Okay, tried both. I did get the hood-less version of each. Hate hoods, prefer beanie / hat as required.

Macpac uber is very compact but also surprisinfly thin and “deflated” for a down jacket. Uniqlo is puffier and noticeably warmer.

Packed into their respective pouches, U is about 50% bigger than the M. Neither is “chonky” though, and the U can be made smaller by really squishing it, if it must fit somewhere. The M can’t be squished as far beyond it’s regular pouched size. Both pack into their respective bags with the same degree of ease - ie not “difficult” but you would only bother if you need the space saving for hiking etc.

Weight difference is negligible. About 20g or 7.5% difference.

Both appear to be of similar quality. Only noticeable difference is the parallel puffer stitching intervals are twice as frequent on the M. Honestly prefer the thicker “inflation” of the U, as this is what provides warmth.

M claims responsibly sourced and traceable down. U doesn’t have anything on the tags about ethics.

I’ll personally be keeping U and returning M because U is noticeably warmer for the same weight.

For those interested in these ultralight down jackets. PLenty of reviews of this uniqlo jacket out there already. These are pretty good and i think it comes down to what style/colour/fit you like best. However, for best warmth value, Decathlon is the go. Trek 100/MT100.

      • I lol’d hard at this. Looks like a 1970s Rhys Darby dressed as the Michelin man.

Yep, this guy has been on a diet of Bananas and Rice for a week.
He has gone into the Monday Morning meeting after having a quick long black or two and forgot to release the hounds.
