Planning to Rent out Our House Should I Leave The TV Wall Mount or Remove It and Patch up The Holes?

Hi All,

We have a tv mounted to a wall in the living room with a wall mount the cables (2 hdmi and power cables run through the caivty between the double brick behind the tv to the bottom hole were the cable can be plugged in and the hdmis can be plugged in).

Should I leave the wall mount? or remove it and the cables and patch it up? or I dont even mind just leaving the tv mounted to the wall its a sony x900h 55" probably only sells for like 300-400 used now.

Remove it. last thing you want is the renter to try and attach a 75" tv, rip a hole in the wall and start a blame game.

Thats a good point, but i heard tenants have the right to mount tvs anyway? correct me if im wrong im not sure on that one

      • Yeah they do (in Vic at least) - but they will be responsible for removing their mount and patching it up when they leave.

      • They do, but they have to make do afterwards. If they damage your wall during the install, it will be their problem to fix.

    • That's a good call - I was about to say "some renters will mount their own TV", but you 100% need to make sure the wall mount is rated to carry super large TVs as well.

  • If you leave the TV, then that's fine until it breaks and renter asks for a replacement. A $300-400 item can become more quite quickly.

Also, renter may wish to use their bigger screen TV so then they become responsible for ensuring the existing TV isn't broken etc, which might more of a headache.

I'm in a similar situation to you for my place - I do intend on just leaving the bracket and informing that it can only accept TV up to X size.

    • yeah i thought about that, in my case you can only fit up to 65" otherwise then it would overlap the windows which would look terrible!
I do worry about leaving the mount and them messing it up though, i dont mind replacing it every 4 years or something, as it looks really good mounted!
It was being rented before we bought it and the previous tenant said she would immediately mount a tv on that same wall if she could.

      • If you prefer to patch & paint the wall mount your tenants can purchase a floor stand for $100 which fits 65-inch max.

I would leave it, I mean the house I am in - the former dude asked me if I wanted the mount or if he could patch it up. The fact that the mount was there and the cabling was inside the wall, it was a no brainer and saved me the hassle in doing this. For rental purpose, just advise the max. tv size is 65inch and be done with it.

  • You could do what our LL did and remove it but leave gaping holes in the wall.

Perhaps leave it but have something written in the lease to say tv mounted on it by tenant needs to be under a certain size/weight.
