Community First Bank

I am currently with Ubank with a high interest account. I am looking at opening another account at a different institution as Ubank no longer have Term Deposits. I noticed Community First bank are offering 5.25% on their 12 month Term Deposit. They have a branch in Blacktown Workers Club so this would be very convenient for me. I would appreciate anybody's experience with them or advice. Thanks so much.

    Never heard of them.

  • They are covered up to $250,000 per bank account as they’re an ADI. Other than that, how often do you contact your bank? I’ve never had to contact my bank so for me the importance is more so the reliability of online banking which these days is pretty consistent.

  • Its good the Government covers you. I was confused about fees and tried to ring them but it's a Bank holiday and I had forgotten. I don't intend on having a debit card but it seems that costs $2 a month. I wonder if you need to to have a debit card if you only want a term depisit?

  • I'd give them a go.

Something's happened over the last decade or so, former credit unions & mutual banks have dropped the "credit union" from their names & are now "banks". I suspect its because of regulatory changes.

I have a Great Southern Bank account (formerly Credit Union Australia), who have bought up a whole slew of smaller credit unions over the years. They have been ok, better than the large corporates I've had accounts with over the decades.

They are currently offering 5.15% 11 month term deposits.

  • Illawarra Credit Union are offering 5.3% for 6 months.

I have some accounts with them.

I was previously with another credit union, usurped by Community First (CFCU) plenty of years ago now. The previous credit union was one branch on the other side of town but I loved it - I had a proper relationship friendship with the manager, he pulled off a few things for me that really helped at times when no bank was interested - mutual respect built on trust both ways. Didn't have to go to the branch to deposit cheques - I'd just pop them in the post. One of the best things he did was put me off making a larger decision with some friends I brought in - we were ripe for offering a loan to but he gave us all a real good talking to and convinced us not to do it - in retrospect a most wise decision. Really was the sort of bank you see in westerns where the manager sits you down and gets you a drink. Was a great man, I even attended his funeral.

The merge into CFCU was brought on by various pressures small credit unions were facing then. That level of intimacy was removed immediately. Just last year they removed the facility to deposit cheques, even bank cheques. In most respects they are like the other banks now. They combined with the Northern Beaches CU a number of years ago so they do now have branches across more of Sydney.

But they aren't the big 4. It's one of the only reasons I still have accounts there.

Don't take your Community Banking advice from Kamala Harris.

her comments are relevant for the US, we are in Australia.

      • Her comments aren't even relevant to the US. Do you understand satire?

You apparently don't, the joke is meant to be that she said "community" a bajillion times, not that she's incorrect about community banks.

It's from an ad from Trump about how she rambles, which is pretty funny in itself. I love watching the moment you can see Trump stop reading the teleprompter and start talking about how pouring water on magnets breaks them.

          • @freefall101: Yes, it's a joke. Why are you going so far down the rabbit hole?

The point is that her advice is useless — a pointless word salad about community banks that gives you absolutely no information about community banks. Ergo — don't take your advice from her. I hate it when I have to explain a joke or the concept of humour to people that should get the point.

I couldn't care less if it is a Trump ad. It was nothing to do with Trump. It is something she said. It wasn't out of context. It was the shortest to-the-point video I could find with that excerpt, I have no idea if it is from a Trump ad. Seems you have exposed your political leanings and are being an anti-Trump Kamala-apologist instead of taking the original comment in the humour it was intended.

            • @endotherm: So which is it, did you grab a link that failed to capture the joke or I failed to get the joke? I'm confused. I clearly explained the joke, was I wrong there?

What was the humour of your post exactly? The humour is in how often she repeated a key word she was clearly being given to say, which your video cut out. Your post basically had her making a good point. And yet, I'm the Harris apologist?

Seriously, Trump is an old rambling idiot and Harris has the benefit of being a young rambling idiot, American politics doesn't get more complicated than that. Sorry if I insulted your messiah though while also insulting the Democrat candidate.

              • @freefall101: The video I showed portrayed what she said. Nothing more and nothing less. I can't help you if you can't see the joke.

If you think she was making a good point at any stage, then I'm afraid we are on very different planes of existence. What useful information did she impart from those gems of wisdom?

You are the one that brought up Trump. It has nothing to do with anything, I'm not sure why you are banging on about it. You seem butt-hurt because I insulted her ability, and went on her defense, somehow assuming I'm pro-Trump.

By the way Trump is 78 and Harris is 59. 59 is young to you? They are less than a generation apart.

Are you mad more Australians can name more US politicians than Australian politicians?

  • I noticed Community First bank are offering 5.25%

Considering you can get 5.5% for the first 100k with ubank for a HISA without being locked in to a year of rates, why would you?

    • Depends on whether or not you believe the RBA is going to cut interest rates in the next twelve months, and if so, how often and by how much.
