PSA for Amaysim Phone Purchases: Startrack Employee Filming ID Details

Guys, just received a new phone today but was surprised to see the postman was holding two devices, one which you sign on and another which was his personal phone angled down towards the receiver.

I found it odd that the employee was carrying two devices so I asked him to show me his phone, upon which he refused, but as I persisted he turned it on and it was filming. I told him I would not take any further action if he deleted it, but it got me wondering how common is this and how do we prevent ID theft?

Should we be telling the postman to put away their other devices when we are showing them our ID? Should you reject the parcel and wait for it to be taken to the local post office? I did what I did because I am a big burly man who is somewhat intimidating so he was not going to fight me, but if you are a woman or someone with a thin build, the postman could become confrontational.

What would be an appropriate course of action to take to address the possibility of them becoming aggressive?

Have you guys experienced the same issue? Should I report it?

should have filmed him filming your ID

Whenever you have a package you must sign for but don't feel comfortable doing, try getting it sent to a parcel locker address instead. Most of the time it works and it counts as signature on delivery (since it is assumed you or someone you have given access to your account to are the only one/s who can open the locker using your details via the auspost app). Unfortunately it only works for auspost/startrack deliveries and not courier companies.

If that doesn't work, maybe get a physical mailbox/parcel box locker combo and provide delivery instructions to leave in that and have that count as safely delivered.

Of course report any concerns and seek clarity. There is no harm and can address a potential issue. Mind you no one's signature on those devices represents anything other than scribble.
Was he asking for some other physical ID at your house (unusual) or are you referring to your signing on those devices as the "ID" he was filming? Maybe he was trying to cover himself to show delivery was done.

I am back after my day off at the gym.

I am not the smartest person as you can tell. I felt like I screwed up when I let him go, but I am worried about the fact he might be from a South Asian gang, i.e. Mumbai mafia.

I really wanted to punch him in the head but after speaking to others at the gym, I realised I am not going to jail for nothing and he could have scrubbed the evidence whilst the police detained me.

If you can catch him, good but I am not sure what to do because every time I have interacted with police they have done nothing for me. Long story short there was physical damage to my property but the police did not pursue the matter even after apprehending that offender. I learned a long time ago the police are not there to protect the citizens.

It is always a civil matter when it is clearly a criminal matter and they will not prosecute. I was also scammed by a store owner, the police told me "That is a civil matter". Someone explain that to me because I am not very smart apparently. Fraud… That is a civil matter?

I can only hope this postman continues offending and one of his new victims decides to take action in these upcoming weeks.

Looking back at it, I was a coward.

I am not sure why you are so defensive.

I detailed that I caught you in the act and if you continue doing what you are doing we will catch you. This time hopefully it is someone who is aggressive and gives you a beatdown. I suggest to anyone who is brave to knock that person down to the ground, after you disabled them you should probably remove their sim card to prevent them remotely wiping the evidence, call police and then hand over the evidence.

This does not affect any employees that are doing the right thing. If you don't know where the location of your drop is, you can use your personal device to find it, but then you should be placing your personal device into your pocket or it should stay in your van because you don't need to wear a seatbelt for short distances and you should be parking nearby anyway which is usually in people's driveways.

If you wanted to film the giving of the parcel to the recipient, then that is alright too, but you were clearly filming the whole process including the handing over of the ID to be checked before some numbers were punched into the device which requires signing.

I did a lot of research and asked why an employee would be filming and there was no justification for it.

So I ask again, was that you?

      • Basically, what I am saying is that:

Alarm bells should be going off if someone is carrying more than one device. There is no need for that additional device. Maybe you noticed it, maybe you didn't. Have a think about your delivery, if you thought it was suspicious, report it because together we can probably get enough reports correlated and the system will automatically flag this employee. I was alert to what was going on, that's how I caught him.

I don't see anyone else replying that what I experienced was standard procedure, because it isn't…

Have you experienced a situation where the postman is carrying multiple devices; you never see it because you shouldn't be carrying another device, let alone using it to film. That's how I got him!

NO other postman is going to have problems. Only those who do the wrong thing will be punished. This post is not a dig at postmen… Lots of them do the right thing.

This is a dig at one postman that was doing the wrong thing and we need to let people know.

  • Postman Pat had a cat with him once at a delivery of mine. No second phone though.
