  • Trying to get my old brain around this…
Do we pay the 2yrs $81.36 in advance, = $81.36 cashback
Or monthly payments of $3.39, = $3.39 cashback?

Also, my son shared his Nord with me when he had it. Connected to Perth, "Sometimes" pages wouldn't load, even simple stuff like google search "at times", I'd have to disconnected Nord for the page to load.
Do others have this issue, or is it a setting?

    • +1

You buy it all at once.

    • +1

Not sure if it's gonna be actually 100%, considering the GST and currency conversion.

      • +8

Use Christmas Island for tax country so no GST paid

      • +1

No one is choosing Australia as their country when they get a VPN. Choose a country with no tax and you're on your way to sticking it to the man!

        • +1

Just learnt it today :) Thanks for the heads up!

    • +1

I find sometimes the connection drops out and reconnecting to a different location fixes it.

USA servers are fine for me though.

Is there anyone who has used multiple VPN’s such as Nord, Surfshark, ExpressVPN etc and has an opinion on which the best overall one would be?

I’ve been using surfshark for some time and it’s been pretty flawless but curious to know others thoughts.

    • +1

I've used surfahark in the past and found it to be stable. Havnt used nord in years…

    • +1

Nord has been good, I haven't had any complaints and the range of servers is good. Speed is nice too but I'm only on 100/20 so I can't comment on how it goes with higher rates

      • -1

I found out my isp throttles certain sites because it’s faster through Nord

I’ve never really tested it, but I regularly get 25MBps+ through Nord.

    • +3

I have used Nord, Surfshark and Proton VPN

I have felt Surfshark was the best experience out of them

    • I've used most and found Nord best for tv from the UK and US
I heard Surfshark is owned by Nord, never looked mind as Nord is so good for me and free with these cashbacks every couple of years.

    • Switched from PIA to Nord when PIA expired. I find Nord constantly comes up with Catchpa tests when using google, and a lot of sites that use Cloudflare do a human verification check too.

I liked PIAs software a lot better than Nord too. Have switched to Ubuntu now and Nord is command line based and runs flawlessly.

Speed wise they are the same.

    • Used Nord only. Haven't had issues. Was great in Bali, was able to get ABC kids for the little ones.

  • +1

I'm never confident that CR will track properly and reward will come thru.

    • +6

They have 30 day money back guarantee, just cancel it if CR doesn't track within a reasonable time frame (usually within minutes, but can be 1-7 days).

Once tracked (when you have received the CR email), set a calendar to mind yourself after 3 months.

      • hmm, been a few minutes. will give it 24 hours and try again. deal doesn't expire until tomorrow night.

    • +1

CR has always tracked my Nord purchases. Sb is the one to be worried about.

  • +6

Just a note with Nord (maybe other VPNs) the software you install installs a root SSL certificate, which allows Nord to intercept encrypted TLS traffic and still provide you a green https URL even though it's not end to end encryption between your computer and the website.

They do this to provide additional security to you however by doing this, they can actually see all your usernames and passwords when logging into websites e.g. banking websites.

So be careful. Most large private companies do this also, but they disable it for sensitive websites such as banking or health. It's called SSL interception - google it.

So make sure you don't install the security software just the VPN part and it's fine.

    • +6

This is why I don't even install the clieng software.

I use openVpn client and use the config. It takes away the fancy UI and ease of switching servers, but I would rather do more clicks then trusting them.

    • Excuse the ignorance, but my understanding is that's encrypting the traffic from your machine to the VPN server/host.
It does not change the certs use between (for example) your browser and your bank . If you changed the root CA, the chain is broken and the target server cannot decrypt your message.

So it should work something like this (assuming both are using MA-SSL)
      1) Browser hits banking website, receives client cert
      2) You type in details, browser encrypts payload using client cert
      3) VPN encrypts the already encrypted message using VPN client cert
      4) VPN server decrypts message using VPN server cert - which is still unreadable as it's encrypted by banking client cert
      5) Bank server decrypts message, uses message

In this case (which should be 99% of cases, as no auth should be done with HTTPs), it should still be encrypted.

      Am I misunderstanding something here?

      • That's exactly how I think it works. There still needs to be encryption from home PC to VPN server… hence the need for for the root SSL cert.

      • +1

When you are using a banking website there is no mutal authentication as there is no certificate on your PC that is passed to the server to authenticate the clients identity. When accessing a https website over the VPN, there is two levels of encryption. At the network layer (IPSEC VPN) and the application layer (TLS).

The network layer is only encrypted from your pc to the VPN server. The Application layer encryption should provide encryption from your pc to the webserver (end to end encryption)

Nord's standard VPN client does the above, which is fine because you still have end to end encryption at the application layer. Nord cannot see the payload (data) in the connection and therefore cant scan it for viruses/malware/etc.

If you install the security component of the Nord client, then for Nord to provide those security 'benefits', Nord has to be able to see all traffic, all traffic includes usernames and passwords. Its called SSL Interception, basically that are man in the middling your application connection.

The easiest way to see if you traffic is been man in the middled is to check the SSL certificate that your browser is using to provide the encrpytion. If the certificate authority is Nord, then they are intercepting your application traffic (aka all traffic including usernames and passwords). If the certificate authority is Digicert or Symantac or Global Sign or another reputable CA, then you are fine.

If you work in a large company, go to Google and see if they are intercepting your traffic by doing the same thing. You might see the certificate authority as "Your Company" instead of Global Sign

        • If you install the security component of the Nord client

You've mentioned this twice now, but what exactly do you mean by "security software/component"? I'm a bit lost on that one. Cheers

          • +2

@KangaDrew: Sorry for the late reply,

When I say dont install the security software / component, im referring to when you install the software there is a option to install Threat Protection Pro. Do not install this option.

