Two Months Free Subscription to Amber Hour App Including 6 Free Drink Per Month (1 Per Pub) @ Amber Hour

630
WELCOMEFRIEND

This app offers six free drinks per month so it's like 12 free drinks.
Pubs in SA, QLD, NSW, VIC, WA & TAS

Usually $12.99 per month which is actually pretty reasonable for what they offer.

A couple of catches:

  • It's aimed at craft breweries so the range of pubs is a bit limited.
  • You can only get one free drink per pub per day.
  • You need to provide payment details for subscription, so make sure you cancel before the free period.

They need to offer higher tiers

Also, this made me laugh from their faqs:

In addition, we target a spending-orientated audience, not deal-seekers. Our marketing and business model support this approach, including the limitation of not allowing Members to redeem credits within two hours of each other, encouraging them to stay at your venue for longer.

    • +1

But it’s already one drink per venue per day so I’m not gonna stay 2 hours to redeem another one anyway, unless I’m missing something?

      • +2

I think they meant different venues.

        • +5

Ah yeah I see so I can’t line up 3 venues close to each other and go smash 3 drinks then f off somewhere else. That’s fair I guess.

          • +3

@nuts: Shame, this seems a great service to do a "new pubs what I've not yet been to" pub crawl.

            • +2

@TheDukeOfNukem: Yeah, definitely agree, even if they were to not have the 2 hour thing for launch and put it in later. It probably won’t be used tbh.

      • +3

It's 1 drink per venue per month not per day unfortunately.

So the only way to redeem your 6 drinks a month is to travel to 6 different pubs, you can't just go back to your local once a week and redeem there.

  • +4

Nice idea, I’m happy to go and grab some local beers. The app feels like it was made by someone on fiverr tho

  • +11

Why can’t they list the venues instead of having a map that doesn’t work…

Ok if you download the app you get a list

  • +5

The annual plan at $100 isn’t a bad deal if you already frequented a local craft brewery anyway, it’s $9 odd a month so even if you went only once a month it’s probably still cheaper than 1 beer.
The question is, do you get treated like a grub for using it? If it’s a firm no, it’s a good deal. The free 2 months is worth finding out I guess

    • +1

I wonder if your choice is limited too. There's stuff all (no venues) in my city so I am a pass. It's a good concept though because my mates and I never go out anymore.

      • +5

I guess that’s why it’s better to test it for free but a lot of these type of thing you get the “we don’t know about it” or it’s a drama or get treated like you’re stealing their first born, which isn’t nice to experience. But if you have a cool local brewer it’s good value

        • +2

I remember the free Guinness pints a few years back and my local new nothing about it but just honoured it because they are chill and awesome.

Yeah it's always a pain when they go to get their manager and then you have that back and forth. Hopefully the brewers are aware for you mate.

    • +2

The question is, do you get treated like a grub for using it?

Been to about 10 different pubs, and most of the bartenders didn't know about the app but they didn't care and were totally chill

    • +3

treated like a grub?? but being a solid ozbargainer don't you love the thrill of the hunt?, the back and forth, the check with supervisor, the rising antagonism and then the resigned enmity and foul look when they eventually have to succumb to your superior bargaining powers!

      • With faceless large corporations but not my local brewer

  • I must be missing something - where does one enter the promo code?

    • On android have to go to the next page where you select the credit card then there is enter promo code at the bottom.

    • +1

On iPhone, download the app first, then go via the link in the OP. It will offer you two months free. No need for code

  • If two people use this and one of them doesn’t drink, doesn’t that mean the other person has 12 free drinks per month in total?

    • +1

Sure but you have to convince the other person to visit 6 different pubs a month with you while not drinking…

      • Isn't that a wife?

        • Or a husband! Remember the staff wear rainbow lanyards

  • Several in my area of TAS, which is good to see. It’s worth giving the service a try for a couple of months to see if it’s any good.

  • There are about 6 breweries that I’m surrounded by in Bris and none of them are showing up on this app. Seems like they have grabbed the stragglers. Happy to give it a crack though and try somewhere new, thanks OP

    • so not worthwhile In Bris? just looked & there's a reasonable list

      • +3

It depends where you are, really. Like if you're anywhere close Slipstream/Helios/Hiker is worth it alone. Northside there's not as many options, but Sunny coast representation is strong.

      • +1

It's missing the inner north east trilogy of Aether, Fick and All Inn which are all my most visited unfortunately. Other areas will have luck for sure though.

