Insurance for Private/Grey Import Cars

I’m considering purchasing a car which is a private/grey import (2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 Wagon); but trying to track down somewhere to do comprehensive insurance that won’t charge through the ass.

Shannon’s & Enthusiasts quotes come it way over what I’m willing to pay ($2.5k & $3.2k)… I bought an Evo9 (Aus delivered sedan) new when I was 22 and paid less for the insurance on it.

Tried NRMA and they said they couldn’t insure it… “Our team have checked your car if we can offer an insurance for this, they have mentioned that the vehicle average retail value is more than it was when sold and vehicle is of classic nature and reparability is too complex for general insurance.”

Which is funny coz the current owner said it’s insured with NRMA. 🤷🏼‍♂️

So… TLDR, looking for recommendations for reasonably priced comprehensive insurance for Private/Grey Imported cars…

Mitsubishi made 2,500 of these, not sold in any market outside Japan. Imagine you suffer "repairable" panel and/or mechanical damage and your repairer has to source every part secondhand ex-Japan? It would be a miracle anyone would cover it, let alone offer you a reasonably-priced premium.

None of those actually; definitely some nice specimens there though.

    • Mechanically it’s basically the same as the AU delivered Evo9.
Panels for front half of the car is also the same.

Rear tail lights are the same as the stock lancer wagon.

    • Hmm just out of curiosity does anyone here have heavily modified vehicles? And which company and how much are you paying ?

      For example a 800hp gtr 32 etc

    $2500 seems cheap to me.

I thought OzBargainers just drive Camrys without insurance.

    • Good luck with that !

    • Yeh at this rate I’ll just be spending $3k next service (needs timing belt & bunch of other small things sorted) for my stock 2005 lancer worth $2k. 🤷🏼‍♂️

        Just DIY.
        Timing belt kit - $400,
        Cam locking tool - $60.
        Free YouTube tutorial - priceless

        • Honestly for the time it’ll take me, and considering the other items that need to be done too; I’d prefer to just pay my mechanic to do it & have warranty.

If I was still in my 20’s, pre-kids & had free time to spare; would definitely be going this route.

          • @NoDowt: So you're worried about the cost and warranty of your Mitsibushi so you want to replace it with a 19yo grey imported Mitsibushi? Make it make sense?

            • @Ozbar Gain: Not worried about warranty of the Mitsubishi, that’s long gone… warranty of the service…

Replace a $2,000 sedan with 200,000 kms on it, minor mechanical issues starting to add up, hail damage & paint starting to go shitty; with a $26,000 wagon with 62,000kms, decent paint, no mechanic issues.

But not paying $2k+ for insurance when I’m 41… so probably not happening anyway 😂

Ok, and how much are replacements parts for that car now, as opposed to when it was new? Try getting an insurance quote for that same car today

    • I did via compare the market; Woolies everyday insurance was about $500 (seems too low… maybe they aren’t valuing the car properly… this is what I pay for my current stock 2005 lancer), budget direct was about $1000; others slightly higher. Still well below $2k

    • Cheers I’ll try them

For the price and cost, just get third party and self insured. That's what I did to my last import, and I came out ahead with the car.

    • Itd be nice if there was a TPP option that included the insurance company claiming from another party on your behalf. Not paying you out, just doing the work of collecting from them to reduce the amount of work you need to do to chase up another party's insurer.

      • That would be great… third party, fire & theft is close, but usually they cap at $10k coverage…

        • And normally only for uninsured at fault party.

  • Grey imports are harder to insure and insurance will cost more. For what you’re looking at I’d be surprised if Shannon’s was not the cheapest.
