auto-renewal 30 days beforehand but its good to know you can cancel the plan now & it will remain active until the renewal date.

    Cool story

I do wish the ACCC would put a stop to annual auto-renewal by default subscriptions, it should require to be opted in manually by the subscriber if they wish. Happened to me with Jetstar, I contacted them within an hour of my credit card being charged and they made it clear under no circumstance will they be refunding it.

Thanks for posting the link. Have just cancelled the auto-renewal on mine.

I was going to do it next year and renew in December to retain what I hope will be Platinum status in 2026 (thanks to Accor Plus and a Qantas fast track promotion giving me 50 status nights), but have cancelled now instead so I don't forget.

  • Mate, you're in for a surprise when you check your Netflix/Disney+/Spotify etc. accounts.