  • +5

I've been using this for ages. It launched as Craftapped, and initially it was 10 drinks per month (1 per venue each month) with no cool down. Then they relaunched under this new branding. I've gotten plenty of value out of it, and they are very generous with the free codes to try and get off the ground I assume.

The only thing to be aware of is that almost every time I've used it the bar tenders look at me blankly because no one has ever seen the app before, so be prepared for a few awkward conversations. For most venues its meant to be a schooner of their core range, but half the time because whoever is serving has no idea what's going on they'll give you a choice of anything they have on tap.

Decent range of breweries if you're in Sydney, Melbourne or Bris.

    • +10

Hey mate, thanks for sticking with us!

I'd just like to address the bit about the bartenders being unaware - please know we're working on tackling this. As I'm sure you can understand, it's tricky considering the high rates of staff turnover in hospitality, plus our lack of brand awareness as a new business, but we expect these situations to become less frequent as we continue to grow! Please be kind to the bar staff and if they are hesitant to honour the redemption because there isn't a manager around, it's very helpful if you get in touch with us via More > Feedback in the app and let us know which venue so we can send the manager a friendly reminder. We're also currently putting together packs of a few physical items that we'll be sending to all venues to help with staff education and awareness.

      Cheers,
      AB

      • Fantastic, thanks for the info.

It's never been a real issue, I'm always happy to show them the app closely and give them any info needed.

      • FYI This deal being posted here is the opposite of "we target a spending-orientated audience, not deal-seekers". You better get comfortable with that. Even me, who doesn't like beers nor goes outside unless have to, wants to try this now.

      • What a lovely gentleman/lady - I think it shows that quality of the establishment. I’m going to have to check this place out and bring the family as well. I’m assuming my kids can have membership cards as well?

  • OP, why is it "like" 12 free drinks?
I think you meant to say, it is up to 12 free drinks, because "like" doesn't grammatically belong.

    • +1

      It's like being casual man.

    • Dont go OTT … I mean his gramma is choice bro!

  • +2

So there's 2 breweries in Pemriff which I visit sometimes and 1 in Springwood where I play squash so figure it's worth a try.

As @Capitalshark pointed out above if I get treated like a grub for using it will be a one and done and no renewal but if it's a good way to try new craft beers I'll probably renew the annual sub at $90.

    • Haven’t been to Pemriff. What’s it like?

  • +5

I've been a member for over a year (Used to be called Untappd, which i think they were licensing from the US, and decided to go it alone.) It's a couple of friendly guys in Brisbane running it, so a small outfit. I'm not convinced it's viable long term, so i wouldn't pay for a year's sub, but it's a great deal if you can make it work, and is dependent on living near at least 6 partner breweries to maximise benefit.

    • It's 6 free schooners a month (used to be 10. Usually from the 'core range', so mostly boring pale ales.) But one beer per venue per month. There are other offers too, like 10% off tasting paddles after your free drink.

    • It's paid for by the brewery - the free drink is meant to motivate you to bring friends and buy food. So i feel bad popping in alone to the smaller breweries. It also means if they're not seeing a benefit they'll withdraw.

    • Some of the bigger ones with lots of staff have no idea what it is and you have to get the manager….though more often than not, they'll just give it you anyway when they see the app.

    • Staff training means some don't know to tap the redeem button, so you might end up with a lot more than 6 beers if you're not conscientious.

Viability aside, it's a great offer if you're in Melbourne! Sydney venues are limited and out of the way.

    • Thanks for the more detailed info. Only about 3 breweries "near" me and 2 of those aren't on my normal path. Just one. So probably only 1/month so realistically won't be worth it. Still, will get a couple free at the craft brewery near squash so worth it for a free trial.

    Hi all,

I'm AB, Co-Founder of Amber Hour. We were shocked to see our signups spike so quickly overnight, so did some investigating and found ourselves on OzBargain! Thanks so much for your interest.

For clarity, our model gives members 6 drinks per month, 1 per venue per month, with a 2 hour time delay between redemptions - restrictions we've put in place to protect our Crafter venues, but still provide members value for money.

We're still in our very early days, so more Crafters, features, etc. to come.

Happy to answer any questions. Enjoy!

    Cheers,
    AB

    • +3

Whilst I like the idea of a free beer I would think a 2 for 1 model might be better long term. I'll prob buy a second anyway but some won't and this at least gives the brewer some cash.

