[VIC, Photos, Solved] Red Light Camera Fine with no red light in photo

10 years of driving in Queensland with no issues
Drive one weekend into Melbourne CBD and first fine in 10 years

So in this glorious education state this red light camera alleges I passed the white line 2.8(!) seconds after the light had gone red.

I might run yellows but I don’t run reds. These are the fine images:

You can see the tram crossing at the same time as me and there is no visible red light due to the tram blocking it.

I appealed this and the officer in charge replied to say they have reviewed and they are confident the offence was commited.

What does the ozbargain collective think? Worth seeing a traffic lawyer to see if I have a case? Any armchair traffic lawyers care to comment on the pros and cons?

I can see a red in the second shot. Kinda blurry, opposite corner top right of image.

Cameras tend not to make mistakes. People do, especially in an unfamiliar area and dealing with trams.

I also dont run reds, but got a fine a while back. Was it fair? It sucks, but it was a fair fine.

Put it down to a brain fart.

    • I contend if I crossed on yellow it could still be red in the second shot

Although I remember someone telling me crossing yellow is still an offence if it was safe to stop

The camera photos should show exactly how long after the red it was triggered in each photo. If one photo is at 2.6s. When is the other?

Edit, can just make put the red in both photos in upper left corner.

I mean it does technically auto go off so you would've had to activate the strip.

But agreed it is a little dodgy there's no red light in the image, i mean wouldn't that be the only proof the Police could proceed with?

*Edit - there is a red light there but god it's obscured and barely visible. Also probably didn't help you were straddling both lanes at the time…

The traffic light is red at top left of photo. See here

The light is below the Latrobe St sign and is red. Google Maps Streetview

    • Jesus mate good spot. Looks like I’ve got no leg to stand on.

  • You should hand your license in until you do a driver safety course. You show a clear ignorance and lack of self responsibility to the safety of others on the road. I hope you do contest it, then you can also get done for thinking its ok to run yellows, and also failure to stay in your lane as shown in the pics.

  • The red is visible in the second image and the white van has commenced its hook turn which means the green is displayed to traffic heading east.
