Auspost Parcel Lockers now only for Auspost or Startrack deliveries

Regarding the 24/7 parcel lockers mentioned here, I just got this by email:

From 1 January 2013, only parcels which are sent using Australia Post or its subsidiary, StarTrack will be delivered into our Parcel Lockers. Carriers who choose not to use Australia Post or StarTrack to send parcels into our Parcel Lockers have been advised to contact the sender or customer to organise an alternative delivery address.

So that was the logical next step to monetise their investment in parcel lockers, it was more than just reducing posties.

(Incidentally that Startrack is a subsidiary of Auspost explains why their last courier I had behaved just like a postie: pretended that he had knocked on the door and just left a card to collect at the PO. Hah!)

  • To the bush lawyers out there, how does this sit? Is it restriction of trade?

Could this pave the way for restriction of delivery to post office boxes from other couriers/vendors?

    • I think not. Letters are different from parcels. And letters are a dwindling business.

I have to grudgingly admire this move. Obviously some strategic thinking went into this. They realised that their physical locations were an asset that could be used this way. However other couriers could counter with for example, Amazon using 7/11 stores as collection points. Search and you'll find mention of this. What next, Fedex signing up Coolies, hmm?

  • They didn't even knock on my door. They just carded my postbox even though I was at home all day.

    • I hate it when they do that, especially given that we live 20k's out of town.

how does this sit? Is it restriction of trade?

Given that they own the lockers, I doubt it.
