All time low (+/- the recent deal including the case) for this often-touted best-in-price class pair of speakers to strap to your head :-)

Apparently diminishing returns kicks in in earnest moving up from these….but of course, all preference.

Seems to reflect price drop on US Hifiman store etc.

I recently got these for $447 delivered from Ali-X, but via Amazon with warranty etc is a nice to have given reputation of QC probs with Hifiman.

Can be driven to reasonable listening level from my iphone 13 mini at a pinch, but you do get more out of them via a proper amp. I also EQ to preference (basically Oratory Harman)

They are big - which does aid in sounstage. But may need an aftermarket headstrap mod (like this - I'm keen, but yet to try) if a smaller head or for extended-wear comfort tweak.

Buy now and enjoy ya music…

  • wow nice price

  • Currently rocking the Sennheiser 560s. Any idea how much of an upgrade these would be?

    • I'm thinking the exact same thing. I've got the 560s and I use a btr15 to power mine. Don't want to have to upgrade the amplifier but would be interested to see if these were a real step up.

    • Haven't heard the 560s, but did start this journey with the 599 SE (quite different, from all reports, to the 560s though - less accurate, more fun)

Plenty of internet chat out there comparing the 560s with XS.

In short, seems like short answer is an easy yes - primarily a bigger soundstage and actual sub-bass. Even though 560s may have an advantage through mids, if you're open to EQ then you can grab that back pretty easy for the win.

I went 598 > 6XX > Edition XS. To me, it felt like much more of a leap than from the 598 to 6XX.

They're a decent upgrade or complimentary pair of headphones, IMO. There's more detail, better soundstage.

      • Out of curiosity, how have your XSs held up since you bought them (~2 years ago I assume)? Cheers

        • +1

No issues with mine. Materials have held up well. There's no visible signs of wear, AFAICT.

I've likely used them more than my other headphones since buying them.

I am reasonably careful with most of the stuff I buy.

Looks like the grill mod (3d printed) for the HE200SE

  • Thanks op. I am excited but not my wallet.

    • Tell your wallet the hit isnt as big as it couldve been…..

      • last you lifetime. Wireless version, AirPod etc get outdated when the Bluetooth version become too slow for future demand.

  • Worth the extra ~$150 over 6XXs?

    • +6

I've got the 6XX too (yes I quickly slipped down the slope…. but think I've now arrested)

To me - yes - unless your listening is skewed heavily to vocals-focussed music where the 6XXs of course shine.

Soundstage a big difference. As is the very bottom end.

      • Cheers for the detailed reply, appreciate it.

I've been reading reviews, fit and comfort are obviously potential pain points (pun intended) with these cans

You had any issues with them being too loose or the headband being too thick?

        • +1

I've got a small(er) head and so dont extend the band at all - thought the extra length sitting down on the back of my jaw would annoy me, but it's actually all good - ear sits central in the cup.

The band does get a bit sore after about an hour or two, leaving an imprint - but I just shift it slightly and away we go (I dont have hair as an extra cushion lol). Reckon I'll try the mod or similar I linked in the post.

awh jeez OP, kinda wanna cop over my 58x's I've been using for ~5 years now… don't know if I should or not
e: that response curve is actually perfect tho. Gonna upgrade. Thanks!

  • Hmm this, or spend over double and get the Arya Stealth?

    • +1

If you are not an audiophile and use high quality audio sources
Don't think you'll hear much of a difference (def not 2x difference)

      • Yeah I don't have lossless audio sources, I don't think I'll hear much of a difference either, I have a Clear MG that I'm pretty happy with, I know I shouldn't buy this one, but I want to haha

        • If you own a clear mg i dont think its worth it

    • A question only you can answer…. if got the coin, have you also got/willing to spend on the gear to drive them too? Will you notice and really appreciate the differences? I know I probably wouldnt. But that's me

      • +1

I've got alright gear, a Singxer SA-1 amp and a VMV D1se DAC, but I don't think I'm a big audiophile that can hear all the differences.

    Got mine 2 yrs ago

Sounds amazing (Paired with a DX3 pro +)

Right side extender is a bit loose now though 😟

  • The Hifiman Ananda are only $80 more ($529). Would it be worth stepping up to those? They seem to have the same headband as the sundara, which i find really comfortable.

    • Ah good find! That's the Stealth too.

    • Yeh I back and fwd-ed on that too before pulling trigger on XS - main factor pushing me to Ananda was the headband. But from my research the XS has a more appealing sound sig (to me - more bass, less neutral)

But guess you could always EQ the Ananda too …. should take to EQ just as well.

    • XS has better bottom end.

    • +2

I've tried both before and found the Anandas significantly more comfortable, compared to the XS's which are a massive weight on your head if you're using them for any longer than an hour or two, which to me was a deal-breaker, on top of also getting sore ears/listening fatigue with long enough use of either of these headphones in a day. The sound of the anandas had a little less initial "wow factor"/impressiveness (soundstage and bass, probably) to me than the XSs, but they still sounded incredible coming from 6XXs, and I felt had a cleaner sound overall (for say vocals and classical) than the XS.

  • Top notch headphones at a bargain price.

    • for shiz

    • -1

LOL, we've got copy cat negger following me around, how sad.

  • +2

Great price. To me they sound about 90% of the way towards my Arya Organic, which are honestly 98% of the way to my Susvara (ex Susvara actually) - I sold my Susvara because the Arya Organic was close to identical to the Susvara while requiring nowhere near the quality of amplification.

Honestly buy these without hesitation over anything else mid-fi.

    • Great perspective - thanks for sharing. Helps me with any niggling desire to blow more cash down the track for the AO's soundstage (apparently most of the way to the famous HD 800s stage)

      • +1

AO’s soundstage is truly holographic - tall as well as wide. The HD800s are wider, no height to the soundstage though. The HD800s are great for classical and for gaming but I didn’t enjoy listening to them - they were more used as a measuring tool vs other headphones when I had them.

I’m a bit of an AO fanboy though.

        • You had any issues with these EXSs having too little clamp force/being loose? Or the headband causing pain points? Cheers.

  • Anyone compared these to the He400se?

    • +1

Not in the same league (price and quality wise)

    • Much better soundstage and tuning wise, the treble alone on he400se is excruxiating for me.

  • +3

    Price is back to $449.

  • +1

Hey OP, just want to thank you for recommending the headband in the post. Had to end up getting it cause these things are big on my small head but the headband did the trick. So thanks again!!

    • +2

No worries, good to know as reckon I'll try it too! enjoy!

  • This or via Ali Express at $398 plus possible cashback?

    • this 100% returns are easy and free if it is faulty or DOA, also shipping is much quicker, aliexpress isn't worth the risk for pricy hifiman products IMO.