        • +1

This really helps my understanding. Thanks a lot for this!

So now that I'm understanding the flow a little better… What possible security benefit does this provide?

(P.S. you're correct about Root CA at my place of work)

And thanks again for the explanation

EDIT: I use ExpressVPN at home. Can confirm my root CA is Entrust, so all is good there.

          • +2

            @Klogg86: No worries,

            VPN (IPSEC) in this case
            1. Hides your identity to the person you are downloading from
            2. Often increases the speed to download or upload files (e.g. when I upload to Norway I get about 1.5mbps, but over VPN I get about 40mbps)
            3. Stops anyone physically man in the middling your connection, e.g. cutting your fibre connection and putting in a hub. Not a major these days

For anyone else that is interested..

Here is a picture of a end to end encrpytion with office 365 (This is good)
            https://postimg.cc/06629fm9

When you install this option on Nord client, Nord then can decrypt your traffic and see everything thats in there. So please do it off
            https://postimg.cc/219SpJ1H

If you turn it on, you can see here that Nord is decrypting your trafffic with Office 365. (This is bad)
            https://postimg.cc/fVRRrZRt

This isnt dirty from Nord, they are trying to provide you security but in my opinion they are not trusted to be able to see my usernames and passwords.

            • +1

              @frazel: Understood.

              Thanks again, very helpful!

    • Add the fact that nord got hacked and failed to disclose it for months. Yikes

    • is PUREVPN the same?

      • There are two types of services

Basic VPN, typically provides better security

Security protection - usually to provide this they want to see everything you are transmitting

So if they provide advanced security protection or some along those lines, then they might be snooping into your traffic

I have used this offer two year ago do I need to creat new account on both Cashrewards and Nord vpn or only Nord vpn to be able to get Cashback?

    • wondering this also

    • +4

From previous deals, you just need a new NordVPN account.

I've done this deal twice, same CR account and cashback paid out both times, just a different email on the NordVPN account

      • ^this

You just need a new email that hasn't been used with Nord before. Like Kallo, I'm on to my second 2 year plan now.

        • Quick question - would doing the "+" in the gmail address count as a "new" email?

          Thanks!

          • @KiamSiap: I see no reason it wouldn't work. The + sign creates an alias email address so it should be ok but I can't say for certain.

  • +1

    Cashrewards to NordVPN link broken?

    • +2

Was just about to post the same thing. Can't get to the NordVPN site.

    • +1

      Are you both using Floptus?

      • +1

I am. Do they block it?

  • +1

FYI the only plan with FULL cashback is BASIC. I thought there wasn't any "Upsell" to NordPass or NordLocker however NordPass is sneakily called "Cross-platform password manager" on the plans so I'm pissed that I'm now not getting full cashback for something I do not need.

    • +1

Cancel it and sign up again for basic.

  • Thanks OP purchased 2 yr plan and cashback tracked.

  • Selected Christmas Island:

    NordVPN: 2-year subscription A$122.85/2 years

    VAT 0% - A$0.00

    Total: A$122.85/2 years

Will get $122.85 as cashback right?

    • +2

    • How can I select Christmas Island?
I just join it, it did not ask for country.
      Thank you.

      • Had the option at checkout

  • Signed up. Thanks !

  • Is it only for Basic plan or Plus and Complete is included as well. I am running out of Dashlane Turkey Subscription. It used to be cheap but they increased the pricing by 10 times so need a password manager too.

    • Basic only :)

    • Bitwarden :)

    "How to Prevent VPN Detection
Preventing VPN detection can be challenging as websites and services are constantly refining their detection methods. However, here are some strategies that can help:
    Choose the Right VPN
    * Obfuscation: Look for VPNs that offer obfuscation techniques, which disguise VPN traffic as regular internet traffic.
    * Protocol Selection: Some protocols are more resistant to detection than others. OpenVPN with obfuscation is often a good choice.
    * Server Network: A large server network with frequently changing IP addresses can help avoid detection.
    Additional Tips
    * Switch Servers: If you encounter issues, try connecting to a different server.
    * Disable DNS Leaks: Ensure your VPN prevents DNS leaks, which can reveal your real IP address.
    * Use a Static IP (If Necessary): A dedicated static IP might be less likely to be flagged, but it's usually a paid feature.
    * Consider a Double VPN: Some VPNs offer double VPN encryption, adding an extra layer of protection.
    * Stay Updated: Keep your VPN software and apps up-to-date with the latest security patches.
Important Note: While these methods can increase your chances of bypassing VPN detection, it's essential to remember that no method is foolproof. Websites and services are constantly evolving their detection techniques."

At this rate it's just better to use Wireguard's technique or Proton VPN's windows app which now includes stealth mode.

Unless a vpn provider could near guarantee minimal issues when paying for the static IP address feature.

    • NordVPN and Stealth Mode

Yes, NordVPN has a feature similar to ProtonVPN's Stealth mode. It's called Obfuscated Servers.

Just like ProtonVPN's Stealth mode, NordVPN's Obfuscated Servers disguise your VPN traffic to look like regular internet traffic. This makes it harder for firewalls, ISPs, or other entities to detect that you're using a VPN.

Key benefits of using Obfuscated Servers:

      • Bypass censorship: Access blocked content in countries with strict internet regulations.
      • Protect against VPN detection: Prevent your VPN connection from being blocked.

In essence, NordVPN's Obfuscated Servers offer a comparable level of protection and functionality to ProtonVPN's Stealth mode.

Would you like to know more about how to set up and use Obfuscated Servers on NordVPN?

I highly doubt this is even remotely equivalent. I'll have a play though.

  • Almost 24H and still not tracking the Cashreward… anyone else had to wait that long?
