When Joining Microsoft Family, Make Sure You Join as Adult. Minor Got Stuck Forever Unless Removed by The Organiser

I joined a Microsoft family to use an M365 license. Somehow, the owner of the license added me as a minor. This means only the organiser could remove me from the group. Now, the license has expired, and I cannot remove myself; I am stuck with the family forever. I can't get a response from the organiser, and Microsoft support confirms that only the owner can remove a minor from a family.

When joining a family license, make sure you are not a minor and do not give consent.

Call Microsoft. Explain that due to Domestic and Family violence you have no contact with the former family member and it is triggering you. Explain they must remove you from the group.

So lie? Guess that'll work better than saying I used a dodgy site to get a cheap licence!

They lied in the first place with a fake family account so why stop now?

      • Relax, It's only a little white (ribbon) lie.

But it was worth the savings :P

Can you get another 'adult' MS account to invite you in, to override the existing family? Once you're elsewhere you can then leave.

Alternatively, let MS know directly that your Date of Birth on your account is wrong (since it's obviously not right if you've been added as a minor) and then leave the family after you've proven you're of drinking age.

    • Assuming that OP is above the Redmond drinking age.

    • The DOB is correct. It's the organiser who invited me as a minor, which I didn't understand was an option and the consequence. The DOB clearly shows correct. The support rep said they can't do anything; I can't join another one till I leave my current, which I can't

  • OOI, what is standard practice when joining a fake family. Would you typically use a different email?

    • $20 a year was cheap. I did for 2 years, then the organiser disappeared :(