      • I'm sure they've done the legwork to analyse this but I imagine most people are getting more than one beer anyway, and a 2 for 1 model probably doesn't generate as many subscriptions as an initial freebie

      • +1

        Completely agree!

Previously a paid user of Amber Hour and was quite disappointed. Unsubscribed after the first month.

Visited 2 different breweries and both had heavy restrictions on what beer variety the voucher could be used towards. Also, staff at both venues seemed annoyed to have to give a customer free beer, was unpleasant all around.

Would much rather it be 2 for 1 without restrictions.

        • +1

That's what I'm afraid of. I mean the trial is free, but I only have one brewery that's really convenient and if I get the stink eye for a freebie I won't be back to that brewery and won't continue the sub.

          • @tonydav: Exactly what happened to me.

            • @darktiger: To be fair, I used this a few weeks ago at Rusty Penny in Pemriff. The staff knew all about it and were happy to give me any beer on tap. I did have a second and now going back with the family on Father's Day so the app certainly worked for them.

BTW, the 2 beers I tried at Rusty Penny were delish and the BBQ smelled great. Looking forward to Sunday. And just realised it's the 1st so should get another free beer. (In addition to the considerable amount of paid ones that will be drunk Sunday.)

      • Buy some merch. More margin for them there than the beer.

    • I like the idea, but there are only 3 breweries in my area, so it wouldn't really be feasible to use all 6 redemptions. It might be nice to have different tiers or something (3, 6, 9 per month)

  • Oh I like the look of this. Going to different breweries is my favourite thing to do.

They list Hudson and Bacchus which are my two locals, so why not. And I'm off to Sydney (to go to breweries) at the end of the month. Will give it a whirl

  • Code didnt work ? Anyone have this issue ?

    • not working for me on android.

      • +1

Hey there, can you let me know where it's not working for you? Are you tapping on the payment method then 'Redeem Code' as per the instructions?

Do you have a payment method set up in your Google Play account? If you don't have one entered then you won't be able to proceed.
Have you been subscribed to Amber Hour previously? If so, this code will not work for you.

        Cheers,
        AB

        • Finallygot around to trying again and it worked, so probably my error.

    • Code worked when I restarted the app.

  • got charged on my credit card immediately with no option to refund!!

    • Hi mate, did you tap on the payment method then 'Redeem Code' as per the instructions?
Please email me at [email protected].

      Cheers,
      AB

      • nope. didn't have that option. thought, it is going to ask me about promo code on the next page but the payment went through.. requested refund from google. is there an option to re-install the app and get to the subscription page again?

        • +1

You needed to tap on the payment method (aka your credit card), then a menu appears with the option to select 'Redeem Code'.

If you email me I can help you.

  • +1

I've just used this at a local brewery (Central Coast Brewery). The owners there knew about Amber Ale, they said someone had contacted them about getting on it a few months ago, but they had never done anything since. They said I was the first person to show up with the app. They didn't know what to do so they just took a photo of my phone and said they would get in contact with them.

Nice guys tho and great beer so I will go back, it's done the job

    • Hey! I'm so glad you could go to Central Coast Brewery, we haven't had much traffic that far north of Sydney yet so it's not surprising you're their first visitor with the app. I'll reach out and give them the info again, they may have missed an email ◡̈

      Cheers,
      AB

      • Sweet! I will tell my mates, maybe you'll get a bit more traffic here :) It's mostly clubs up here so it's nice to go to somewhere with proper beer sometimes

  • +1

If you cancel straight away does it still work for 2 months?

    • +2

      Would like to know also.

      UPDATE

Subscribed and cancelled straight away and it says the subscription is still valid till Oct 9th so I can confirm this works.

I will probably subscribe anyway IF I find myself using it to be fair but in MY opion a trial should be a free trial period without being forced into a payment.

      • Sweet, thanks and yeah same here. Will keep it if it works out well for me.

  • There are a few events listed in the app. How do you go about claiming a drink there?

    • +1

The events listed are currently for promotional purposes and will be deactivated before the event starts. We're building dedicated 'Events' profiles, which will differ from the Crafter profiles, but rolling with what we've got for now. Sorry for the confusion!

  • Looks like a great deal! Does anyone know when the promo code expires?

  • Is this still current?
I tap on the payment method and put in the WELCOMEFRIEND in the "redeem code" in google wallet, click "redeem", "60-day trial for Amber Hour" appears which is promising and I click "Continue" but then
"that code didn't work Try again.." comes up

    Fixed…error my end
