  • Serious questions; are there any down sides to those nsw govt programs where they come in to your house and swap your halogen down lights to LEDs?

    • +7

If they provide a quality brand LED downlight at no extra cost (other than the initial $33) then no downsides, it's a great deal.

But more often then not, they will charge extra for quality brand downlights, and if you're on halogens with non compatible transformers, they sometimes charge extra to "upgrade" to compatible transformers, and also beware, they may hardwire the downlight instead of putting in a plugbase which makes it harder to replace the light down the track when they reach the end of their life.

Anyway, those are the main ones, if you can find someone willing to provide a quality brand LED downlight, with plug base, at no extra cost, then please comment here so we can use them.

      • Thanks mate. Great feedback. Will ask each installer to provide that!

    • I contacted a few suppliers early in the year. When I told them we had ‘only’ approx 30 downlights to replace, they mostly lost interest. Something about too much paperwork for them, not worth their time

As someone who has bought plenty of these lights from Costco, $89 is the normal instore price. When they do go on special(normally every 3-4 months) they will be either $69 or $79.
They are great lights, but definitely spend the extra money and get a dimmer switch installed along side.

    • Is the dimmer switch has to buy or we just tell the electrician know?

      • +3

You might want to rewrite your question

      • +1

we tell dimmer switch electrician know

      • electrician know switch dim

    • Are these compatible with the Philips dimmer switch? I thought the Philips switch only worked with their Hue products. Unless you meant a generic dimmer which of course is compatible with any dimmable lights.

  • Is 800 lumen enough ?

    • IMO, they are suitable for bedrooms, but not for living rooms.

    • +1

Definitely when you have 4per room

      • Yeah 4 in a 4x4 is heaps imo

        • Yep, I recommend putting a dimmer in that way you can regulate it if it's too bright anyways

    • If you're swapping out 50W halogens be wary of the differences in beam angle

  • For reference these are commonly known as the Philips Smartbright downlights, and they come in bigger sizes and higher wattage, but a great product nonetheless.

  • Online or in warehouse only? It's saying $99 when I open the link and try to checkout.

  • 80cm???? That's nearly a metre wide.

    • 80cm lead to plug into an existing surface socket

      • Ahhh, that makes more sense, thanks!

  • -1

    Guess it is 80mm.
Showing $99.99 delivered for me too.
Do these plug into a plug base or wired to a transformer?

    • Plug based, transformer is in-built

      • Thanks

  • Has this deal reset or is there a code.. ? These are coming up as $100.

  • +1

I'd say that's in store and the $99.99 is with the delivery charge.

  • Does anyone know their IC rating. I want to replace my halogen downlights but will only install IC-4 as this allows the lights to be covered with insulation rather than cutting a hole in the insulation to dissipate heat.

    • Ic4

  • Do these gradually become brighter when turned ON or is it just bright immediately. Anyone know what the lights or function is called?

    • It occurs from certain types of switches. It’s generally called dimmer ramp speed or some such.

  • Reduction revolution has around 12 dollars as well.
