Recommendations for Photo Gallery & File Manager App, G84 ?

I bought this G84 at BigW to replace a 4G/16:9/3 days battery life phone that's amazing…but no 4G 700mhz :(

Anyway, can I get some suggestions for a file manager and a photo gallery (non Google)? I understand Moto keep their Android clean, but given no native way to view photos or files is kind of crazy to me? I'll be adding a mSD, so needs to be able to handle that.

Kind of hesitant due to so many Play apps turning out to be malware-ridden!

Thanks everyone!

:)

PS: I don't understand the gripe on the photo quality at all? Low-light is never good, but regular photos I take even show the dust on the desk- lol. Maybe I have low standards?

Comments

  • a) yes low standards - from a dslr shooter here.
    b) i use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cxinventor…
photo gallery? i use qumagie, as it sees the photos on my nas.
my local phone storage is nothing more than a temporary place until they go to the nas.

    • Yes similar but synology here. My app will backup photos to nas but i always too lazy to sort them in regular basis :(

How do you do it? Copy to a temporary folder on qnap and then sort once a week?

      • All devices eventually put pics into the Photos In\Processing folder
        i have 3 python scripts
        1) put into day folders
        2) delete raw files without matching jpeg
        3) copy files out to the next stage

        Next stage is two places:
        a) the mass storage folder
        b) a folder to be processed by qfiling (for resize and upload to 6month rolling window backup / share-easy on onedrive)

also HBS backup backsup the processing folder wholly to onedrive too, just in case.

i have a laptop that i turn on once a week to retranscode all videos either in processing or on the mass storage, to have a "-preview.mkv" file made along it.
qumagie only displays .mkv video files. This is to pre-transcode to something tiny and useful, the 4K dslr videos i have.

i usually sort out the processing folder on a sunday, or during the week if i have time. there's no rush.

        • hmm yeah but my syno app on my mobile also scan new photos from whatsapp (sometimes theres is important photos there - maybe i shouldnt) and dump them to nas so i have few unnecessary photos (no need to keep). and when im connected to wifi basically the transfer between mobile and nas happen immediately - even if i wanted to delete the photo it is too late.
therefore the photos on processing folder get build up quickly.

i have no skills to do python :(

          • @CyberMurning: i set qnap photos app to only scan dcim folder.
if i need something from WhatsApp ill copy it over to dcim

          • @CyberMurning: plus, WhatsApp photos are trash. they come in at what seems like VGA resolution

            • @FoxJump: ah good idea ok i will adjust my app backup mode/folder.
also your thing about putting in folder with name as date is cool i mean sometimes i can just rename the folder to "2024.02.06-Sydney Trip with kids" for example and move it (because all photos on that folder are from that particular trip)

is it hard to learn python i think my synology has phyton app

              • @CyberMurning: yes
                my photos are in

                2024 \ Kids regular day \ 2024-07-xx - played lego at home
                2024 \ 2024-xx-yy - went to the zoo

i group photos per year, per significant event
or per year, per broad category, per day - for those less significant events.

i run the python script on the computer, or the VM in the nas - which is a computer too.

                • @FoxJump: yes same 2024 \ Kids regular day \ 2024-07-xx - played lego at home
but that is the end result (after sorting etc)
im talking from mobile to NAS, instead of dumping all photos to one temporary folder on NAS, the NAS/Phyton whatever automatically grouped those photos into new individual folders according to dates.
then we go manually to sort them, delete which ones are not good, and then rename the folder and move them to the final destination somewhere in NAS

                  • @CyberMurning: oh i see what you mean.
in qnap, you can use QFiling to do that.
you can upload to one place, and let qfiling have a task that will then move them to another place grouped by date.

                    i think.

                    • @FoxJump: Ah syno app doesnt have that feature i think. Possible to create magic phyton to go look at the temporary folder after midnight and do the sorting? (ie create multiple new folders and move the photos according to their data when taken)

                      • @CyberMurning: sure.
a scheduled task on window or cron on linux, executing your python code in a VM or a physical computer, possibly in the nas if you have ssh access.

                        • @FoxJump: wow that is farr away above my knowledge unfortunately. im not even sure if i can do ssh haha oh yes i have NAS, a synology, it is a competitor of QNAP, and i am the owner with full admin access. someone mentioned there maybe an app under docker that can do same as Qfiling

            • @FoxJump: Now anyone can set Whatsapp photo in HD in Whatsapp setting. I always send HD photo in Whatsapp (change the setting).

              • +1

                @neoleo: i know.
But zero chance in me getting everyone i know to change that setting to HD.

                • @FoxJump: Use AI or certain websites to UPSCALE the low res photos into HD photos ;-)

Even low res video can be upscaled to HD Video.

              • @neoleo: that is setting to SEND. to receive its depending on the sender setting. i think most my friend send rubbish photos anyway haha

                • @CyberMurning: yes ofc.
im talking about telling all my family and friends to toggle that one setting on whatsapp is a bore -so that they send me good quality images

  • I've used solid explorer for years. I've also seen Material Files recommended which is free and open source.

As for photos, I generally use Google photos. I've also got Simple Photos Pro from an old deal. I've also seen Aves recommended.

  • Cx File Explorer and Simple Gallery Pro for photo gallery. Many useful settings.

To improve photo quality, better use Google Camera/gcam mod that must be installed manually outside Google Play Store. Usually I get the latest apk update from here:
    https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/

Latest download links from BSG gcam mod (choose one):
    https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev…

You need to allow app installation outside Play Store. If you download apk file from Chrome mobile browser, I think the phone will ask you to allow installation sources from Chrome (enable this).

You can read my previous comment about setting up the gcam below:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15461014/redir

    • i like gcam i used it before long time ago before they restrict the installation to google mobile.
so it will work with samsung too? i like the the sphere feature taking photo in round shape

      • Most android phones should be able to install and use gcam. But, certain processors maybe not. Snapdragon processor should be fine. But Samsung Exynos maybe should get specific gcam apk to that Samsung processor (try last download link for Samsung). Long time ago I tried to install gcam in a Samsung Exynos phone, but it's buggy, not sure about the latest gcam. Huawei Kirin processor maybe not, I don't have it anyway.

        • ah mine is zfold5 with snappdrag should be fine will try later
