This is a beast of a laptop

  • Damn

This is comparable against which AMD or M processor? Are these quiet & stay cool?

    • +5

but don’t run all windows apps as native, some apps run in emulation.

      • +7

I would be careful and and check that your applications work properly before making a purchase decision. My colleague bought one of these and Google Drive wouldn't work, in addition some 3rd party USB drivers. They also couldn't get the VPN to connect. If you are using anything bespoke it would be best to double check it's supported because there is no guarantees with emulation, which can also be very slow.

I don't see why this is anything over $1600. We know that the chips themselves are not that expensive, there is no dGPU, this is class 7 machine and not a class 9 machine (Lenovo specific build quality marketing). This is basically trying to capitalise on the new hype.

This will definitely go down even more in the future and I expect it to be down another 25% by Black Friday. Up to you if you want to pay the early adopter tax.

Just a hype. There still issue with ARM on some games. Get a power bank if you need to last a bit longer with AMD or Intel. Over $2000 , might get a Macbook air.

    • +3

Even Rosetta 2 had issues, so it's not really specific to a Windows thing. Perfect emulation is hard, especially for something that has weird design/optimisation like games.

If you're gaming, you wouldn't be after this laptop.

Yeah, I'd wait a few years before getting an ARM Windows machine.

Not just games, but many anti-virus, printer drivers and virtual machine hosts can't run in the x86/AMD64 emulator.

Last time Microsoft released ARM for Windows on Windows 8, they abandoned it and their users a year later.

      • +1

Don't need any other AV, just use Defender. Most printers should just work without another driver? I don't own one of these, but I do use Windows 11 on ARM quite often and don't really have any issues.

Whilst acknowledging the mess that was WIndows RT, Microsoft has been continuously supporting WOA through Windows 10 and Windows 11. They haven't really had a choice given they've been selling the Surface Pro X WOA line since October 2019.

This is not to say there aren't ongoing issues with WOA, which there are (and I say this as the owner of a Lenovo WOA laptop), but I'm confident Microsoft aren't going to abandon WOA.

Having said that, I wouldn't buy a 1st gen WOA "relaunch" laptop at this price. I'd wait a year for the next gen of Snapdragons to come out, at which time these should have dropped a fair bit on the used market and native WOA support for apps and drivers should've improved as well.

Even then, gamers should probably look elsewhere.

        • I agree. ARM has great potential for lower power, and it might be the future.

However, these ARM machines are overpriced for what they are. For the price of this machine one can get an M3 MacBook with 10 cores, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. IMHO the MacBook is superior. For Windows one can get an AMD 8845HS series with more RAM, bigger SSD and a GPU in this price range. Wait a few months and AMD 370 machines will appear.

I just think this machine is overpriced for what it is, and its price will probably fall by 30% in the next 6 months.

wait a few weeks for the new AMD laptops

    • Strix halo would be nice ;)

  • Such a confusing time to buy a laptop AI or gaming or intel or amd or snapdragon?

    • +6

The new AMD AI 9 370 chips, just launched, currently have the a fastest CPU, integrated graphics and 50 TOPS+ AI NPU. They are faster than Intel Ultra or Snapdragon based on reviews. Asus laptops are starting to appear with these CPUs, but more brands are coming based on their press releases recently.

      • I was liking where AMD was going with powerful integrated graphics for gaming with 7800HS etc, hope that doesn't take a back seat with this new AI buzz.

      • I hope battery life will be near the Snapdragon chips though. I am in the market for a new laptop or possibly just a desktop, and battery life would be important if it was a laptop.

        • +1

Battery life on SnapDragon is only good if the laptop has large battery, 70wH+ and it you are doing light weight tasks such as web browsing. Soon as the laptop starts doing more intensive workload, it's significantly worse than the new AMD CPUs based on reviews of the Asus Zenbook S16. Reviews that actually tested the Snapdragon properly and have shown this.

  • these will be niche machines for a while, we were going to get some for work for users who are mainly MS apps, haven’t bought any as yet because some people apps run in emulation and service desk didn’t want the hassle, we have fleet of 2000 laptops , maybe in the future when more apps from 3rd parties have ported to ARM.

  • +5

While the laptop seems like a great machine the price is off-putting. I'll wait.

    • +2

idea is the snapdragon chip should be cheaper than an intel cpu so except for early adopters and corporates think for home use i will wait.

  • I feel like my Lenovo 9i w/ 1360p, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd for $1k was a better deal. :D

  • Anyone know if any of the new upcoming amd or intel laptops have a bright 600+ nit display? The brighter the better.

Just looking for good displays in laptops.

    • The new AMD based Asus Zenbook S16 is a 500+ nits OLED display.

      • That will be the expensive one dave2d reviewed?

  • +2

Keep in mind that AMD laptops get very similar battery life in light use (office apps, web browser) without the compatibility concerns and with a reasonable price.

There is no reason to consider snapdragon right now, not at these prices.
