[NSW] Half Price Pet Adoption Fees @ City of Sydney/Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter

750

Adoptions fees for dogs and cats will be discounted by 50% at Sutherland Shire Council Animal Shelter from 12 August until 24 August 2024.

Quoting City of Sydney: Find your purr-fect match at our animal shelter

From 12 August until 24 August, the cost of adoption will be cut in half at the Sutherland Shire Council Animal Shelter to help dogs and cats find their forever homes.

Since 2009, lost and abandoned pets found in our local area have been looked after at shelter, which is run in partnership with Sutherland Shire Council.

The facility provides high level care for animals and aims to rehome or rehabilitate each one.

It’s now at capacity. The number of City of Sydney cats and dogs in our shelter has almost doubled in the last 2 years, up from 44 dogs and 37 cats in 2021 to 98 dogs and 66 cats in 2024.

Heard a very touching comment about pets (in this case dogs) - "you love them for part of your life", they "love you for all of your life"

    • +17

they love you for all of their life. You'll most like out live them.

@CityOfSydney, is the ranger up for adoption as well?

    • +15

How did you type out this entire message and find it to be sane in any way? Especially to end it with loving your own pets? That's really strange behaviour.

      Least unhinged Staffy owner

      • You mean Amstaff owner, who purchased in Covid

  • +3

Are staffie owners more likely to be negligent?

  • +3

Just remember, it's yours for life.

Don't get the pet if you can't afford to maintain their health and food. It's high inflation, high living cost people say.

I genuinely gave it a consideration expecting something different but its all pitbulls ffs. Put them down before they kill someone. Had 2 of them narrowly miss killing my older dog by 2mm on the corotoid artery. (we were at a cricket match and they let them off leash in a kids park)

The penalty for such owner behaviour should be of their own choosing:

      1. Work at an animal shelter for 200hrs community service

      or

      1. Be dipped in meat offal and then put in a giant cage with their own pit bulls, hunger games style

I wonder what most of the would choose

None of these dogs are pit bulls, they are prohibited in Australia. I am a cat person, so I'm not up on dog breeds but I see bully dogs and cattle dogs, which are fantastic if properly trained.

@ShrewdBargin My niece was being held by her mother in a park when a Labrador bounded over to her and bit off a large chunk of her face, she needed three operations. I say again, it's not the breed you have to watch out for, it's the way it's trained (or not).

        • -2

Highly unlikely to be a pure bred lab. Lab x pitt mix perhaps. There are aggressive breeds and labs are not one of them.

          Ridiculous comparison.

@CauseNEffect: No, dear, I was saying that any dog which is not trained can bite. The link I left was to a short article from the RSPCA explaining that the bully breeds were not dangerous if socialised and trained. Here's something specific for you.

            https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-06-06/labradors-dangerous-d…

            • @saveye: I spend a significant amount if time in off leash dog parks everyday where i see dog behaviour and there owners behaviour. Labs are not the dogs causing trouble. Terriers and staffy mixes are the most aggressive by far, french Bulldogs are also cantankerous creatures that bite humans.

Labs are the most common breed and therefore you will see a higher representation in any numbers. Ive never seen a socialised lab bite a human, anywhere, ever. If someones idea of keeping a dog is tied up in a backyard with no socialising and a poor tradie goes into old labs spot then you could see a bite but thats not a labs normal nature they are the lovers of the dog world and just want be loved.

FWIW there are literally more dogs than children in this area which helps get a decent overview of breed behaviour.

    • I don't know much about pitbulls, but there are so many staffys at every animal shelter. Are staffys related to pitbulls? Why are there so many people abandoning staffys?

      • What breed makes pitbulls aggressive? Look at the history.

Free cat here if you're in SEQLD.

  • if adopting from shelter, do I still need to pay registration with council?

    • Sale price includes registration fee.

  • Half price on cats and dogs is not a good reason to buy a cat or dog.

Buy a cat or dog for a good reason.
