After 11 years and over 100 million devices sold, we're ending production of Chromecast, which will now only be available while supplies last. The time has now come to evolve the smart TV streaming device category — primed for the new area of AI, entertainment and smart homes. With this, there are no changes to our support policy for existing Chromecast devices, with continued software and security updates to the latest devices.

Today, we’re introducing Google TV Streamer, a more premium device built for the new era of entertainment and smart home needs. With Google TV Streamer, you can not only indulge your entertainment needs, but also have a hub for your whole smart home.

Google TV Streamer will be priced at US$99 / £99 / AU$159.

      What other features are new?

        Well, the Ethernet port is sort-of new (you could add Ethernet via USB previously). To me, the only real new feature (apart from presumably improved performance from the hardware spec bump) is the inclusion of a Thread border router, and a Google Home Panel, though it sounds like the latter will be coming to the outgoing CCwGTV models too 🤷‍♂️

        Don't forget "Ai", just what a streaming device needed.

        Soon "Ai" can generate targeted ads overlayed on any streaming service you are viewing that Google thinks you will enjoy and respond to.

    Anyone know how this compares to the Fire TV Stick Pro?
    From what I see online, apparently its using the same chip (Mediatek MT8696) which is where the AV1, h264/h265 etc comes from? Except it looks like the Fire TV Stick Pro has a WIFI 6E support compared to the Ethernet of the Google Streamer with WIFI 5.
    I'm kinda surprised they seem more similar then I expected?

    Google seems to be good at shooting themselves in the foot.

    Other than Google search, maybe Gmail, Workspace and Maps all the other things that has screwed up.

      Since the Google TV Streamer Page isn't live in Australia yet and only the US Price ($99) was mentioned in the Google Post, I had to Google the AU Price.

    I have had chromecast TV 4K for ages, but I picked up some fire cubes and a fire stick… I dunno I have been impressed, a few things recently with chromecast have been glitchy and slow, and even the quality seemed better on fire cubes.

    Hope they don’t do the same thing to all the chromecasts that they did to the Nexus Player… at the end of life for the Nexus Player, they just pushed out an update that bricked them.

    Personally glad they changed the form factor from a dongle to something that can sit on a unit and included ethernet port by default instead of USB or in the power adapter. In my house everything that doesn't move is connected via ethernet.

      No idea, not even available to pre-order in Australia yet…

      A specific Australian release date for the TV Streamer has yet to be detailed, but a Google spokesperson told us it will be coming in the spring. That could be any time between September and November.

    I had called my local JB yesterday to ask if it was coming out today and the guy had no idea…bit ridiculous…

    At Officeworks $157. Can use Flybuy dollars. I converted points to load $80 onto Flybuys card, so only have to pay $77.
    Instore only & have to swipe physical Flybuys card with pin.
