  • Are these brand new or refurb?

  • Brand new

  • Are these the noisy types? Looking for storage but would to avoid the old school data reading sounds!

I have 4x of these in a NAS. They're not quiet. If they're in another room it's fine. If you plan to sleep in the same room, it's pretty annoying.

I have constant read/writes though going to mine for uh specific duties so if JUST for straight storage they might be fine if not frequently written to/read from.

      • Very noisy. I've had WD Reds as well as HGST, and they are both much quieter.

WD Red Plus 8TB can be had for around this price or cheaper if on special. They run quieter and cooler for an unnoticeable performance penalty.

          • @buffalo bill: I've found the WD Red to be less reliable than Ironwolf but YMMV..

            • @crc32: When you look at Backblaze the highest failure rates come from Seagate.

              • @buffalo bill: I've got different stats to Backblaze. As I said YMMV.

    • Old school nas drives were probably 10k rpm SCSI.

Can confirm these are significantly quieter than those.

  • i could do with another 8tb of storage :D

    $33.60/TB excluding surcharge.

Get a WD Red Plus for this price any day of the week.

shame that this has gone up in price…bought one for $220 a couple of years ago for the new build, but was looking to get something similar, capacity-wise, but was expecting it to be cheaper…

    • +4

everything's gone up, I bought 4 of these for my NAS @ 220 a year ago on prime day. My NAS build would have cost an additional $450 a year later.. it's mental.

  • i want 2 16GB, anyone got any recommendation ?

    • +5

USB drives can easily handle your tiny 16GB requirement.

    • I also need 16T. I keep looking at this https://www.ebay.com.au/str/eastdigital. Waiting for encouragement,,,,

Two USB sticks would be the go. Hehe.

These ones from East Digital seem to be popular on OzB. Personally I bought two 16TB SAS drives from their eBay store in November for my NAS, and I'm happy with them so far. I don't think they are all that loud but I guess that can be subjective.

Edit: I should mention their customer service was decent, they proactively sent a message before mailing my order to double-check if I wanted SAS or if I meant to buy SATA, and offered to refund the order in case I made a mistake.

My boys have their own room. They can make as much noise as they like :D

        • +1

I spent way too much money on my NAS to lock her away in the closet :'(

    • sorry all, i meant 16TB! thanks all!

  • This or twice the storage for about the same price from East Digital….

The need for space has me conflicted and discombobulated.

  • 12TB for $126 keep coming up on Ebay, must be OK.

    • I saw that. Got excited… but I need 16T ;-)

    • Link please!

        • but refurbished, is it ok???

          • @CDG: Well if they honour their 5 year warranty and you have a backup for a backup it looks alright

          • +3

@CDG: Probably not, they add $42 delivery.
5 year warranty, but what is that worth from a foreign Ebay seller?

            • @The Magic Pudding: My first time hearing about them as well. Seems to be ebay store for https://www.goharddrive.com/

Seems to have reasonable reputation on reddit, going back about ~10-years. Some vouches as comparable to serverpartdeals.

but idk tho (in case i ruin your life)

              • @xrailgun: Did more research, found this red flag:

Does the warranty apply to international sales?

goharddrive : Yes. Since we only sell and ship within USA. International Customer who purchase from us and ship to a USA address and re-export the package out of country are required to return the item to us for Refund/Replacement. The buyer is responsible for returning the item and paying for return shipping.

  • Or have 12TB with 2 year warranty for $280.

Before anyone asks, yes they are new. I have 2x10TB, 2x12TB and 2x14TB, all from the seller from the link above and didn't have any problems for years now.

I've also checked serial numbers on Seagate website and although they don't show as "local" Australian product, Seagate support confirmed they are covered by 2 year warranty.
