Looking at an SUV for Reliability and Less Depreciation but Wanting New Lexus GX550 2024 vx Toyota Prado 2024

Hi all, long time reader, I'm thinking of buying an SUV and looking at reliability and durability.

The Lexus GX550 looks amazing! Only downside for me is I'm frugal, and V6 engine is going to suck up a lot of petrol.
Toyota Prado 2024 (New Design) is diesel and seems good, but not luxury or hybrid.
Lexus RX500h or Lexus RX350h are good hybrid SUV, but they are not off roaders.

I want to go offroading.

Any other recommendations appreciated. If you know about these vehicles, and can break down the pros and cons would be great!
Also, I've never bought a brand new car and always have had secondhand cars. What are some negotiation tactics I can utilise to get a better deal in this demanding climate.

    *Prado

New Prado has up to a 3yr wait, just fyi… no doubt the Lexus would be a lengthy wait as well

    • Just looked up the 2024 Prado and they completely changed the design.

Looks similar to first gen Prado.

    • Wow! 3 Year wait is crazy talk! Can't believe it! I called my local dealer and they put me on a waitlist without deposit though. They never said anything about 3 year waitlist.

As above, if you want off-roading, Prado and start planning your first trip for 2027

Or look at other brands where the difference in depreciation over time is likely less than the price rises you'll see before the Prado turns up :)

MUX? Serious 4wd with a pretty solid drivetrain

    Everest?

Do you really want to go off road, or just like the idea of it. Unless you are really serious about off road, there's quite a few higher riding SUVs that will be more than happy to tackle gravel roads and some mild obstacles. Thw prado and lexus are closer to a 4wd than SUV. SUV is a category that also includes RAV4 and CX5.

If you want to go serious off reading and haven't before, getting an older vehicle to practice on is a much better idea.

  • Toyota Kulger ? AWD Hybrid SUV (Not 4WD)
I was deciding between this and a Prado, but the Kluger's running cost are a lot cheaper. (between fuel & Service intervals 10K vs 15k.)

    • I searched it up too! But its hot high enough for offroading (Clearence)

      • How much ground clearance do you think you need? From what I can see it is only 17mm less than the Prado.

Being frugal and buying a $130,000 Lexus….. lol. Isuzu MU-X for half the price?

Happy to buy a $120k+ Lexus, but worried about the fuel cost confused Pikachu

truly shocks me how people are tightfisted with fuel money, but buy new cars that will happily accept much larger depreciation over the same horizon.
I mean you literally buy the car to use it, and fuel costs here are miniscule as % of income so don't know why this even plays into peoples thought process.

      • probably a big part of it is years of propaganda where fuel costs and fuel efficiency are highlighted by the media and regulators as of supreme importance, which was already a thing due to regulators but continued on due to comparison to hybrids and now ev's "killer feature".

years ago i recorded detailed costs for a boring sedan (not a luxury car) i drove daily over a 3 year period and realized fuel was less than 10% of TCO - that was doing about 15k's per year.

  • GWM Tank 500. With your budget, you can buy a spare one too.

But seriously if you want a 2024 Landcruiser you can get one right away if you're prepared to pay a lot more than MSRP. Many dealerships (and private individuals) bought them just to make a big profit by reselling them when they arrived, with no intention of using them themselves. Use a reputable car broker, such as MotorScout, and they will let all the dealers in their network know that you want one. I'm sure you'll get some offers for immediately delivery. Expect to pay about $25K more than the list price, I reckon.

  • INEOS Grenadier with Saddle Leather Driver’s Pack. To off-road you need a 4WD, not an SUV.

  • Lc300, you won't regret it.
GX550 is nice, but won't have the driving range of a diesel.

Alternatively, get the lexus LX500d if you want luxury, and electrics.
Both have a long history of reliability/resell value later on, but if your worried about fuel economy wrong cars to be look.

Our Lc300 sits on around 13L/100, Raptor V6 petrol 16L/10, Prado current gen in our family is around 10L/100.

Its cheap run around, but lacks any serious power especially when you add in towing/heavy loads.

  • If you really want to go off-roading then buy something 2nd hand. It stops the pain when you get the inevitable scratches and dents.

  • Fortuner is like a budget Prado. Availability less than 2 months for most options. Very capable with a few mods but the lower specs are a bit agricultural in feel and interior. I haven't seen the higher spec Crusade to comment.

Fortuner IS a hilux in a wagon suit.

      • Yes its based on the Hilux chassis but has coil springs vs leaf so it drives less truck like. Same engine as a Prado and I haven't seen many 7 seat Hiluxes;)

Its still a hilux in a wagon suit. Itll drive more truck like than a prado. More like a hilux with better suspension amd a bit of a load.

The 79 series (or whatever number it is) has the same engine as a Prado and hilux too. Doesnt make that anything like a hilux or a prado.
