Question about Towing Box Trailer with a Falcon Sedan

Hi guys, I want to know whether if a 2012 Falcon G6 ecoboost can "easily" tow a 6x4 or 7x4 box trailer without issues for weekend use only (mowing)? The towing capacity is 1,600kg but considering it's 12 years old, on 190km mark and had some issues in the past, I just want to be safe.

I shopped around and found a 6x4 galvanised trailer with 900mm cage for $1900. GVM is 750kg.

Is it better to get one with a short drawbar like in the picture above or a longer drawbar elsewhere like below for this car?

I have a transmission cooler and I will get the trailer brakes installed for an ease of mind if the Falcon is strong enough.

Thanks

A long drawbar is a bit more stable when towing and is easier to reverse park. Nicer than a short drawbar but definitely not a deal breaker.

Electric brake controller and adding brakes to a trailer is pretty expensive. Have you got quotes yet? I don't think you really need to add breaks brakes to a 6x4 with some garden tools in it.

The falcon will tow it with ease. The trans cooler is a nice bonus.

I dunno, I’ve been slow the past few weeks but that seems verbatim…

    • Thanks, I haven't got the quote yet. I want to minimize the stress on the car.

I have another question. Will it be an issue for the car if I add a light duty mowerpad on the draw bar? I'm contemplating whether to have that installed or get a small foldable ramp.

      Mowerpad.

      Foldable ramp, something like that.

The mower pad will increase the ball weight but unlikely a mower will tip it into unsafe territory. Probably best to get a long drawbar trailer if you wish to add this.

The mower pad will allow you to transport more garden waste so it's probably a good option.

Again, the falcon will tow a 6x4 trailer trailer with ease. I honestly think you're wasting money adding brakes (unless you plan on towing a trailer full of bricks). The trans cooler will minimise any stress in the transmission. If anything you may need to get new rear shocks if they are the factory original.

    • " easier to reverse park"
I'm the opposite, I prefer the quicker response of a short trailer. Depends on where the trailer needs to go. Our 14x5 is over 6m long with drawbar and won't do corners like a 6x4
      .

      • I'll rephrase that…

Easier to reverse park for the inexperienced reversing with a trailer type driver.

I've got a 6x4 short drawbar dirt bike trailer that is a breeze to reverse when loaded with bikes. When there's no bikes on it and you can't see shit or have any movement reference it's a nightmare.

Itll be a doddle for a falcon. Theres thousands out there towing much more than that. I've towed all sorts of stuff with a few different Falcons over the years.

Dont worry about trailer brakes. Unnecessary for 750kg.

    • Thanks, I feel much better now lol

towed double that with half the engine displacement with about the same weight, in suburban hilly sydney.
Falcons are solid (albeit mildly antiquated) units. She'll be right.

Can't talk about drawbars or much beyond not carrying above towball weight but invest in a new HD set of pads for the car itself.
Tranny Cooler will help, check gear ratios for your tranny and make sure to limit your gearbox to its 1:1 gear (no overdrive)

I tow a 7 x 5 trailer and golf cart with my ASX. Normally just locally but on occasion to golf courses in the country. No issues towing at 100km/h. You won't even feel a 6 x 4 trailer on a Falcon.

Years ago I had a EB Falcon S with the 4.0L inline 6. That thing was excellent at towing. All torque.

    • Theres a reason they use to use em as taxis, absolutely solid work horses!

      • Yeah my falcon was indestructible. After I got a newer car it sat on my lawn for over 2 years without being turned on. Someone asked about it and I said you can have it if you take the whole thing, he slammed a battery in it, a bit of petrol and it started without any hesitation. So crazy.
