Fast Charging Android Phone Recommendation

Going to need a new phone soon as it appears my Z Flip 3 is on its last legs. I've had two Z flips now and enjoyed the compact size when folded. Going to rule out doing a S24 Ultra size phone.

Needs:

  • Not huge
  • Charges fast (I could deal with the smaller batteries on the Z Flips, I just need them to charge faster, they were way too slow.)
  • Able to run Android Auto

Nice to have

  • Custom rom options
  • Good fast charging compatibility with powerbanks/aftermarket chargers

Can't Have

  • Huge size
  • Bad network coverage, currently use Telstra/Boost

Don't Care

  • I don't really use the camera so not worried about that

Had a look at the Poco's which look good bang for buck but the X6 Pro has a mediatek chip that probably won't be able to get a custom rom for and not sure if I would be happy sticking it out.

What is fast charging in this context?

Most of the S24 range will do a full charge, presumably with Super Fast Charging(generic name: PPS), in roughly an hour.

    • Yeh that or better would be what I'm after.

S24 is too slow only 25 watts. My current phone has 67 watts charger :P

I only want a phone with at least 65 watts and above.

      • Yet all of the S24 range charge in about 1 hour whether it's SFC or SFC 2.0.

Fast Charging is obviously subjective - hence asking OP what they mean.

        • My phone can recharge in 37 minutes from 0. Sometimes I really grateful to be able to recharge my phone much faster …

One hour is not fast charging in my opinion. There are times you'd wish you could recharge your phone much faster like 15 minutes or less. More phones with really fast charging are coming …

          • @neoleo: Interesting - I think my current phone does a full charge in about 1h5m.

On a few occasions on holiday, i've used a power bank with PPS for ~15m to get ~30% more charge into the phone.

Are you using a proprietary charger or standard USB-C PD/PPS?

            • @ihfree: Only proprietary chargers and certain powerbanks can recharge 50 watts and above, I think.

I use proprietary (standard) charger that came with the phone.

I have an old powerbank (very slow), but it's okay only use it occasionally for my phone as a backup outside.

              • @neoleo: Hmmm, that kind of sucks. Also a proprietary cable?

I have multiple chargers around the house that support my phone's "Super Fast Charging" at 25W and one that does SFC 2.0 but that's more for the multiport aspect. Charging at home is more than fast enough and often just done with a wireless charger. Travel is also pretty easy as you can take multiport chargers that support PPS.

My current chargers were from my previous phone and will more than likely support some form of faster charging for the next generations including if I decide to switch brand.

                • @ihfree: Usually I use the charger and cable included with the phone. I haven't tried slower cable with the charger which is not necessary. I had Realme 65 watts previously, so I have 2 proprietary chargers and 2 cables included from both phones (65 and 67 watts).

                  • @neoleo: Cool cool, another consideration for OP regarding chargers.

Personally, I think of chargers(and cables to a lesser degree) as longer term purchases.

The fact that my wife and I can fast charge our phones in the car, from a power bank, and around the house is really convenient. As it is not proprietary, we don't need to have the same brand of phones.

                • @ihfree: Wireless charger is just for convenience. Much slower and not really necessary if we have a wired charger. Also long time ago there were battery problems became thicker from wireless charging for certain phones …

I have a wireless charger that came with my smartwatch (water resistant anyway).

                  • @neoleo:

                    just for convenience

Yeah, exactly. A convenience well worth having. I use mine for over night charging - it's great not having to mess with cables.

Heat is not too big a concern. My old phone's battery health was still OK when I sold it.

                    • @ihfree: No problem with heat for superfast charging. Battery tech has become better and last longer (more cycles) with certain brands.

                      • @neoleo: Yeah - part of PPS is to move conversion away from the phone which means less heat generated in the phone.

  • i purchased a realme gt5 when overseas with 240w charging full charge in around 10 mins

    • Looks great but doesn't seem to be much development support from what I can see.

  • For fast charging, check Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, iQOO, OnePlus, Motorola, and Nubia. Not all of their phones have faster charging and depend on how fast and how many watts do you prefer.

For me, I prefer at least 65 watts. Now I have OnePlus Nord CE3 Lite which is 6.72" and 67 watts for charging (195 grams). I had Realme 7 Pro (6.4", 65 watts, 182 grams) previously but broken already.

How big do you prefer? Maybe 6.7" too big? Be more specific. Android auto should be available in most android phones with google services.

For camera, most android phones should be able to install and use Google Camera (gcam) mod for better photo quality.

    • Yeh i've been looking at Xiaomi 14 and the recently released OnePlus Ace 3 Pro would be awesome if they had a global version only downside being need to buy vooc chargers.

      • I thought all OnePlus phones come with a proprietary charger ? Same with Oppo. Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Realme are all sister companies under BBK parent company.

        • Yeh they do so i would need to buy a car charger for it and or a power bank that does their proprietary charging which im not sure exists.

          • @Noppy: How about very fast power banks that usually informed in Ozb? Like 60/65/100/145 watts …

          • @Noppy: If you do go that route, I'd probably be thinking about how needed fast charging is in the car/with a power bank. There's also questions like how much you value quality in a power bank. ie. will it force you to buy a cheaper less reputable power bank.

I have a 25W PPS charger in the car and on the one or two occasions where I have gone out unexpectedly with a low battery it has been pretty good.

  • I bought the x6 pro recently, it's a good phone for the price. You're right about custom ROMs, I've currently signed up to xiaomi.eu patreon as they release a rom for the MediaTek chips. I still haven't installed it though, don't know if I want to go down the road trying to get past safety checks again.

  • POCO X_ Pro phones are great in terms of speed of charge vs battery life, however I would not class them as small or compact. They are not huge either.

For example, a POCO X3 Pro charged for about 15-20 minutes will last all day. A full charge from <10% will take under an hour and is good enough for two days of non-gaming use.
